What's for lunch? Britney or tacos?

Chipotle_lOn Friday, I wrote a blog post about Britney Spears’ jank new video for "Gimme More," and your message-board comments sent a clear, concise message: You’d rather talk about food. And that’s why today, even though several alleged tracks off Britney’s forthcoming Blackout CD have been leaked onto the Internet, I’m choosing not to discuss them. Instead, I’m posting a photo of the three "carnitas" soft tacos I just picked up on a trip to Chipotle with PopWatch diva Annie Barrett, and asking all of you to post about your lunches, too. Better still, if you’ve got a camera (or cameraphone), snap a pic of your lunch and email it to PopWatch@ew.com, and I’ll see if I can figure out how to display ‘em, flickr-style, sometime in the next 48 hours.

Oh, and just to ensure my editor doesn’t accuse me of writing something without a shred of pop-cultural connection, I’ve rewritten the words to Foreigner’s 1984 hit, "I Want to Know What Love Is" (embedded below), with an eye on afternoon (culinary) delights. Or, if you must, you can click here to hear a certain pop diva’s alleged new tracks, and converse about that.

I Want to Know What Lunch Is
Gonna take a little walk
A little walk to quench my hunger
Lunch has been delayed too long
And now my stomach sounds like thunder

Ooooooohhhhhhh.

Now most lunches leave me cold
How can a sandwich cost ten dollars?
But I’m too lazy to make my own
It all makes me want to holler

On the menu, there’s pasta and soup
Can Chinese break this blah lunchtime loop?
Can’t get a burger, ’cause I’m tempted by fries
And I crave supersize

I wanna know what lunch is!
I want you to show me!
I want to see what lunch is!
Take pictures and show me!

Mmmmm, Chipotle. I already had lunch (Stouffer’s baked chicken & mashed potatoes), but now I’m craving a carnitas fajita-style burrito. Darn you, Slezak! And maybe you should lay off all those Diet Cokes? That can’t be good for you!

  • Ellipsian

Seriously, it’s all about Chipotle’s barbacoa. I’m completely smitten. And their guac gives me the happies, too.
Truth be told, Slezak, the most exciting thing about this post (and that’s a compliment when said post includes a Chipotle reference…mmmm…) is to see your desk, where presumably much of your PopWatch magic happens… =)

I love how EW makes everything on tv and in pop culture more enjoyable – now you’re turning your attentions to lunch! Mine was strawberries & cream oatmeal, Diet Code Red (but just one can unlike Slezak) and apple from a local orchird (love autumn in WI) and some hershey kisses from off of my co-workers desk.

  • Tamara

We really need a Chipotle here in Michigan, already. *cries*

  • Byron

I think you may drink more diet coke than I do if those bottles are from today and before lunch.

  • Ames

I see Slezac is still drinking regular Diet Coke. I have turned over completely to Coke Zero. Truly an addict. Though I can’t drink that much pop. 3 bottles on the desk and you still popped for another at Chipotle. Fuss up, you’re going back for a refill in an hour.

  • Snooks

Darn you Slezak, now I am hungry again! Your Chipoltle kicks my peanut butter sandwich’s butt! Meh. Maybe I’ll swing by Chipoltle on the way home..mmm..tacos…

  • BMA

Hmmm, someone needs to be a little more tuned in to pop culture — Ellen’s been showing pictures of her lunch and having people comment on her web site about it several times this season. Do I smell a lawsuit for copyright infringement? Or someone’s carnitas?

  • Tina

Oh please, Slezak. You don’t wanna talk about Brit’s new songs b/c they are actually very good. If it was one of your pets i.e. Fergie or Beyonce you’d be promoting the leaked records like you were on their payroll. No matter her singles and album are headed to the top anyway. Eat that for lunch baby:-)

    Tamara -
there is a Chipotle on Washtenaw in Ann Arbor, just opened in July. Yum!

I just got my wisdom teeth out on Thursday, so no solid foods for me. And the only thing more depressing than that is having to come back to work after 4 days of vicodin vacay on a NATIONAL HOLIDAY. blah. Can’t wait until I’m numb to work and eating tacos again.

  • Gretchen Weiners

Too bad it’s a holiday and I’m not at work. I would have sent you a pic of my tuna sandwich. Diet Coke much, Mike?

  • tara

My Coke Rewords program sucks !!

  • whoohoo

Slezak, you slay me. I’m going out to dinner tonight, so no lunch for me.

Greetings from Vegas, where my entire state doesn’t celebrate Columbus Day–instead we have “Nevada Day” on the last Friday of October to celebrate the state joining the union–point being, I’m at work, where I enjoyed my corned beef and rye and Propel in front of the computer. Btw, for those in Southern Nevada, Utah or Arizona, a little place called Cafe Rio beats the snot out of Chipolte every day and twice on Sundays.
On another point, what was the consensus on fruit as a dessert?

  • daisyj

I wish I had seen this one before I ate my lunch– I don’t think I can take a very good picture of it now. The tuna sandwich was pleasant but uneventful, but the big news was the green tea-coconut bun one of my coworkers brought me today. Buttery!
(And can I just say, I love the international workplace?)

  • daisyj

Oh, and here in California it’s Indigenous Peoples’ Day, and we don’t get it off. At least, I don’t. Maybe indigenous peoples do.

  • Cranky

    Lookin’ for lunch
    In all the wrong places
    Lookin’ for lunch
    In too many places
Qdoba is cool but the line is too long
Guess I’ll have to write a Mickey D song
    Yeah
    Looking for luuuuuunch…

  • Vivi

I’m sorry. All I saw was the Chioptle on your desk and I was in heaven. What was this blog about again?

  • nunya

i JUST had the exact same 3 mini taco Chipotle lunch yesterday, and it was ok. it was my first time eating there, and i may go again.

  • donner

Slezak, you are one of my all-time faves (I didn’t like that you were on vacation AGAIN the other day) and I love that you wanna talk food instead of that no-talent slag…thank you for taking the more interesting fork in the road…mmmm….forks…

I FINALLY found the WAHOO’s on Wilshire! It’s a bit of a hike from my office, but well worth it. Spicey Fish Kid’s Bowl with Black Beans and One Spicey Fish Taco ala carte does it for me everytime!

  • Dio_K

    Nice typewriter.

  • snarky

I had a protein bar for lunch. GAH. Had steak for dinner tho. I love this discussion!

  • Kelly

I had Chipotle on Sunday… it was amazing!
    And GREAT song lyrics, Slezak!

  • Stephanie T.

Michael, Manhattan clearly has the good food. Chineese/Mexican food is just not the same.
Now for some odd reason, I have the “Mystery Meat song” in my head. Hey. Does anyone remember that short lived Canadian sketch show that Nickelodeon used to air called “Welcome Freshman”? In one of the sketchs Merv, got his friends to form a band and they sang a song called “Mystery Meat”. “Salami, Baloney, Pigs Feat. It could be anyone of those mystery meats, yeah it could be anyone of those mystery meats.”

I’m a high school teacher in NC. When I’m not on cafeteria duty preventing fist fights I stick with a turkey and cheese on rye, an apple and a vanilla snack pack. That’s about all you can pack in to a 20 minute lunch before diving into Jane Austen.

  • jess

you are too funny! i had a veggie delite from subway, go veg!

  • Martha

Mmm, soft tacos. My lunch today wasn’t half as interesting/tasty. I like the lyrics and video, but I don’t understand why Lou Gramm looks so pained singing about lunch choices. Surely it’s not that difficult?

  • kats

A chicken caesar salad which was awesome and cost $9.50. Luckily, my boss usually pays for lunch.
Hey Michael ~ what was the outcome of the fruit for dessert discussion???
