I'm tempted to watch '7th Heaven' repeats. Should I?

Who_lDamn you, Barry Watson. First, you and your short hair make me publicly declare What About Brian "non-sucky." Now, after seeing both of you in ABC’s Samantha Who?, I’m wondering if I need to watch 7th Heaven repeats. Should I?

Here’s the dilemma: I know that 7th Heaven was the WB’s No. 1 show for years. But I also know that in 2002, when I needed to watch a couple episodes to fact-check a review in EW, I had to press "pause" and emotionally regroup before subjecting myself to more bad acting from one of the Stults brothers. (That’s the only time in my 10-year career I’ve needed a time-out.) Also, I’m guessing that Barry’s hair was not at optimal length. And I’m afraid I could become attracted to Stephen Collins.

So, to recap: Should I give 7th Heaven another shot? Is there a particular episode you’d recommend? And if you, too, have a thing for Barry Watson, can you explain it?

Barry Watson is hot, but 7th Heaven is just dreadful. Don’t do it!!!

While I understand that you might want to watch it because Barry Watson is in it. He is a great actor in everything he’s in. But the acting of most everybody else on 7th Heaven is horrible. The only reason I watched it ’til the end was because I felt obligated to watch it to see how it ends. But out of all the shows I have watched, 7th Heaven is probably my least favorite, and it is in large part due to the acting of the twins, and others. And it’s not just the acting, it’s the lines they have to say. Some of the lines they have to say are so cheesy that I’m wondering why they are saying them when we get what’s going on without them trying to explain stuff in dialog. We get it!

Oh dear God, Mandi. DON’T DO IT! 7th Heaven has been known to cause severe loss of IQ points as well as significant damage to television sets due to objects being violently thrown at the screen. But if you’re determined to watch, arm yourself with recaps from televisionwithoutpity.com. Trust me, it’s the only way you’ll survive.

Poor writing, bad acting. 7th heaven is smarmy, obnoxious, preachy crap.

I’m not sure if 7th heaven decreased in quality or if I just got older. I used to look forward to Monday nights, so that my entire family could watch it. Given i sort of lost interest after a few seasons…

  • Working Girl

His hair is of an absolutely revolting length for his ENTIRE run on 7th Heaven. And his character is at all times either whining or preaching. If you’re looking for a way to kill your Barry Watson attraction, I’d recommend tuning in. But if you hope to continue enjoying him (in a way, being acquainted with Matt Camden, I never can), then avoid it at all costs.

  • Molly

Well, if you do tune back in (and I don’t recommend it in the least), I hear someone in the family has twins tonight.
Oh wait, that’s absolutely EVERY night.

For some reason Barry Watson’s character got dumber as he got older. He was actually most likeable in the 1st/2nd seasons of 7th Heaven, while he was still in high school. He was the responsible, mature older brother to all his sisters’ hijinks (and with boy-crazy Mary and Lucy, there were many!). After a few seasons he just got a little too manic for my tastes – and the big brother routine got a little too intrusive, especially when he was “going to be a doctor” and worked at the hospital. Plus for some reason they stopped washing his hair and all you can focus on is the messy, greasy-looking hair that must have had too much product in it. Towards the end his character was so annoying, it was one of the reasons I refused to watch “WAB”.

  • Silv

Ha ha, just read “working girl’s” comments about his hair. It really was much nicer looking that first year, even though it was longer than that of the teenage boys I knew at that time. Then it just got yucky.
Oh, and overall, the acting does suck.

I hate HATE HATE 7th heaven. Horrible acting and annoying ass story lines. But, however, once in awhile I will suffer through it just to see Barry Watson. And I only watched “What About Brian?” to see him as well.
    He is just…yummy.

  • Alanna

God, Barry Watson is such a cutie. It should be illegal to be that cute. However, no amount of cuteness should EVER EVER drive someone to watch 7th Heaven. And shame on you Mandi for even suggesting it. As adorable as Barry Watson is, 7th Heaven’s suckiness is more powerful than Barry Watson’s hotness.

  • Jessica

To cure your Barry Watson withdrawl, go watch Teaching Mrs. Tingle. He’s pretty hot in that.

  • Melanie

    Don’t torture yourself.

  • jen, tx

No, Mandi, you should not watch it. This is coming from someone who watched it for years (I was a kid…don’t hold it against me). And you shouldn’t be ashamed about Stephen Collins either. He’s 30-40 years older than I am, and I think he’s hot. For an old guy. But Barry, Barry appeal lies in the fact that he’s hot any way you look at it.

    Nooooo!!!!
7th Heaven was just awful dreck. Bad acting, horrible dialogue, and incessant preachiness. So, if you like watching train wrecks like that, go ahead. Otherwise, stay very far away.
