What were the year's most entertaining places?

Categories: Water Cooler

Rock_lAlrighty, PopWatchers. We asked for your help in brainstorming for our 2007 "Entertainers of the Year" issue, and you came through like Lassie to a child in a well — 1,500 suggestions and counting! (That sound you hear is an intern weeping.) Well, now, we’re midway through a rousing, staff-wide throw-down about the most entertaining places of the last 12 months. This, of course, is a tough one, since it encompasses real destinations (concert venues and such), fictional ones (Hogwarts!), and combinations of the two, like my suggestion, 30 Rockefeller Plaza — home to the real-life Today show set, but also Tina Fey’s hilarious imagined world of 30 Rock (and its show-within-a-show Girlie Show). Meta!

So your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to tell us: What were the year’s three most entertaining places? And just as important, tell us why. Quick, get to writing, folks: This blog item will self-destruct in 60 seconds!

    Scranton!

  • Liz

    -The Dunder Mifflin Office

Dillion, Texas: Home to the best drama on network television. And the most realistic married couple to grace our TV sets in many years.
New Orleans: A city on the rebound, but who managed to bring the music roaring back. Voodoo Fest just wrapped; not many places can give you the Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against the Machine, Fall Out Boy, and the Plain White Ts all in one spot.
New York: Shows have made their way back to the Big Apple (not that they ever left; hello, L&O). What other city can give you the same settings for Heroes, Ugly Betty, CSI, and, yes, three Law and Orders. You can’t have a list of entertaining places without NYC– no matter how obvious it might seem.

CBGB- It’s gone but still entertaining. Can you have an R.I.P. section?

  • KW

    1. Wherever the hell Lost takes place!
    2. Randall’s Island, FarmAid 2007.
    3. The Pie Hole from Pushing Daisies. (I would LOVE to go there if it were real.)

  • Marie

Um… I would say that rehab, in general, has been one of the most enetertaining places of the last year.

  • Julie

Definitely wherever the hell LOST takes place!

  • coltsfan

    1. Miami (USA’s Burn Notice)
    2. Scranton (for obvious reasons)
    3. Indianapolis (for the Colts finally winning the big one)

  • Tamara

30 Rock, for sure. On board the Galactica. Neptune, CA (*sniff*).
And because there appears not to be a way to email you directly, Michael, I thought I’d throw this in here. In an effort to keep it on topic, may I suggest Bothell, WA? And, on that note, you should really check this out if you haven’t already: http://us.video.aol.com/player/launcher?ar=us_en_audio_748×541_full&pmmsid=2011544

    1. I graduated from the University of Scranton. so SCRANTON definetely one of the most most entertaining places on tv, cause god knows it wasn’t in real life.
    2. The offices of MODE Magazine. Where the decor is a pointed as the words exchanged in those fashionable hallways.
    3. and definetely – Burn Notice’s Miami. A way cooler Miami than CSI – Miami’s Miami. it’s the same Miami only Not.

  • mykietown

the Lost island…try putting that on a map!!!

  • Aaron

The diner from the end of The Sopranos.
    Ancient Sparta, I guess.
And, between Burn Notice and Top Chef, I’d have to echo Miami.

  • Auriana

Hogwarts – Between Deathly Hallows and the Order of the Phoenix movie, it’s been the year of Harry Potter.

  • Snooks

I’m with Mozz…the MODE Magazine offices.
    Also:
*Britney Spear’s head (is there anything in there??!?!!!)
    *Lost’s Island(s)

The Palms in Las Vegas on September 9, 2007. This was the day of this year’s MTV VMAs and brought us, the Britney Spears Debacle, Kanye West’s whining like a little girl after he didn’t get his way thus subsequently saying that he would ‘boycott’ the network, and televised concerts in hotel rooms. Second the precint where they they mugshots because everyone was getting in trouble with the law and not going to jail, (except maybe for Paris). And finally, rehab which must have been a very interesting place to be this year because EVERYONE was going to rehab, from Britney, to Lindsay, to Jonathan Rhys Meyers, to even Samaire Armstrong and John Goodman, with the exception of Amy Winehouse, (but she finally said, yes, yes, yes, when they told her to go). All these places must have been interesting becaus if not, there is no reason for celebrities to have gone there, and for us to have talked about them

1.) CBS Studios- home to both the final Bob Barker episode of “The Price is Right” and Marie Osmond’s fainting spot on”Dancing with the Stars”.
2.) Las Vegas- The sight of Britney’s now legendary performance.
3.) New York City- Where great shows like Dirty Sexy Money, Gossip Girl, and Damages all take place!

warehouse store like Buy More and the Tool Box(?) from Chuck and Reaper. I really think that both store really fit into their shows like a charactuer.
New York – I am going to agree with KT and say that New York is back on TV like never before. This season we had Ted from HIMYM, speech about “almost new york”; Gossip girl really shows a side of new york elite that I don’t think has been on TV before(at least none that I watch) and while 30 Rock hasn’t had the New York plots like last season’s “Cleaveland” However Little Chechnya could only be in New York.

  • Heather

Baltimore – bringing you the best show ever on television (The Wire) and the confectionary fun of Hairspray.

  • Jennifer

    1) Hogwarts
    2) New Caprica
    3) The Hot Gates (Thermopylae) of 300

  • Auriana

I’ll repeat my vote from earlier for Hogwarts and add two more:
    2. I second ancient Sparta, not just because of 300 but also God of War II.
    3. Ivalice – My favorite world out of the Final Fantasy series. You have Final Fantasy XII (granted this came out last October), the release of the redone original FF Tactics on the PSP, FF Tactics Advanced 2 (granted only a Japan release so far) and next month’s FF XII: Revenant Wings all taking place there. The world is beautifully designed.

  • Chaddogg

    Gotta go with:
    1) 30 Rockefeller Plaza – you nailed this one, Slezak.
    2) Dillon, Texas – I love this suggestion, too. If we have to be specific, anywhere Coach and Tami Taylor are, or else where Saracen and Landry are hanging out.
    3) Lost’s Island – dangerous to characters, but entertaining for the rest of us.
Bonus 4: Hogwarts – I’d put it in the top 3, but SOOOO much of Deathly Hallows happened AWAY from Hogwarts. Still, a worthy choice.

  • beetle

    Dunder Mifflin!

  • Wilson

Scranton / Dunder Mifflin (The Office)
New York City (Heroes, 30 Rock, Spiderman 3, Trailer for Cloverfields)
Rehab Centers (Lohan, Britney, Isiah Washington, etc.)
China (Survivor, America’s Next Top Model, Olympics)
Rock The Bells (concert sold out in minutes)

  • MEM

Madison Ave. in the 1960s world of Mad Men.

  • Taylor

    1) The Daryl Roth Theatre’s Fuerzabruta. The new show from the creators of De La Guarda. It’s hip and about to break out as the BIG show of the year, in the same way De La Guarda and earned itself a spot in EW’s Best of… issue.
    2) ABC. Desperate Housewives is back with a vengence. Grey’s Anatomy is looking like its on its way back. Brothers & Sisters is at its peak. Could this network be any more HOT!
    3) Las Vegas. The Britney Spears appearance says it all! Poor thing.

  • tia

Lost’s Island- VW Van, Rotting Ship, Secret Under Water lab, Plenty of Hotties (male and female). Why do they want to leave again?
McClaren’s Bar-It’s where the Awesome happens. Barney’s moving truck is outside, and it’s where we got Naked Marshall, and Swarley!
Great Britain- All the best stuff comes from GB. Hugh Laurie, Hellen Mirren, Christian Bale, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Harry Potter, Dr. Who and Torchwood. If not for them we wouldn’t have the Office or American Idol.

  • Ames

    Aboard the Battle Star Gallactica

  • Stef

    1. Cheyenne Mountain- 10 years of Stargate anyone?
    2. Onboard Battlestar: Galactica.
    3. The LOST Island.
Wow, I have given away my cover and revealed myself as a Sci Fi geek.

  • Dixie

    Scranton/Dunder Mifflin (The Office)
    Miami (Dexter)
    Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital (House)
    Bedford-Stuyvesant (Everybody hates Chris)
    Quahog (Family Guy)
    and always
    Springfield (The Simpsons)

  • Liz

Ditto GB. Torchwood is amazing! It fills the Stargate/X-Files vibe! (Meeting new aliens/no one knows about the top secret agency)
