Melinda Doolittle turns to food-service industry to pay the bills

Okay, so as we discussed yesterday, Melinda Doolittle has not (yet) scored a major-label record deal following her third-place run on last season’s American Idol, but all is not lost. My pal Dawnie Walton, back from a recent trip to Atlanta, informs me that the former backup singer has parlayed her Idol fame into a different kind of gig: Singing the praises of Zaxby’s chicken restaurants:

Yeah, Melinda fans, I died a little bit inside the first time I saw it, too, but that initial wave of rage against 19 Entertainment has been replaced by something else. Is it an early-morning craving for fried chicken and Texas toast? Ugh, I need help.

Someone get this woman a record contract!

She sang recently at an ice skating show in Cleveland (Scott Hamilton & Friends I think) my sister and mom were at along with Phil Stacey. They were both way more impressed with Phil they said.

Is anybody watching “Idol Rewind” in syndication? If yes – are you really annoyed that after they get through Hollywood week, they start over again at the first auditions? They did it on the season 1 rewind, too. WTF?
Also, how much do you think they paid Dunkleman to narrate season 1, and “Clay D. Lang” himself to narrate season 2?

I hear that, since Taylor Hicks always looked and sounded constipated when he sang, he will be singing the praises of Pepto-Bismol soon. D’oh!

Actually those commercials do pay the bills and it gives her exposure. Some celebs are paid $1Mil to do commercials. Jennifer Hudson got $3Mil as a Avon spokewoman. Don’t you see Pene Cruz, Eva Mendez, ScarJo, and other hawking products? That’s a lot of money folks. It’s called “entertainment” and just because you sing and/or dance doesn’t mean you have to stay trapped in that category.

is there some petition we can sign or something to help mindy doo?

The saddest part isn’t the horrendousness that is talking about a perfect bite of fried chicken. It’s that she had to say “This is Melinda Doolittle” at the end. Like people don’t know. Because they forgot. Sad.

Nick, I disagree — don’t feel sorry for her. Rejoice that she’s getting exposure, because this could lead to more endorsements! You guys think having a record contract is a BIG thing, well — ask half the singers out there that don’t have hit records on the charts, or have failed records. It’s not a big deal folks. And she’s doing a credible job in that commercial. I would buy the chicken!

First of all, this commercial was done while she was touring with idol. It was done on September 17th. I know this because when on saw Melinda at the Hampton, VA show on the 18th she told me she was really tired. She told me that on their day off (which was the 17th) she had flown to Texas to shoot a chicken commercial. She then took the redeye flight for the concert and hadn’t had much sleep.
Secondly, I think she did an awesome job! Melinda is a fantastic person and talent and she will get signed!

Never loved mindydoo. There are plenty of people who can sing. She just doesn’t have the charisma or sing the kind of music to breakout. Just because she was on a reality show does not entitle her to a career of stardom. I’m sure she got more for pushing chicken then most of us get in a year. Boo Hoo.

    it is really good chicken

  • Hi

So I’ve been sitting here waiting for her album, even though there is no album? WTF?
