Revealing the 'Lost in Translation' whisper

Lit_lMost days I love the Intarwub for it delivers all brands of strange goodness to my desktop. But then other days, I find stuff like this, a clip in which someone digitally enhanced the final scene of Lost in Translation so that they could make out precisely what Bill Murray whispers into Scarlett Johansson’s ear.

I’m all for unearthing cinematic arcana and discovering insidery wonders, but I’ve gotta say, I think this is one secret best left unlearned. Because the way Sofia Coppola’s film ends is magical, and the not knowing the content of that parting whisper is crucial to that magic. (I also don’t want to know what’s inside the Pulp Fiction briefcase or what James T. Kirk saw just before he died that made him say "Oh, my.")

If you want to hear, follow me… but this way lies one whopper of a spoiler.

So, here it is. Watch at your own risk. I’m not saying that what you’ll hear will change the content of the film for better or worse, but sometimes, you’re better off staying ignorant. (And, there’s always some question as to if that audio excavation is accurate… probably wouldn’t hold up in court.)

If you wanna talk about it, feel free. But out of respect for the others who’d rather not know what was said, put a big honking SPOILER at the head of your comment.

I couldn’t hear the whisper in the theater because by that point I was too busy trying to strangle myself. This movie bored me literally to death.

      how old are you? 12?

  • tia

I don’t believe it. I don’t think it is clear enough to hear even digitally mastered. I think you can assign whatever meaning you want to it, and I think these guys did.

This movie sucked so bad, I never even made it to the end. That’s saying a lot because movies with boobs usually get a pass in my book.

  • adam

Yeah, I tried watching this movie 3 times. I stopped watching about the fifty min. mark each time. I found it to be very boring.

I am sooo glad to hear there were others who found this movie horrendously boring! I always feel stupid when people say what a wonderful movie it is…it is so nice to know I am not alone!

    • stourleyk

Of course you are not alone! Stupid people are numerous. (This ought to be obvious to anyone with half a brain but now we’re back where we started, aren’t we?)

  • RayT

This WAS a wonderful movie! The fact that you’re comforted to be in the company of someone who says “movies with boobs get a pass in my book” is funny. It should WORRY you that you’re in that demographic! Anyway, is anyone really sure that’s what Bill was saying? It still sounded extremely muffled to me.

I’m not sure knowing what he says makes it any different. Maybe it adds poignancy to her facial expressions, but I still think it leaves things up in the air…

Ok, i have no idea what was said, because i certainly couldn’t understand any of that garble.
But seriously WHY DO PEOPLE LIKE THIS MOVIE?? It’s so boring!

  • Red

    Yeah. That’s still pretty unclear.
I love LIT, but I think you have to and old man or a young woman and extremely lonely to really like it…

I love this movie… and I have to admit that I don’t really know why. When i was describing it to people after I saw it, they couldn’t understand why I loved it so much. But I have watched it several times since that first time in the theatre, and I still love it. Maybe it’s just one of those movies that has to hit you a certain way. Anyway, I couldn’t make out any of the garble and I like it better not knowing what he whispered.

People who find this movie “boring” should stick to popcorn crap like Transformers and leave the more intelligent character pieces to us discerning viewers.

  • Lily

I’m not an old man or a young woman and I’m certainly not lonely, and I love this movie. Also, I don’t want to say that I think it has anything to do with being more intelligent than other people, I think that certain stories just touch some people. I mean, my son loved this movie AND he loves Transformers; go figure!

    • 12342

who is your son? robert downey jr?

  • jen

haha! i find this movie very boring, but i still love it! not sure what that says about me?!

    • John

That made no sense at all.

  • Jenny

I understand why some people think it’s boring, but I loved the idea of these two lonely people finding each other. The ending scene is still wonderful to me even now knowing what he says to her.

People think this movie is so great only because it won awards and was directed by a Coppola. I like intellectual movies but I hate movies that try too hard to be hip and cool, kinda how I feel this movie is. I liked parts of it but I do not think it was the best movie ever made and will probably never rent it or watch it on TV if it comes on. One time was enough for me. Scarlett kinda bores me as an actress, it’s like she is never playing a character, just playing herself. She is very pretty to look at but her acting is just Blah. It would have been cooler if Bill said he sharted his pants.
