Been there, 'Dune' that

There’s a rumor floating around the intarwubs that Paramount is thinking about taking another stab at adapting Frank Herbert’s seminal sci-fi novel Dune. Read the full post.

I just read Ender’s Game for the first time over the summer and loved it, so I’m with you. But the problem is, there’s no way you could reasonably film a bunch of 8-year-old kids talking like geniuses and doing everything else they do in the novel and make it seem serious. You’d have to make the kids older, and then all the fans of the books would whine, etc….if it worked though, it’d be brilliant.

HOW are they going to make “A Song of Fire and Ice” a movie–maybe a 6 year, 22 episode TV program but a movie? There are at least 8 different points of view going on (just in the FIRST book) and none of them are simple and straightforward. One of the strengths of this series is that you never know who is going to stay good or bad and who will or won’t change, die, or disappear. And the female storylines are just (if not more) interesting than the male so focusing on male lead characters would be unfortunate. What is going to be lost in the shuffle will probably be monumental! I LOVE these books but yikes–what an undertaking!

This news (rumor?) has me incredibly excited. Marc’s right, neither of the previous Dune adaptations were good enough. Lynch had iconic moments and some really interesting decisions, but strayed too far from the novel. The SciFi miniseries was truer to source, but the soundstages and shoddy effects were just laughable. The Children of Dune follow-up, however, was wonderful. Even if this is just a rumor, maybe all the fan-buzz will convince Paramount to go forward with it. Anybody have any dream casting ideas?

I’ve absolutely no familiarity with the novel that this rumoured flick is based on. So, coming to this cold (not to mention Canadian), all I can say is “eh.”

OSC is working on an Ender’s Game movie which would also have elements from Ender’s Shadow in it as well. From his website, they’ve gone through about 3-4 different writer’s at least for it and Wolfgang Peterson was going to direct, but isn’t anymore. OSC has said “No” to lots of stuff in order to try and make the movie he thinks will work out best. Check out his website at http://www.hatrack.com

I only read the Dune series because of the miniseries, which I quite liked, despite its flaws, and I have grave doubts as if it could be done better, at least, in film form. The story needs time to be told, and that’s difficult to provide on the big screen.

I would love to see ERB’s John Carter of Mars on the big screen. Also Heinlein’s Friday would make an interesting movie. Agree that a true-to-the-book version of Starship Troopers would also make a great movie. As for remaking Dune, I think the 2 extremes are covered. You have the one-sitting Lynch version (while seeing some of the battles using current sfx would be cool, not worth a whole ‘nother movie though imho) more geared to the action audience and the longer mini-series which covers the story well.

To Lilac: Song of Ice and Fire couldnt be done any way but an HBO series, it would be impossible. Howeer, its worth the effort because the first 3 books in that series are fantasy’s crowning achievement, better then Lord of the Rings, yep I said it.

    1. Ender’s Game
    2. The Stars My Destination
    3. Forever War

I’d love to see a mini-series made out of Simmons’ “Hyperion” and a movie out of Vinge’s “A Fire Upon the Deep”.

Rather than “Stranger in a Strange Land”, how about Heinlein’s other seminal work, “Time Enough for Love”? It could even be a 2 or 3 pic deal like LOTR, beginning with “Methusaleh’s Children” to introduce the character of Lazarus Long and the Howard families. And with all of the CGI technology out there, I’d love to see David Brin’s “Startide Rising” brought to the screen. Its time for something original out of Hollywood, instead of the same stuff rehased over and over.

I loves me some Lynch “Dune” – for the pure cheese factor. I’ve read the book and realize that the film doesn’t do it justice… but how can you not love the line “Bring in the floating fat man”!
“Ender’s Game” is a great book, but I just don’t see it working if made in Hollywood. Too sanitized, too crowd-pleasing. Perhaps if they brought it to life in a violent, R-rated CGI-form it could get a proper adaptation.

I like Lynch’s Dune also, but when Linda Hunt gravely intones “I am the House Keeper” it veers into ShowGirls territory…
I vote for Robert J. Sawyer’s MINDSCAN. Great premise – we figure out how to upload our consciousness into indestructible bodies that do not age. Plus coutroom drama, and a retirement colony on the moon! Great book.
Also liked his Neanderthal Parallax trilogy (Hominds, Humans, and Hybrids) — but with the sitcom Cavemen still airing, it’s too soon, too soon…

Internment that does not result in everyone being dead 48 hours later is obviously the province of government, with the massive infrastructural demands it makes of those who would implement it. ,
