Snap Judgment: Imani Coppola's 'Raindrops From the Sun'

Categories: Grey's Anatomy, Music

Imani_lI’ve managed to sneak the name Imani Coppola into PopWatch once or twice before, but if you’ve ever heard her brilliant (and underappreciated) 1997 disc Chupacabra, then you know why she’s one of my musical obsessions.

Now, much to my delight, Coppola’s back with a new disc, The Black and White Album, and despite no longer having major-label support, her track "Raindrops From the Sun (Hey Hey Hey)" landed on the opening scene of a recent Grey’s Anatomy episode. And why not? "Raindrops" is an exceedingly catchy little ditty, one that builds and builds and builds till you want to stand up at your desk and join in that final chorus of "Wel-come an-gels! Wel-come an-gels!"Okay, maybe that’s just me. But you’ve got to admit, Coppola’s got a lovely way with a lyric. I’d argue the opening lines of "Raindrops" — "Yesterday was kind of like the Fourth of July/ The way your face lit up the entire sky/ I had to look away because it hurt my eyes" — is more poetic than all the songs in this week’s  Billboard Top 10 combined. And that final convergence of layered vocals, sweeping strings, and hip-hop beats sticks to my brain like a Post-It to a filing cabinet. Gorgeous!

So who else out here in PopWatchLand agrees that "Raindrops from the Sun" deserves to be a huge hit, even if it’s unlikely that a single corporate-radio drone in America will ever listen to it, let alone consider letting it pinch hit for the hourly Rihanna number he or she has scheduled for the next 472 days? (Whew!) Come on now! Show some love (or other feeling) for “Raindrops” in the comments section below!

I agree, it is a great song that deserves to be a hit. Of course, it won’t because it isn’t produced by Timbaland or featured in an iPod commercial. Then again, it is reasons such as those that I opt out of listening to the radio altogether.

Great song! I’ll have to check out the rest of her music. Thanks, Slezak!

Didn’t Imani Coppolla do that Legends of a Cowgirl song? I love that song. Still have it on CD single.

Yet again, Mr. Slezak, our tastes match. I still listen to Chupacubra to this day. I thought I’m the only one! Love the song, will probably *buy* the album.

Excellent shout out for Imani! That post just made my lunch hour. I hope the track at least gets picked for the next Grey’s soundtrack CD.

Imani Coppola is one of the best singer/songwriters out there. She’s sexy without being a tramp and is so talented that both male and female musicians should take notes. Afrodite is one of the best albums of the past year. If you dig IC, you should check out Dionne Farris, Alice Smith, and Jungli.

Imani is a absolutely genius. The Black and White album is definitely one of the best albums of the year. And “Keys To Your A**” is a truly magical parody of the modern state of popular hip-hop.

    Definitely a hot track…why can’t it be a hit?

I caught Imani Coppola performing as part of Mike Patton’s Peeping Tom when they opened for Gnarls Barkley last summer. Sorry to say that Imani was THE ONLY enjoyable part about the Peeping Tom catastrophe though, simply a jumbled mish-mash MESS! I didn’t realize this was her singing this tune from the recent Grey’s Anatomy though, thanx Slezak I do like this track!

I agree with Gringo. Girlfriend needs an agent! If “1234″ can become a hit (I like Feist but that song is not a favorite) then there’s no reason for Imani not to have a space at the table.
