Bad TV drama makes me want to gouge out my eyes. You know, metaphorically. But last night on Grey’s Anatomy, I was treated to an extended closeup of a calm young man with a bloody No. 2 pencil protruding from his eye socket. Maybe he wasn’t calm, I couldn’t really tell. I was too busy screaming unintelligibly and trying to look away. Even now, the thought of it makes me want to gag, and also maybe break the points off all my pencils.
Thanks to Shonda Rhimes and Team Grey’s, I’ll be forever traumatized by the vision of Doctor Shepherd extracting a five inch long apparatus covered in brain matter from his patient’s skull. (Those of you with strong stomachs can check out the photographic evidence, after the jump.)
I’m curious, though, does this sort of carnage enhance your overall viewing experience, or do blood and guts make your eyes burn? And what was harder to watch: the pencil extraction or Izzie and George together in bed? Also, could Danny’s pointed predicament possibly be a metaphor for the writers strike? Nah, Grey’s metaphors are never that clever.

as someone with a HUGE fear of eyeballs (the pupil is a hole people… a hole!i have nightmares of things piercing through my pupil…)
i was thoroughly disgusted by the Grey’s scene last night.
So much so that my roommate had to tell me when i could and could not look at the screen…
still not as awkward or annoying as george and izzy as a couple, though…
Yikes. Even House never got that graphic before, even when it had something similar last season (i.e. a needle injected through the eye). It’s not the worst that’s on network television, but still pretty cringeworthy, nonetheless.
Are they trying to drive us away? I spent half the episode with my eyes closed. I kept shouting, “Is it over?” before I could look. I’m glad I didn’t watch it by myself. Oh, and thanks for bringing up the George Izzy thing. That’s a trainwreck I can’t bring myself to slow down for.
In the same hour of TV last night, we also had Sam Winchester of “Supernatural” over at the CW cutting–a guy’s–head off–with–WIRE.
Not even kidding. He wrapped the wire around the guy’s neck and just…pulled really hard, I guess. I thought I was going to throw up. Grossest thing I’ve ever seen.
That was by far the grossest thing I’ve ever seen on Grey’s, but thinking, “it’s only make-up” made it easier to stomach. However, I feel like puking whenever I see Izzie and George together in the romantic sense – when will it end?!?
Anyone remember that scene from ER where the guy coughed so hard his eyeball popped out? Never get over that one. So glad I don’t watch Grey’s.
I DVR’d the Supernatural episode. The decapated was a revenge-seeking vampire. So the beheading was totally justified.Imagine what CSI has to do to stay ahead of the curve.
The pencil in the eye thing was on the coming attraction, so when I got home from work, pulled out MY DINNER, and played this ep which I dvr’d, I intentionally did not look at the screen. Definitely not the preferable way to watch a tv show. You’re right, though, the gizzie scenes are just as nauseating. Happily, that seems to be ending.
Oh, and thanks for the recap photo. I spent the whole day thinking, gee, I wish I could just see that pencil in the eyeball thing one more time.
Nowhere near as bad as “2 Girls 1 Cup.”
Grow up! Most of what a surgeon does is gross. It was a probable circumstance. Nurses and doctors in the ER see that stuff regularly. Watch a sitcom if you get uneasy.
It bothered me a lot more when the two people wre impaled with the steel pole and one had to die so the other could live… or the Dead Baby races in Seattle… remember that guy who had stuff in his abdomen… i can’t remember the specifics. Kudos to all ER workers!!!
i’d watch it a hundred times if that will make me forget about the whole gizzie extravaganza
it was much worse seeing the brain swell up and pour out of the hole cut in the skull… i actually gasped when they showed that. to me, it was much worse than the pencil. yuck.
I hated it – Grey is usually much more light and doesn’t cross that border into the land of gross. Not this episode – I kept shutting my eyes and squirming. Not an experience I want to remember!
