Kelly Clarkson and Clive Davis: Is the Feud Over?

Clivekelly_lAt the Kelly Clarkson concert I attended earlier this week at New York’s Beacon Theater, the rumor was that Clive Davis was also in attendance. Well, judging from this post-show photo, it looks like it wasn’t just a rumor. The reunion marks a happier chapter for the pop star and her label chairman, who battled over the content of Clarkson’s latest record, My December. Clarkson wanted to release an album full of self-penned material, while Davis didn’t feel there were enough hits among her new compositions. (Unfortunately, it seems like Davis was right, as December has sold fewer than 700,000 copies, compared to almost 6 million for Clarkson’s last CD, Breakaway.) But if Kelly’s at all upset about the low numbers, you wouldn’t have known it from her performance, which was confident, vulnerable, and even moving. At one point, Clarkson had to wipe a few tears from her eyes after the crowd’s ultra-enthusiastic response to her smash hit "Because of You." The fans even loved the tracks she sang from December, particularly the Sarah McLachlan-esque "Sober." And although the Beacon’s roughly 3,000-person capacity is way less than the stadiums Kelly was originally going to play on this tour, I think her more personal songs played better in a more intimate venue. Though Kelly’s not breaking any CD sales records these days, anyone lucky enough to see her on this tour will not be disappointed.

I’d take artistic integrity over sales any day.

i love kelly, and i think it’s too bad more people didnt give ‘my december’ a chance. I was at the beacon theater concert on sunday, and was it just my terrible nosebleed seats or did that place have really bad acoustics. ALSO the people who sat behind me were the most obnoxious ever, when kelly sang, In my opinion her best number of the night, “up to the mountain” a patty griffin cover, they shouted “play the hits, kelly” that basically ruined an otherwise great concert, i wanted to hurt those two very badly…

AHHH that concert was so amazing. We definitely were a louder crowd knowing Clive was in the audience!!!

Davis WAS NOT right-he made himself right. RCA has not supported this album. Insiders at radio have confirmed this. Although “My December” has at least 5 Top 10 songs, he wants Kelly to fail to prove a point. All he needed to do was say her album was the greatest thing since sliced bread and we would not be having this conversation.
Unbeknownst to the general public, Kelly Clarkson is an amazing 4x award-winning songwriter. There are only a handful of Clarkson tunes that have NOT been penned by the singer since her career started. Because of You, Behind These Hazel Eyes, Walk Away, Miss Independent & many more, were all written by Kelly Clarkson! Why wouldn’t she want to write? She relented and let RCA pick the producer of her album, yet Clive and his enormous ego felt it necessary to malign her new project at every turn. If left to Clive Davis people would have NEVER heard “Because of You”… He hated that song it. Smart. It’s been a hit 2x in the USA.Clive was wrong.

kelly clarkson did not write ‘miss independent’. i forget who wrote it but i do know that the song was originally intended for christina aguilera or someone else

Kelly wrote the bridge on Miss Independent. It was not complete when it was given to her to finish by Rhett Lawrence. The writers on Miss Independent were Rhett Lawrence, Christina Aguilera and Kelly Clarkson.

Glad to hear the concert was awesome. As soon as I listened to the album I knew that the smaller venues thing would work better – the songs are just so personal and intimate. Can’t wait to see her here in LA!

I was at the show and she was brilliant. The crowd loved her, especially “Chivas,” “Sober,” “Because of You,” and the amazing mash-up of “Miss Independent” and “Back in Black” by AC/DC. SO ARENA ROCK. SO AMAZING.
    Go Kell!

I personally don’t care who’s feuding with who over whatever.
This gal can sing and is worth seeing for the sheer near-perfect talent.

I say this because nobody’s perfect.
Nobody. But she’s pretty dang close.

Kelly Clarkson looks very nice in this pic. At first I did not like her, but she won me over with “Break Away”. I really like “Because Of You”. I can really hear the hearbreak in her voice. It’s nice to know the concert was good. Charlie: I know just what you mean: I went to the DEF LEPPARD/FOREIGNER/STYX concert in Marysville recently, and had a jerk in the same row I was sitting in. UGH!

700,000 to date?? that is considered a FLOP. she sold 6,000,000 of breakaway……….this new cd was meant for her hardcore fans not to win over new ones. The cd has fallen off the charts. I hope she does well with the next one

    ROCK ON!!! kelly!
ps, Breakaway sold 6 mil in 3 YEARS. My December has only been out for 4 MONTHS.
kelly, keep up you’re AWESOME JOB!!!
and in regard to the review, uh, there WAS no feud in the first place, if y’all pay attn to what both sides REALLY said. glad the media is cleaning up it’s own, um, doo doo. thx.

I have tix to her concert in San Jose in November. It will be my 3rd time seeing her in concert. Why do I pay again and again to hear her? Because she is the best pop performer of her generation. Period. Who cares if the record flopped? She’s only released one single off of it for real. If she releases “How I Feel” or “Yeah” she could totally rack up the numbers. Even if she doesn’t, the album’s great. And she has plenty ‘o money; she won’t stop singing because of it. As long as she keeps making records that I like, I’m happy. And as far as I’m concerned, she’s still doing it :)

People put way too much emphasis on CD sales. If an album doesn’t go platinum in a week, then it’s considered a flop. I can’t particularly like the direction her music as taken, but her songs are so intensely personal. It’s brave of her to put herself out there like that. I’m glad she stood up for herself. Bravo, Kelly.
