Apparently not. Here’s Amy Winehouse "performing" at last night’s MTV Europe Awards. She later won the Artists’ Choice award and got booed by the audience. Don’t worry, her feelings weren’t hurt because when your mind, like Winehouse’s, is so often, um, elsewhere, even booing sounds AMAZING. And so, to her ears, must the first line of her song, roughly transcribed as, "Eeee-oooo owww-ayyy ih uh aaaah eh uhhhhh…"

this is my favorite song on the album, a little odd arrangenment live, but still love it. is her looniness and substance problems going to squash her chances of grammy gold? i hope not her CD is fantastic.
Wayyyy overrated. And she’s got the black guys in background to justify and confirm her “bluesy, jazzy, R&B sound”….give me a break…she’s a wreck and way overrated.
I agree with Sally, way overrated. I cannot stand her voice and my gosh you can’t understand a damn word she says!
Does anybody understand what she’s saying? They’re all junkies, such a wreck. (I didn’t hear any boos)
This is what I don’t understand. Amy Whinehouse is getting all the high-fives like she’s the next coming of creation; and Jlo gets all the criticism as a singer….who’s working harder here?
Sad. Such a waste of potential talent.
No one does her any favors by applauding (note: the boos came later on, not in this clip) and buying her albums.
What the hell was that? I haven’t minded her in the past, but it looked like she was seriously on something, and that was an awful performance. If the song was recorded like that, I’m gonna pass.
I also liked how her back up dancers were flailing wildly behind her as she stood in one place looking bewildered. Now that’s entertainment!
if you’ve never heard her cd, you really can’t judge her as a singer. this performance doesn’t showcase her true talent. she has serious problems but that doesn’t take away from the fact that she’s got an awesome talent. she’s definitely not overrated.
Gawd, it’s aaaaawwwful! I love her, but this ruins it!
Before anyone calls me a hater, I LOVE Amy Winehouse. I’ve got three of her CDs (the first one, her rare cuts and the recent album everyone’s gone gaga over). To me, she’s a great looking woman with a fantastic voice, a creative style, and talent in droves.
But she’s also got a serious drug problem that’s getting to a point of no return. Amy can smoke her homegrown, but the heavy drugs have got to stop.
That performance was clearly done while she was on heroin or some sort of opiate (maybe pills?). She lost her rhythm during the chorus of a song she wrote, didn’t use consonants, and could barely stand (much less sway or dance) while she sang. On coke, pot or booze her performance would have been “off” in different ways and I’d still be concerned.
While the media hype’s not quite there yet, this performance was a train wreck of Brittany Spears VMA proportions. Someone needs to get this poor woman’s enablers out of town and her into rehab like now now now.
When I saw her live last Spring in Boston and she was in amazing voice, although she was hardly coherent when she spoke to the audience. I guess I am happy I saw her when I did? She isn’t overrated if you ask me, but it does help that the production on Back to Black is awesome!
Wow. Britney Spears must be loving this because she no longer holds the record for Most Disasterous MTV Award Show Performance! I only wish Sarah Silverman was there to make sense of it all for us.
HO-LEE SCHMIDT! That is scary. And sad…
And people have the nerve to bash Britney. Scoff.
I love Wino. Yeah, she needs help. But I’ll take a drug-addict talent like Amy over a uberproduced Britney any day.
I saw Amy at Lollapalooza and she was amazing. She sounded like Gladys Knight. Somebody get her some help before we’ve got another Janis on our hands.
I couldn’t watch the whole thing. It’s just sad. Her album is really good and I love that song. Help her. Someone. I agree that it looks like Janis all over again.
Perhaps she was singing the song in the original Klingon?
Wow, it started out as awesomely bad, but by the time she got to the bridge I was really sad for her.
Unfortunately, I’m getting a flash about 8 years down the line of this performance being featured as the meltdown scene in “You Know I’m No Good: The Amy Wineshouse Story”, a portrait of another young, talented artist that burned WAY too bright early and left us WAY too early. She needs to get her you know what together.
Winehouse*
Wow. She’s really talented, but she’s going to be dead in a year if she doesn’t get the help she needs. Both she and her junkie husband need to get off the radar for a couple of years and get cleaned up.
Ladies and Gentlemen…the return of Candy Slice!
Wow …..I see an overdose lifetime movie in her future.
Aren’t the backup singers doing the same gibberish? Wow, scary deer-caught-in-headlights action….what, no rehab jokes?
What the hell was that? I think I caught a couple words in there, but jeez. She’s drugged up.
Hey, OK, she was singing in Curious George-ese, but let’s look on the bright side…at least it was on pitch and had some sort of entertaining melisma action going on.
Forget about the damn music for one second. Someone posted that they would take a drugged up incomprehensible Winehouse over some stupid popstar like Britney.
This is so sad to watch. She needs help. Her LIFE is on the line – who cares about how good her music is. This is why she’s up there singing (if you call it that) instead of getting help, because people’s priorities are all f’ed up.
Somebody put her in rehab and throw away the keys. I’ll gladly sacrifice having to listen to the likes of Britney if it means Winehouse won’t die chocking on her own vomit.
I agree that Amy Winehouse needs help and should be getting it instead of trying to perform. However, I’m not sure if her “handlers” are to blame here. You can’t help someone who doesn’t want to be helped, and clearly, from the interviews I’ve read, Amy doesn’t want to be helped. Perhaps performing is the only thing keeping her alive at this point.
Very sad, I agree. I hope she has a change of heart soon and gets serious about getting better.
I forwarded this clip to a friend who’s a huge Amy Winehouse fan. He replied to me that he’d heard a rumor that Amy Winehouse won’t be able to tour in the US. Apparently her arrest in Norway for Pot posession gives her a criminal record, which makes it harder for her to get a visa.
Can anyone confirm or deny this? Thanks!
