Addiction is a chronic, often relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and use despite harmful consequences to the individual that is addicted and to those around them.
Drug addiction is a brain disease because the abuse of drugs leads to changes in the structure and function of the brain. Although it is true that for most people the initial decision to take drugs is voluntary, over time the changes in the brain caused by repeated drug abuse can affect a persons self control and ability to make sound decisions, and at the same time send intense impulses to take drugs.

Interventions are either direct, typically involving a confrontational meeting with the alcohol or other drugdependent person or indirect, involving work with a co-dependent family to encourage them to be more effective in helping the addicted individual.

this show hit home for me. my family and i went through the intervention process. my mom was a meth addict with 4 1/2 years clean now. this is as real as it gets. from the helplessness of the family to the addicts behavior. it’s very heartbreaking but so so so true and happening i’m more homes and families than one would think.

Being an addict/alcoholic, I know the power of addiction. I’m highly intellegent, havea family of 6, high morals, but my addiction is stronger than even my love of my children. I struggle, I fight and I never give up. You don’t have to understand me, just have compassion for me. donna

I absolutely love this show. I have watched from the beginning. The work that these counselors do and whom ever is paying for this recovery is remarkable. They will be blessed for doing this kind of work. God bless their souls for taking the time and the effort to help these lost addicted souls. What a Godsend the people who help are.
