Snap judgment: New singles from Natasha Bedingfield, Kelly Sweet

There’s no better cure for a mid-afternoon bout ofwriter’s block than listening to Natasha Bedingfield’s ubiquitous hit "Unwritten."Seriously, when the gospel chorus explodes into the refrain — "Staring! At the blank page before you! Open up the dirty window!" — I never knowwhether to stand up and sway, or stay in my seat and type frantically. However, her new duet with Sean Kingston, "Love Like This," leaves me feeling, well, absolutely nothing. It’s as if two people who I’m not entirely convincedcan sing got together and recorded a heavily focus-grouped song, then ran theirvocals through a giant computer. As for the late-in-the-game command to"rock side to side, one finger in the air"? I most certainly willnot.

On the flip side, Kelly Sweet’s new single, an Enya-fiedtake on Aerosmith’s "Dream On," doesn’t sound very promising onpaper, but it’s actually a soothing little musical treat. Press play on theembedded YouTube clip (I don’t think it’s the official video, unless Sweetpurposely wanted to mouth the words to some other tune while the vocals to"Dream On" started playing) and find yourself transported to a landof pink hearts, yellow moons, orange stars, and AC hits. The share your thoughtson both singles with your fellow PopWatch readers!

I’m really disappointed with Natasha’s new album. ‘i wanna have your babies’ was cute, but that’s about it. the rest just lacks any of the excitement the first album contained. what she needs to do is put out an album of remakes, since she never misses when she visits BBC’s Live Lounge. Just check out her renditions of ‘chasing cars’, ‘somewhere only we know’, ‘the scientist’ and ‘ray of light’

Eh. Natasha can certainly sing, but Sean Kingston cannot. He was on some crappy reality show, maybe whatever that show was where the puppeteer won? And he was a mess. Lip-synched to the recording playing, and every so often yelled something out, which sounded awful. This song is pretty boring. (And doesn’t really DO anything with Kingston. It would actually be better without him.)

This is the official kelly sweet video it’s just that the video and the audio aren’t synched up, the video’s about a second too fast.

Even though the first song gives off a “Disney-channel-filler” vibe, I’m sure it will be a great success for Natasha. Why, you may ask? Because they’ve used the #1-sell-out tactic: The robot voice. Think about it, Phil Collins, Cher, Linkin Park, Britney, Faith Hill – all made huge singles out of the Robot Voice.
In total randomness, has anyone read that Sting was just named worst lyricist? Are they kidding? Have they heard Avril’s “When You’re Gone?”

I concur with Michael, Natasha’s “LOVE LIKE THIS” with Sean Kingston doesn’t do a damn thing for me. Its just kinda EHH, but then again, so is her entire “N.B.” cd which was released over in the U.K. this past June, but isn’t getting a U.S. release until Dec. 18th, JUST IN TIME FOR X-MAS! Its hardly a gift I’d want any of my friends to give me. Even the track with Eve, “(No More)What Ifs” sounds forced & kinda blah. Although I’ve heard that Natasha recorded a 2nd track with Kingston called “POCKET FULL OF SUNSHINE” which is a much better song. Will that track be on the U.S. version come Dec.? Who knows if “Love Like this” never takes off…

Do new singles Natasha Bedingfield and Kelly Sweet even matter when we’re mere hours away from the new Radiohead album?

    Ouch, Phil!!! ;-)
I don’t think Sean Kingston adds any value on this song. He’s there because he’s the “it” boy right now (see Fergie’s remix of “Personal” on iTunes) and she needs another hit to keep the momentum going in the U.S. that her brother lost. I actually like a few of the tracks on N.B. — “Soulmate” is simply fantastic, “Say It Again” and “Not Givin’ Up” have great hooks, and “Pirate Bones” and “Tricky Angel” capture that quirkiness that made us pay attention to her in the first place.

Yeah I just aught that about Sting. Popwatch will probably have something about it. They recently had a post about the best songwriter a few weeks back. To the first song, it sucks. Hopefully it’s the first nail in Kingston’s career coffin
