'Kid Nation': Nathan's famous!

Kid_lFrom the desk of Alynda Wheat:

Did you notice? No Pageant Princess Taylor! Wish wecould say our favorite little autocrat was missed, but what withtable-flipping, gold-star campaigning, and a crappily contrivedtreasure hunt, there just wasn’t time.

After seven weeks, it seems the evil geniuses behindthe Nation are running out of ways to make their young charges lookbad, because they’re recycling the greed-is-good plot from episode 2.First up was Divad (yes, I know it’s David spelled backwards andthat’s unusual — but you can’t expect somebody named Alynda Wheat to castthat stone), who suddenly decided to sell what everyone used to get forfree. The came fan fave Jared flipping out, and going all Oreo to herHydrox, pissed that he hadn’t thought of it first (and ending up makingmore money anyway).

As if that weren’t enough, campaigning for the goldstar went from virtual (sob stories, attitude conversions, a suddencompulsion to work) to literal, with Divad turning into the mostobsequious child on television since Jason Bateman left Silver Spoons.Lay it on a little thinner next week, kiddo.

But look — there’s a bright shiny spot in the middle oftown! It’s.it’s a kid we’ve never seen before! PopWatchers, meetNathan. Nathan, PopWatchers.

Nathan, it seems, is a precociouslyresponsible home-schooled type person. (Hey, Guylan’s home-schooledtoo! Shouldn’t we develop some sort of conspiracy theory about that?)Turns out, while we were distracted by Hurricane Pageant Princess, there was Nathan, taking guff from Greg every day (welcome to bullying,home-school kid), and doing way more work than God intended for an11-year-old. But lo and behold, hard work paid off and Nathan won his$20K gold star. The best part? It made him almost as excited as thegold-star stickers he gets from his mom.

So funniest moment of the night, PopWatchers? Kelsey, she of the Bush bon mot that you don’t need to be smart to lead, declaring that despite Bill Gates’ millions, nobody ever had a problemwith Microsoft? Or the reward-challenge fashion show at the end? Speak!

The funniest moment had to be Jared’s Old West pimp outfit. Kid was cracking me up!

  • AA

Kristi, you beat me to the punch: I too loved Jared’s pimp outfit! That kid is nuts.

  • Luis PJ

Nathan seem to be a mini version of Bill Pullman…Also seem pretty nice that we got to seem them play in the town…we been given them grief for not picking the spoils like that Pink BQ grill and the town counsel, for whatever idea they had, turn out to be good one. I also like the intramural mom and pop store dilemma and as well as Jared from going hulk, to hippy and then to pimp(or dress nicely)
I thought with Taylor of this episode…as much anger most people have with her, How many would miss much of her in this episode…she got a few lines in and there and was getting the treatment of become not notice. Thought she had her moment like she didn’t rase her hand among the rest in the town meeting.

  • mark in nyc

Agreed. Jared in the ye olde pimp outfit would have made Al swearengen blush…so funny. He knew it too.
did notmiss Ms. Deal wit it at all.
I really enjoy those last moments over the credits (fashion show).
really wish more people were watching this show!
    Go Jared

  • Jenla

THANK GOD we didn’t have to witness another Taylor tantrum. I believe it was on this very blog last week that we were all crying for the producers to include more kids from the show; there are 38 of them afterall. Way to go Nathan for forcing the show into a different direction other than ‘kids gone wild’! Well there was Jared’s Pimp moment…out of control!! lol

  • Rob Grizzly

I loved the set up: he’s counting the money, tallying clothes, and we’re like, “With all his riches why does he want to buy a hat?” Cut to: Jared in full old west Pimp attire, complete with twirling cane! And the reaction of the other kid was great! Funneist moment on fall TV.
I also enjoyed Sophia getting kids to dig into the bottom of a slop-filled pot just for her own amusement. She’s awesome.
Yes, I missed Taylor. At least she got to say the new outfits were “pretty cute.” You may take the council out of the princess, but you can’t take the princess out of the girl!
I was moved by Nathan’s gold star win- from 1 vote! From his sworn enemy! Who says all the best dramas are serialized programs? I wonder if he’ll ever find out that his mystery benefactor was the boy who’d been giving him such a hard time.
Next week when I saw all the kids laying in the dirt, I thought a plague had hit Bonanza! Oh, they’re just bored, whew! But I’m looking forward to the talent show!

  • Chris G

Thanks for the recap, i really love this show. I’d be so bored at work without it. I even took a break from my scary movie marathon last night just to tune in and it’s as good as ever!

  • Matt

    Home-schoolers are freaks. Poor kids.

  • Anna

Rob Grizzly, that cane Jared was twirling was actually a long lollipop.
I’m really enjoying this show. I hope it gets renewed for another season.

  • deedee

Jared & the pimp outfit was great. But Sophia, she is a star too! From dancing for nickels to get her bike at the beginning to making others dig through gross food, this girl is smart, sassy & self confident. I love her!

  • Luis PJ

I just notice that this was the incident the we heard from the beginning about some kid getting burn prior to the start of series

  • Valerie

Oooh, I hadn’t realized that the “burn victim” was the “Kind Potato Girl”, aka Divad. The very one who said she wouldn’t let “a few splatters2 come in the way of her making money…
I just love Laurel, she is smart ! She seems to be the real leader of this town !

  • Lilac

Now we know why that mom freaked about her kid’s burns–what do you want to bet Divad NEVER gets the gold star. Went home and whined to mom that she really deserved it because she was working so hard. Mom decides to make a fuss to get back at the show that deprived her kid of her rightful $20,000. On a lighter note–LOVE that Sophia. That girl is sooo interesting and intelligent.

  • Becky

I have to agree with the other kids about Nathan. It seems he missed his childhood. I don’t know if homeschooling is to blame. I know children who were homeschooled who weren’t so serious, but, poor nathan. He is too serious. Hopefully the rest of his time in Bonanza city will be more relaxed.

  • AAR

I was also glad Nathan got the gold star, but let’s call a spade a spade- kid’s got OCD big time. That’s what I thought each time he was on, esp. with that spoon washing.
Still love Sophia and Laurel. Can’t believe the producers sent them on a treasure hunt. Next season needs more kids and no more journal.

  • Alynda

YES!!! The Frontier Pimp outfit! Sorry guys, meant to include that. And how fitting that it aired on Halloween. Bless you, Jared, and your sartorial sassiness!

  • AA

Maybe Jared’ll open a brothel in ye olde Bonanza, to go with his snazzy duds.

  • RayT

Nathan’s late-night laundry obession was a little freaky. I was waiting for him to storm into the bunks, start yanking clothes out of the closet and scream, “NO WIRE HANGERS EVER!”

  • Michele

I love Kid Nation and I love me some Jared, Playa, Playa!!!!

  • jes

LOVED Jared’s Saturday Night Live strut through town! The pièce de résistance was the wide-brimmed hat. I love that kid…he is definitely the man! And Sophia is a hoot, too. “I found this pot of slop…somewhere. And I just happen to know that there’s money in bottom.”

  • DanOregon

So they passed on the coin-op washer and dryer for new clothes and spend the rest of the hour being immersed in communism by the town council. So far I’ve learned that greed is bad, environmentalism is good, and nutrition and dental hygiene are important. This reminds me of those “Time for Timer” shorts ABC used to run on their afterschool specials. When is the chapter on war and violence?

  • Jose

Jared is the man yes. if you go to the CBS website you can see little profiles and interviews for each kid. Jared thinks Bush is good and CLinton bad, seems his parents have him brainwashed but hell learn as he gets older. The meditation quote he had a few weeks back was a good one too.

  • SDA333

I love this show! Best new show of the Fall Season by far!!!

  • Liz

I liked Nathan’s phone call home…talking to his mom and sister, it seemed less fprced then any other previous phone calls home by the gold star winners

  • Charles

Yeah, I just watched the last few episodes on CBS.com…Jared has to be the funniest kid on TV right now…can you imagine what he’ll be like in a few years? LOL!!
And Sophia is, hands down, the most fun to watch in action. I have a feeling she’s going to have a lot more great things up her sleeve in the next few episodes :-)

  • tim

this show rules, but don’t you find it wierd there is no “relationship” drama cause that is bacicaly teen life!
