To Care or Not To Care: A new Jesus and Mary Chain album

Jesus_lFollowing up on their surprisingly non-violent stage reunion at this year’s Coachella fest, the Jesus and Mary Chain are preparing their first album of new material in a decade; Billboard reports that constantly squabbling brothers Jim (pictured) and William Reid have written scads of new songs and will whittle them down to a dozen for a CD due in the first half of 2008. I wish I were more excited, but Whitney’s lukewarm review of their Coachella performance (even a Scarlett Johansson guest-vocal proved anticlimactic) and the sheer passage of time — the band’s heyday was really 10-20 years ago, wasn’t it? — make me worry that this’ll be just another lackluster, zombie-fied nostalgia act milking the last few drops of goodwill from aging hipsters with disposable incomes. Am I being overly pessimistic, PopWatchers? Are you eager to hear the Reids crank up the fuzzbox again, or have you moved on?

Here is the thing, 80’s alt-goth groups like TJ&MC are being given the “John Hughes” treatment. Their songs are being played in current movies and commercials(Ie: “This is the day” by former Bauhaus bandmates, “The the(prononuced: “the thee”)”). Many teens download MP3’s but they probably hear these old alt-goth songs from these movies and commercials. The exposure from the media means more money for The Jesus and Mary Chain once they tour. And they are probably learning from The Cure, The Police, and Morrissey why touring is essential to their bank accounts.

Stephanie T. — Not to be a stickler for detail, but neither Matt Johnson nor any other past or current member of The The has ever been a member of Bauhaus.

Crap! I meant The Smiths and ABC! Johnny Marr and Dave Palmer were part of The The. I’m sorry.
Still I am curious about the new Jesus and Mary Chain. I keep playing 21 hits on my Ipod.

No prob…and I agree 1000% about the new JAMC material. If the one song they played on Letterman a while ago was any indication, it doesn’t look like they’ve missed a beat. It’ll probably never be the same as the early ’90s walls of noise, be that a good or bad thing. I actually liked the walls of noise myself.
