Country Death Song by Violent Femmes- I literally get scared at the end when he is doing that screechy yell. ooh chills!
Good call on this one!! When I was in middle school, my friends and I used to listen to this song at night when we were camping. This song gave me the spine-shiver ever time I heard it.
Can’t believe nobody’s mentioned the most obvious choice, Blue Oyster Cult’s “(Don’t Fear)the Reaper”. Less obvious, but my own pick, is the Stones’ “Gimme Shelter”. The lyrics help, but it’s the overall sound of it that works. It sounds like the end of the world.
97 bonnie and clyde by tori amos totally freaks me out. i saw her perform it live, and it gives me chills just thinking about
I love “I Want You” – and yes, it’s the creepiest love song ever. A couple of other good stalker songs are “Delia’s Gone” by Johnny Cash and “Run for Your Life” by the Beatles (not kidding, check it out). For the posters who like Alice Cooper (I do, too), check out “Blue Turk” from the School’s Out album.
AC/DC’s “Hell’s Bells”…that clock chiming at the beginning always freaks me out.
Two more great Halloween tunes: “Sleepwalk” by Santo and Johnny and “Strange Face of Love” by Tito and Tarantula. And an episode of the X-Files called “Home” completely did me in for all time on Johnny Mathis.
“Sweet Dreams” by Marilyn Manson pretty much freaked me out. But also the song “To be a millionair… Was it likely?” by Spacehog is pretty scary itself. It’s about a guy named Terry, who does some bad things, but the topper comes from the secret song at the end which is nothing but freaky ghost noises.
Good choices popwatchers! One that scared me as a kid in the 70s was Love Rollercoaster by the Ohio Players because of the urban legend about a woman’s death scream being captured on the song.
Glad to see other people put down “Every Breath you Take.” That’s the first song I thought of too!
The Cure’s “Close to Me” used to freak me out because I would lie in bed at night and imagine there was a real head on my door. OK, yes, I’m a weenie. “Danse Macabre” by Saint-Saens is a pretty scary classical piece. I always think of that scene from “Fantasia” when I hear “Night on Bald Mountain.”
Interestingly the album “The Head on the Door” was named after a nightmare Robert Smith used to have, just of a head on top of his door, staring down at him. Sounds pretty damn creepy doesn’t it?
“People are Strange” by The Doors used to freak me out as a kid. Maybe because it was tied to the Lost Boys and that movie freaked me out with the vampires.
When I was little my brother would play “Smoke on the Water” to get me out of his room. I thought it was summoning the devil music.
Its so stupid but when i read this article Forever Autumn by Justin Hayward jumped straight into my head. I cant listen to it simply for the reason that my dad used to torture me with Jeff Waynes ‘war of the worlds’album and i was scared of every song on there!
“Hazard” by Richard Marx. The song never bothered me much until I saw the video. Now the video leaps to mind when I hear the opening bars, and it still heebs me out to this day.
‘Mother’ by John Lennon
Really, that whole first album (Plastic Ono Band), but this song is the most harrowing. Never before (and since?) had anyone barred themselves so nakedly on record.
