Which classic rocker loves cabooses?

Rstewart_lIn our continuing effort to illuminate the darkest recesses of the pop culture universe, we’ve uncovered something mystifying. Something exotic. Something forbidden.

We’ve discovered what rock icon Rod Stewart likes to do, all by himself, with tiny marvels of machinery in the palms of his hands. And it involves special terminology like "kitbashing" and "scratchbuilding."

Oh, you know you’re gonna click to find out.

From a press release we got yesterday morning:

WAUKESHA, WI — Hall of fame rock-n-roller Rod Stewart unwinds after a concert by kitbashing and scratchbuilding. These terms may sound like code words that explain the mysterious antics of a world-famous celebrity, but instead they describe techniques for one of the world’s most popular hobbies: model railroading.

The acclaimed songwriter of hits like "Reason to believe" and "Maggie May" contacted Model Railroader magazine to talk about his other achievement, "Grand Street & Three Rivers Railroad."

Stewart offered Model Railroader magazine exclusive access to his 1,500-square-foot model-train layout that takes up the third floor of his Beverly Hills home. The visit to his home and interview with Stewart resulted in a cover story—"Rod Stewart’s Three Rivers City"—for the December 2007 issue of Model Railroader—the world’s best-selling magazine dedicated to the hobby.

"I’m proud to be a railway modeler," Stewart said. "It means more to me to be on the cover of Model Railroader than to be on the cover of a music magazine."

Of course it does…Rod.

Neil Young was part of a group that purchased Lionel Trains 12 years ago, so maybe this is what old rockers like to do when they stop with all the drugs.

Sounds like Rod’s ready to join up with Bobby Bacala of the Sopranos for some toy train action…
Kitbashing is also popular among toy collectors. For example, taking the GI JOE Fridge action figure and using paints n parts to turn him into a Green Bay Packer figure would be kitbashing.
Also, now that many toys are being reissued (like transformers) kitbashing can also mean taking parts from the 2005 Starscream figure to complete the 1984 starscream figure.
Yes, I’m a total dork and hobby nut. You wanna make something of it?
