At the Kelly Clarkson concert I attended earlier this week at New York’s Beacon Theater, the rumor was that Clive Davis was also in attendance. Read the full post.

I agree w/ Rasha. CD sales are overrated. Kelly sold 600,000+ and some artists would KILL for those numbers.
She’s going to be around a long time. Still young, still has a lot to learn, but that voice will carry her far.
As great a career as Clive Davis has had, his butchering of Kelly’s CD will always be remembered. He let his ego get in the way. Everyone knows that the music business is struggling, to put it kindly, and Kelly’s CD was supposed to be the CD of the year. But because she didn’t do things Mr. Big-Shot’s way, the CD tanked. Without a record company’s support, singles do not have a chance to get played on the radio. Hope you’re happy, Clive. I’m not even a fan of Kelly’s, but what he did to this artist was awful.
I’m upset that I’ll be missing the concert. At least I’ll have her CDs to hold me over until she ventures out again.
MD sales are about half of what Breakaway sales were after the same number of weeks. At 9 weeks out, Breakaway had sold 1.2 million in the US. MD would have done better with more promotion to radio but Clive didn’t want to spend the $$$. He wanted to teach Kelly a lesson that he could squash her and her sales if she didn’t play nice. He’s a prime example of how music industry executives are helping to drive CD sales lower year after year.
Clive Davis didn’t like Kelly Clarkson’s album, therefore the company didn’t promote it. That’s the main reason it tanked. Anyone who thinks that they buy music or anything else only because of their free will is crazy. The record didn’t sell because the company didn’t want it to sell.
Funny, I just re-read the Kelly Clarkson cover story from May of this year (yes I’m a big Kelly fan) and she says that she knows this records is not as mainstream and she gets that it will not sell like Breakaway. But this is her now and she had to put it out there. She has a new video out for “Don’t Waste Your Time” (YouTube it) and I think if RCA and Clive get behind it she can have another radio hit. She deserves it. Nice to see Clive attended her concert though.
Clive Davis is a bore…
Yeah, the album didn’t sell well not because of lack of hits, but because the label didn’t promote it at all. They released ONE single. That’s it. I’m sorry. Records don’t sell on the strength of one single anymore. There’s plenty of radio-friendly songs here, especially “How I Feel”.
Clive said the album wasn’t going to sell because Kelly went against his advice. If the album HAD sold well, that would look Clive look like an idiot…and we all know they can’t let that happen.
Clive Davis has been wrong a few times before with other artists. He did not sign Foreigner, and they went on to sell millions of records. The man may be rich, but he is not always smart.
I forgot the T in heartbreak, sorry for the typo.
One more thing:Carrie Underwood looks awful with that haircut, and she looks like she is starving. I remember someone calling her chunky. The girl never looked like she had any fat on her to begin with. Whoever is giving her diet advice, needs to stop. I hope she does not land in the hospital. A thread should be started on her new look. Poor thing.
I must agree that an album success is due to the backing or lack of backing from the Label. Clive Davis indeed did not support this album and did want to make his point! Face it when someone especially someone older and with power wants to make a point, they will go all out to make that point! Regardless Kelly Clarkson has an awesome voice and that alone will keep her around for years to come.Simon on many occassions has labeled Kelly Clarkson as having one of the best pop voices of now. Come on Clive Davis even knows that! My December seems to be a bigger hit internationally then it is in the US, but still that is an amazing thing when an album can do well internationally!! It has been said that Kelly has agreed to do an album with more POP tracks and Clive is suppose to back the next one up, so we will see, but for now!! Kelly Clarkson will continue to do her thang and that is sing!!!
Sincerely,
Philip R. Leodoro

She looks great. He looks happy. Okay, Kelly. Go ahead and say it. “Daddy, you were right.”
Kelly Clarkson is the absolute best. Her voice is incredible and so are her lyrics. This album may not have sold as much as the label maybe wanted but it is an amazing album. It is very poignant and real. I am going to see her in LA and cannot wait!!!
Initially, I bought My December because Clive Davis didn’t like it — now it’s one of my favorite CDs. I actually prefer this grittier more emotional side of Kelly. She’s an amazing talent and I hope she continues to give us her music her way.
I was at the show and sat in front of Clive. As I left I told him to get Sober played on the radio as it needs to be heard. He just smiled and squeezed my arm. She was in amazing form all three nights and has never sounded better.
