Why you should stick with 'Heroes'

Categories: Heroes

Heroes_lFor the past three weeks, I’ve been having a serious internal debate: will I, or won’t I continue to watch Heroes on Monday nights? The cons started to pile up as each week passed — lovesick Hiro again?, that awful promo two weeks ago featuring "the box," boredom with the Dominican twins, frustration with Claire’s flyboy,West, and their budding romance — but I’ve decided to stick with it and you should too. Theshow has offered up some tantalizing incentives to keep tuning in eachweek. The murder of Kaito Nakamura, Isaac’s painting of a Godfather-style executed Noah (the daddy formerly known as HRG), Kensei’s healing power, and my favorite tidbit: Angela Petrelli’schilling/silent command for Parkman to get out of her head during herinterrogation. Aside from these delicious plot points, I’m hopelessly devoted to my favorite Heroes: Nathan (Adrian Pasdar, pictured), whose storylinewill hopefully expand soon, and Claire, whose search for identity as an adpotee and hero is irresistible.

So, folks, that’s why I’m leaving my Monday nights open, atleast until the end of "Volume 2: Generations." Yes, it’s been alittle slow and disjointed, and yes, some of our beloved characters arein painfully dull situations, but c’mon people! Who doesn’t love a goodold-fashioned murder-mystery, especially one that promises to revealmore dirt on the older generation of heroes and the sinister Company?

What are your likes and gripes withVolume 2 so far? Will you stand by your show or jump ship? Who are you favorite Heroes? Defend your ideas below, and if you’ve a yen for more Heroes, helpbuild our wiki, EW’s Ultimate Heroes Fan Guide. OVERRATED

I think that we should all recall that Heroes started out a little slow and disjointed last season too, but sticking with it proved to be well worth it. Besides, an off night on Heroes is still superior to most other shows on.

Hey Nathan, Jack from “Lost” and Ron Burgundy called, they want their “I don’t give a damn about life” beard back.
I also feel like the second season has started off slowly, but I haven’t considered dumping the show. I compare it to the way that Season 3 of “Lost” started off slowly, and a lot of the main characters were separated from each other and we were being introduced to new ones. Later, “Lost” finished year 3 unbelievably strong, and while “Heroes” isn’t quite as good, I think they’ll turn this thing around.
That being said, most of the new characters this season are BORING. The Dominican (or Honduran or whatever they are) twins are dull, and the Irish gang Peter’s hanging with is worse! I like that Claire has a love interest, but it’d be nice if it wasn’t such an annoying smug guy before his random charming “Superman” moment.
I love the Bennetts, Mr. Muggles, and a lot of the regular cast though I hope they find a way to not kill off Jack Coleman, the best actor on the show

By the way, I REALLY didn’t want to be THAT GUY (the one who inevitably compares “Heroes” to “Lost”), but I felt it was mostly favorable and apt in this case.

I have to say I have never watched the show, but your post has made me decide to take a look. Thanks!

A show with so many characters and stories to tell invariably requires a lot of build-up, it can’t be expected to jump right into the middle of the action instantly. We’re only 3 episodes in, give it time!

  • Todd

I’m so sick of these a-holes who gripe when a show doesn’t give them instant and constant gratification. A show like The Wire wouldn’t exist if these people had their way.

  • Jim

my problem with the show isn’t the lack of “instant gratification,” it’s the lack of any real depth to the characters and plot. it could be that i’m still angry about last season’s let down finale, but if the writers knew people were disappointed with it, don’t you think they would have gotten their act together for the beginning of this season?

You betcha I’m sticking with it, though I must admit the Wonder Twins are really starting to grate. They’ve done the EXACT SAME THING for 3 episodes in a row now (run, kill people, run, repeat…) and I can think of a lot of other characters I’d rather be spending my time with (namely, Nathan – for the hunk factor – and his mama to learn more about the first generation). But if they really kill off HRG I will be seriously irked!! Jack Coleman is one of the very best things about this awesome show.

As of tonight, I’m recording but not watching until I hear comments like “Man what an awesome episode,” “It’s finally back,” or “At least it didn’t s**k tonight.” Other than Claire cutting her toe off and Sark having her power (which is lame power repition, though cool he had it), this season has bored me. Last week I discussed family finances while watching and still didn’t miss anything in terms of plot progression or enjoyment. Yes, it’s been that bad.

Am I the only one completely charmed by Claire’s friend West? I love him..he oozes charm. And okay, I’ll admit it, I actually swooned when he said “Claire, shut up” and flew her into the air. I do wish the Peter storyline would pick up though..get him back where he belongs..with original characters!

  • Carli

The only reason I am still watching is so I won’t be lost when Kristen Bell finally comes on.

  • Matthew

    I definitley agree with Carli.
Out of all the sophomore shows coming back this season, I thought at least Heroes wouldn’t dissapoint. But honestly it really has in so many ways possible. Is it bad that I take bathroom breaks whenever the Hiro love triangle storyline comes on? I’d say so.

  • TuMadre

I don’t care what the ADD people below say, I am watching this show on monday nights. I can’t believe everyone wants this show to move as quickly as CSI or any other show, they don’t quite get the concept of a mini-series that spans an entire season.. not each episode is a new open and close case solved.. what’s this, the Superfriends??!?
This show rocks and it’s moving just fine as far as I’m concerned.

  • LostHero

Let’s be honest, the Honduran Wonder twins are the Nikki and Paulo of Heroes. There new foreign, and we’re already trying to be convinced that they have been connected to the other heroes all along. e.g. Claire’s stolen car. With any luck we’ll see all this excitement culminate midseason with a Honduran Wonder Twins centered episode, which results in their deaths.

  • BrandonK

I’m a pretty loyal viewer, once I start watching something. Every year I tell myself I’m not going to watch American Idol, and I end up watching it. So yes, I’ll keep watching Heroes. I really love superpowers! LOL

    ZZZZZZZzzzzzz

  • mage?!

I gave up on Heroes when it ended so lamely last season. Put on some tights and capes and maybe we can talk.

  • Jay

    Absolutely terrible.

  • mGoode

I probably won’t give up on it for a while. I have stuck it out longer on other shows that ended up going bad. I stuck with the X-Files until the begining of the last season, and it was just bad towards the end. It’ll take more than a few slow eps to keep me away.

  • C C

I’m not a Heroes fan, but I know that Bryan Fuller, the creator of colorful newbie Pushing Daisies, was a producer and writer on Heroes last season. Someone on another board suggested that Fuller was “the glue” that held Heroes together last season, and it is suffering creatively in his absence.

  • Ellipsian

Why should you stick with “Heroes”? Two words: Kristen Bell. Here’s hoping that she’s the mysterious, hoodie-d hero-slayer and can get this molasses-slow show MOVING already.

  • Kevin Smith

Heroes is lame and boring. Except for the one that I am going to direct. Otherwise, it’s just a rip-off of Lost, X_Men, Watchmen, and 4400.

  • Tom Strong

Heroes is done. Very very dull.

  • jay

the show is a bit dull now…i really wish they could find a nice balance of them using their powers and developing a storyline. the magic of the first half of the first season was learning about their powers with them. i’ll still watch though, hopeuflly it will get better

  • kelley

SO disappointed in the second season! The teenage romance is horrendous, so bad, it was hard to watch. Heroes was the ONLY show we watched with any anticipation, and now, we may be swayed to no longer watch it. Disappointing! LAME Peter P. story, LAMER Sylar plot. And get over the BoogeyMan already. What happened after Peter blew? How about finishing what you started???

  • ME

I’d hate to compare this show to Lost but I feel I have to. I only have room for one network science fiction show this tv season and based on what I’ve seen of Heroes last spring and now, Lost is it. Lost can be dull and uneven but when it’s good (season 3 finale, anyone? The pilot?), it’s really good. Acting, writing, directing – it can be fantastic on all levels. On Heroes, even when the writing is good, the acting can still be mediocre. Even Hiro cannot save this for me. I’m so done with Heroes – sorry.

  • Brad

I really don’t know what people are talking about or maybe I’m weird.
But I’m enjoying this season just as much as last year. True it hasn’t matched some of the greater Season 1 Heroes episode but I think they’re still great.
And the twins aren’t bothering me too bad. I’m pretty neutral about them.

  • Nance

I love all these characters, and I’m totally wrapped up in there trials. Maybe you should be watching online with the much shorter interruptions, as I have.

  • Anonymous

Unfortunately I’m so done with Heroes- last episode was my last. It has become so dull and boring, with terrible acting and even worse CG (flying scene anyone?) I cant take it anymore. The Nikki/Paulo incest twins as I call them have the SAME plot every episode, run, almost get caught, she almost kills someone, he saves them, more running. And it always seems like they’re about to make out!
Agh and West is the worst character on a television show I’ve seen in a long, long time. Add to that terrible, terrible Irish accents, and Hiro plot that has absolutely nothing to do with anything else and I’m out! Peace Heroes!
