Judging from its trailer, Step Up 2: TheStreets manages to do something pretty impressive — that is, to cram in clichés and plot lines from almost every majordance movie of the last 30 years. The snooty conservatoryballerinas from Center Stage? Check. The underground dance-offs from Breakin‘? Check. The initial friction betweenthe love interests from Dirty Dancing?Check. Oh yeah, throw in a scruffy fish-out-of-water heroine (Save the LastDance) and a geeky friend (Fame) justfor good measure. I haven’t seen Step Up,but I’ll admit that I wanted to when I first saw its trailer. However, thissequel, opening Valentine’s Day ’08, seems so derivative, I’m gonna have to pass. Besides, they lost me when Chase (Robert Hoffman) declares: "She has more talent, and more conviction than anyone else I know!" Blërg.
Watchthe trailer for yourself, and see how many recycled plots you recognize. Ten points for every new ripoff you mention in the comments section below!

Could this sound more like a straight-to-DVD release?
Ten points to me…The parents/admin. saying no to letting that one girl dance with the “street crew”. From Dirty Dancing and Save the Last Dance
hey, i saw the first Step Up, (date movie, i was trying to get a hand job..nevermind)and it was exquisitely terrible.
But I have to say atleast in this one, while the plot is a complete throwaway, the breaking scenes look inventive and stylish.
Now if I could just find that girl’s phone #…
SHE HAS MORE TALENT, MORE CONVICTION THAN ANYONE ELSE I KNOW!!!!
HA HA AH hahahahaha!!!!
Straight from Showgirls! Gimme 10 points!
You’re straying way too far from the purpose and idea behind this movie. The target audience is teenagers, college students, dance fans, & those who enjoy this specific genre of film. Those movies you mention, much like Step Up 2, are intended for mainstream movie goers. Step Up 2 looks to have some time tested formulas improved upon, an attractive lead male and female lead w/ love sub-plot (who have sick dance MOVES), an underdog storyline and BOO-YA: its an entertaining & highly watchable flick. This works perfectly for the films desired audience and is the reason Step Up 2 has such a large following already. I watched the first one on a rainy Sunday and was pleasantly surprised by it, thus I’ll def. be seeing Step Up 2 Valentines Day weekend, and score points with my special lady-friend in the process. Enjoy this movie for what it is, that’s all I’m trying to say.
white dress, salsa-esque dancing: Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights anyone?
And the only thing that made Step Up 1 watchable was Channing Tatum. Bring him back and I may just have to go see this one in letters.
Oh my God, this has got to be the funniest comedy of the year. SAVE the LAST DANCE in REVERSE… The actors are all pretty, which is nice, but I don’t think any of them could act their way out of a paper bag.
whatever i’m totally there. i saw step up opening weekend. and as much as i wanted to hate it, it totally won me over. this doesn’t look nearly as good, but that could be worth it.
Agreed, it looks craptastic. Why do Hollywood dance movies suck so much? The dancing’s usually good but the acting and stories are just terrible. The only one that’s remotely watchable is “The Company” and that plays more like a documentary. Being a former dancer, I want to see these movies and enjoy them but it’s just…so…hard… Maybe someone should write a book on this topic.
What’s cute about this one is that instead of just the street girl bringing some street to the high faluting dance school, this one has the high faluting folk asking the street girl to teach them how to conquer the street. So that’s a bit different, actually.
Um, forget this movie..why is there not a Trailer Blazer for REPO: THE GENETIC OPERA. http://youtube.com/watch?v=GfJxCYTKOi8
This clip needs to be spread far and wide because it radiates the same GOODBAD as my personal favorite movie ever The Wicker Man: Nic Cage style.
Umm..Stomp the yard anyone?
Isn’t this surprisingly similar?
I want 10 points.
Channing Tatum has a role in Step Up 2, and Robert Hoffman is a silly dancer, from all accounts. I’m not going to lie, I’m excited about this flick as I was blind sided by the first one, and think this looks better.
That looks retarded.
The wearing ‘proper etire’ and ‘spitting out the gum’ thing in ballet class was TOTALLY ripped off from Center Stage!
10 points!
Is it just me or is the whole “lets-dance-a-highly-choreographed-scene-whilst-in-the-rain” thing a rip-off of “Stomp” from Broadway…..that smells like 10 points to me!
