Snap Judgment: Snoop Dogg's "Sensual Seduction" video

This morning, a co-worker spied the words "Snoop Dogg’s ‘Sensual Seduction’ video" written on a dry-erase board and wondered aloud whether that was the title of some sort of very, very NSFW cinematic offering. In case any of you out there are having the same thought right about now, let me assure you that Snoop Dogg’s "Sensual Seduction" video is not porn. No, it’s something much better: A music video for big Snoop’s new single, which finds him trading in his usual rapping for four minutes of quiet-storm crooning through a T-Pain-esque vocoder. I honestly couldn’t stand the song the first time I heard it (in an uncensored version bearing the even skeevier-sounding title "Sexual Eruption"), but its silky-smooth melody has since become permanently lodged in my brain. So what kind of bizarre visual feast could Snoop come up with to match "Sensual Seduction"? Check out the video below, and click through to the jump for my insta-take.

Wow. Snoop’s longstanding fondness for ’70s/’80s kitsch reaches newlevels in this low-rent, high-genius monster. He’s climbing a stageystaircase in a white-leopard-print tux, surrounded by billows of smoke! He’s playing a keytar with the kind of effects rigthat looks like a scuba snorkel! He’s flying through outer space on adivan/bed UFO! He’s playing with a full band in frontof a funhouse mirror like the one in the second half of Prince’s "When Doves Cry" video!Honestly, words might not be able to do this thing justice — if youhaven’tyet, do yourself a favor and click "play." It’s hands-down, the funniest, weirdest, most hypnotic clip of 2007 — and somehow, it’s a whole lotmore watchable than most self-consciously campy retro videos. I have noidea whether Snoop is making fun of himself or if this is actually hisidea of romantic mood music. But if this is what the apocalypsesounds/looks like, count me in! Who’s with me?

YES! This video seriously needs to be featured in the Best of 2007 edition. Man…the Prince When Doves Cry section is worth the prestige by itself.

Definitely a modern classic! lol Snoop is back on his game.

When I first heard the track earlier this month, I wondered if T-Pain was on yet ANOTHER hip-hop single. Then after purchasing the song on iTunes last week, I noticed it mentioned nothing of T-Pain being on the song, so I got to thinking what if Snoop did it all on himself, like maybe T-Pian inspired him with the vocoder, but was charging him too much to appear on the track? So he saved himself some money and did the vocoder thing on his own, and then…this VIDEO appeared on mtv.com on Monday & I was like OMG, this entire song, video and all is low budget HEAVEN! Words can not truly describe just how 70’s psychedellatasic (y’all like that word??) this ALL is, but I think this is going to be such a hip-hop hit as it is a mainstream top 40 hit. its easily Snooop’s MOST accessible pop hit since his duet with JT a few years ago on “Signs”. I too didn’t feel it at first, but now its on repeat over & over again…

going to be NOT such a hip-hop hit as it is a mainstream Top 40 hit.

The video is so corny, but it does a good job capturing the campiness of the 70s.

I watched it last night only once and my overall response was WTF, mainly b/c I’m more partial to Snoop’s ‘Doggystyle’ days. Maybe I need to listen to it once more to get more out of it (which seems to be the case for most people). It’s possible I may like it the more I hear it, but if the rest of the new album sounds like this, I might have a bit of a problem with it.

Snoop has been pretty lame the past few years, so it’s cool to see him doing something fun like this. All rap and hip hop videos look alike nowadays, so it’s a relief to see a video that’s more interesting to watch.

of course Snoop knows how ridiculous this song is. i love it. he was playing with this direction on the ridiculously over-the-top misogyny of “Can U Control Yo Hoe” and “I’m Threw Witchu” on R&G, but then he had to go back to lame by-the-numbers gangsta rap on Blue Carpet cuz of his ever-enlightened “hardcore” fanbase.
if the album is even half as funny as this it has the potential to be his best album. no joke
