Im – Good list but I’d add Jean Stapleton to the Caroll O’Connor, and Bea Arthur and Rue McClanahan to Betty White. Others: Alan Alda, Larry Hagman, Tom Selleck, Susan Lucci, Ellen DeGeneres, Candice Bergen, Sally Field, Calista Flockhart, Kirstie Alley, Valerie Bertinelli, the entire voice cast of the Simpsons and Tracy Ullman.
His appearance was unfunny, forced, and a rehash of what made him famous a looong time ago. It was very polite of Seth and Amy to appear like they were amused by that crap.
I thought it was great to see Chevy back on SNL. I have watched the show since it premiered and it brought back a lot of good memories. I can’t wait to see him on “Brothers & Sisters.” And I understand he is well-liked by his peers in Hollywood, not an SOB at all (I’m a minor actress in LA).
TV Icons for me: Lucille Ball, Jack Benny, Ed Sullivan, The Brady Bunch, Mary Tyler Moore, Carrol O’Connor and the whole Bunker family, Bea Arthur, Larry Hagman, Bill Cosby, the original SNL cast, “Sam and Diane” from Cheers,
the Friends cast, the Seinfeld cast, Johnny Carson, David Letterman, and Oprah. Whew! This proves that I am old and I watch too much TV.
Yeah, anyone that has read the book “Live From New York” will agree that Chevy Chase is a greedy bigot who is lucky to have had such a long carer despite being a complete a-hole in real life.
Monty Hall, Charles Nelson Riley, Larry Hagman, MTM
As someone who was a preteen in the 70′s and grew up in the 80′s, Bill Cosby is the ultimate TV Icon. Every Saturday with ‘Fat Albert’ and then the Cosby Show in the 80′s. And let’s not forget those omnipresent Jello Pudding commercials! HEY HEY HEY!
My boyfriend and I openly cringed during that segment on SNL (which must have been taped….interesting that there was no interaction with Seth and Amy, who must have been psyched that his crappy segment made their jokes seem funnier). And now he’s joining Brothers & Sisters? My favorite show? Great. Guess I can cross that off my list. Bad news. Can’t they get anybody better? Burt Reynolds even.
I have probably missed 2 SNL episodes over the past 25 years. Does anyone remember the episode in the mid-90s where Chevy Chase hosted and was obviously drunk? That about sums up his professionalism and aptitude. I think Bill Murray put it best when he told Chevy Chase (before a fistfight) that he had medium talent. Chase was very lucky to achieve his success when most of the country was waiting in gas lines or high. Chase sucked on Saturday and will continue to do so if he is not stopped.
Bob Newhart, Mary Tyler Moore, Gilda Radner, Gracie Allen, Dick Van Dyke….truly icons!
chevy was awful on snl last week. i just didn’t get it. i don’t think he did either.
He was great on SVU? Are you kidding? He was awful!!
Google the comments made after Gerald Ford died, and come back and tell me what an icon this guy is. He was A-List from the first year of SNL through Fletch, and since then it has been all downhill…his SNL performances have the all the riveting, must-watch character of an automobile accident.
I love it. Chevy is one of the top TV Icons and forever will be. His bit on “Update” last week was brilliant. Again, this is a case of intelligence. His brand of humor is what the original SNL was all about-SMART humor. If you didn’t get it, it is because you are not smart enough to get it. SNL is simply too smart for today’s audiences…..why should Chevy or SNL make their humor more ignorant? Its not their fault you are not smart enough or educated enough to get the jokes!
Chevy Chase is the most unfunny of the famous SNL alumni (anyone remember his horrid attempt at late-night). I’m sitting here trying to think of another well-known SNL’er who “ranks” as bad and I can’t think of any. Dana Carvey’s movie stunk but he was funny on SNL. Naming Chase an “icon” is ludicrous. If he is one, so is David Hasselhoff or the woman that played Julie on the “Love Boat”.
Ok, glad it’s not just me. I was excited to see Chevy Chase’s guest spot on SNL but also found it painful to watch. Did he misspoke when he said “…back to you Fred” instead of Seth? Did I miss something?
