'Lars' and the disturbing (or fascinating?) article on RealDoll

Categories: Film, News You Can Use

Lars_lI fully intend to see Ryan Gosling’s new movie Lars and the Real Girl, but I can’t decide if I really needed to see this AP article on RealDoll, the brand of silicone surrogate Gosling befriends in the film. According to the piece,"Customers can choose from 10 body types, 16 faces and 17 hairstyles to create their dream girl. They specify skin tone, hair and eye color, makeup palette and nail-polish shade. The dolls have interchangeable faces ($500 each), so with the pull of some Velcro and the flip of a wig, she’s like a whole new gal."

The first time I read the article, I was disturbed. The second time, I was more fascinated. (One guy sits and watches TV with his doll? Interesting…) The third time, I zeroed in on this sentence— "There is also a male doll, ‘Charlie,’ who stands 5′8" and weighs 130 pounds"— and was kinda pissed. A male doll? So much for the custom Clooney I was going to expense watch Golden Girls reruns with. (What? He guest-starred on the show. He’d have liked it.)

P.S. I’m going to print out this post in case Human Resources asks why I visited the extremely NSFW RealDoll website.

P.P.S. "Charlie" is actually my type.

There was a documentary on BBC America called “Love Me, Love My Doll” that my friends and I watched as if it were a bad accident. It follows men the movie is based on. At the point one of the men cleans his doll’s you know what with a toilet brush we had reached our limit. When we heard there was a movie about this with Ryan Gosling we were intrigued, but are afraid it will ruin Ryan for us forever.

    What does NSFW mean?

  • Fatima

    NSFW= Not Safe For Work
Which is what you should expect for a site like RealDoll:)

I don’t want to buy one. But I would take one as a gift. Beyond that, it’s none of your business.

The “Charlie” doll is based off the founder of the companies face. That’s just yucky, plus the male doll doesn’t offer much customization, also you can order a she-male if you want, which again is kind of icky.

The documentary that Erik mentioned can be viewed at http://youhavefoundasecret.wordpress.com/2007/08/14/real-dolls-documentary-wrenchingly-sad-and-creepy/
I was unnerved by all the poking around in plastic vaginas, by the manufacturers and repair guy. To them, the doll is a merely a thing, while the owners think quite differently.

Erik, Ryan’s very actorly deliberate weight gain for this movie may be what ruins him for you forever. Once you seen Noah fidget in his drawz, it’s difficult to want to see anything else.

I find it fascinating that anyone took a shot at this movie. It’s as weird a premise (although based in reality) as Being John Malkovich…and I guess that should have clued me in that there will always be SOME goofball producer who will give it a go.

Is this the film based on a script that you guys wrote an article about a couple years ago? Something like the “black list” of unproduced screenplays that all the prime players in Hollywood know about, but haven’t produced? I remember a mention of a script that was about a guy falling in love with a blow-up doll and this was so similar I had to ask.

  • EP Sato

Jenny P, now that you mention it, this movie DOES remind me of that video that Scott Brown (former Popwatch contributer turned weekly rundown dude) made. In the video, he confronts his “girlfriend” (a mannequin) about how he suspects she’s been cheating on him.
Her silence is like a deafening denial until Mr. Brown produces a male mannequin arm. It ends right about there…

Ep Sato: I love the way you always have something to add. Your wife is a fortunate woman to have found the fountain of knowledge.
    This movie is creepy.

I find it hard to come to terms with the fact that someone actually made this picture. I envision a world where single men will buy more of these Realdolls, leaving thousands of single women unmarriageable.

Well well well. Anybody curious as to the actual fate of the Bianca doll? Some guy from Canada named David Hockey (lol!) bought it, drove it all the way back out to California, had it made “functional”, and had a forum site and documentary made about the whole thing. If you’re brave just check out dollchronicles.com. Yes, he really did all that. Paid thousands for her using money earned from selling plush sexdolls.

I noticed someone has a used Realdoll for sale on eBay and I was thinking of putting a bid on it. It would make a great novelty item for my shop. Does anyone know what a reasonable price might be for an item like this ? Thank you in advance for your comments – Diane

  • JennoMate

Howard Stern raved it was The Best SEX I’ve ever had!” Why wouldn’t you want the best sex of your life with your fantasy girl? While it is true most of the JennoMates sell over 6K. Look at the Realdoll website, but if you want to know where to buy them for $2,700? Call Keith at 512.739.5902
