I just had a freak-out trying to choose which one man to vote as my Ultimate Male Hottie of the ’70s and ’80s. Read the full post.

Your list does not have Cillian Murphy in the 90-00s, or David Bowie in the 80s (Could those Labyrinth pants have BEEN any tighter?). Therefore, your list is stupid.

kats: You never cease to amaze me! I feel the EXACT SAME WAY about Tom Cruise. He was my ultimate man back in the ’80s (Top Gun and Cocktail were the epitome of his hotness), but now he totally turns my stomach with his Scientology BS and 14-year-old bride. Could his head BE any bigger? Ewwwwwwww! Of course, nowadays, it’s all Orlando, right? BRING ORLANDO TO BROADWAY!!!!!

While I found Matt Dillon and Michael Hutchence vaguely attractive in the 80s, most of those guys ranked from bland (Harrison Ford, Bruce Willis) to stomach-churningly ugly (Erik Estrada, Tom Selleck). Where’s Johnny Depp or someone who was actually attractive?

Seriously Mandi, you had a “freak out” trying to choose a guy? Oh you poor thing. Maybe you should get some perspective.

Hi Sarah! Long time, no see! We’re definitely beyond in synch on the Tom Cruise thing. Back in the day of “Risky Business” and “Top Gun” I was all about him, but now he turns my stomach. Ugh! I’m thinking poor brainwashed Katie must still see Maverick from her 14 year old eyes when she looks at him. As for today, absolutely Orlando! Bring Orlando to Broadway! And maybe while we’re down for the show we could pass by Brad Pitt too….

Robert Redford has been my ultimate any-era hottie since I was 10, and nothing’s going to change that. Intelligent, outspoken, gorgeous! Thanks for sharing that clip.

So I vote for the Ultimate Male Hottie of the 70s and 80s and then I realize… no Warren Beatty? The Official Thinking Person’s Male Celebrity Crush* of the Late Seventies/Early Eighties? Already peeved, I go to the male 1990-2007 and found… no David Duchovny? The OTPMCC of the Mid-to-Late Nineties? Not to mention your omissions of John Malkovich, Colin Firth (hotter in Valmont than P&P, IMHO), and Hugh Laurie (okay, a more unconventional choice, but he is the OTPMCC of the current era–don’t believe me? Ask Salon.). Add to that your omission of Keira Knightly on the female side and seriously.
Then, of course, the question. Was Rob Lowe hotter in the 80s or the late 90s?

  • Sarah

kats, how I’ve missed posting with you! Seriously, I wish Tom Cruise would just board one of those spacecrafts they all worship and do poor Katie a favor. No one deserves to be married to an egomaniac like that. Good for Nicole for ditching him. She’s got an Oscar and he NEVER will! Ha! Anywho, I’m totally with you on the Rob Lowe, Simon and John thing. They only improve with age! As does another one of my ’80s crushes Johnny Depp (drool!) This one might be pushing it, but DARN! Tim Daly looks HOT on Private Practice. Did you happen to see Rick Springfield perform on General Hospital a while ago? He’s almost 60 and he STILL can rock like nobody’s business!

  • Linny

me: You best be gettin’ off my girlfriend Mandi’s case and lighten up! She’s too cool for you and she can totally freak out over ANYTHING she feels like. She is the BOMB! Boo-yah!

  • Galadriel

RE: ’90s to present list– WHERE IS ORLANDO BLOOM?!?! Who are the KNUCKLEHEADS who came up with this list? They put Russell Crowe on and omitted Orlando??? What is WRONG with you people?!

  • Pam

Tim Daly should’ve been on the ’90s to now list. He’s simply yummy on Private Practice. And he was tasty on Wings back in the day. Hey, Steve, any chance you’re related???

  • Martha

Friends, if you’re talking hotness in the 70s/80s, it is all about Harrison Ford. Yummy.

Sarah~ I was a little bit AWOL at the end of the summer, getting my daughter ready for first grade, two weddings and my little brother’s 30th birthday party. I’m so with you on the Johnny Depp thing! Another HOT pirate and he was always so delish on Jump Street. Tim Daly has his merits as well. I missed Rick Springfield on GH I have to admit. I only watch when Brenda’s in town :-)

  • Sarah

kats: I hear ya, the end of summer I was AWOL too-two boys home for the summer and my 1-year-old daughter keeping me a little too busy, if ya know what I mean! How’s your 1st grader doing? I have one too. Anyway, if you want to see Rick’s performance, go to http://youtube.com/watch?v=J815pny5DqA
I downloaded the song, it’s REALLY GOOD! (I can’t belive he’s approaching 60…it boggles the mind!) Duran Duran has a new album coming out, I see. Do you think they still make those awesome posters like the one I had hanging in my dorm room? (all dressed in white, bet you had that one too!)

  • kats

    Sarah~
She’s doing really well. Homework is an adjustment though. I can’t believe how much more is expected in grade school now then when I was a kid. How’s your son doing? I didn’t know you had a baby too! You must be so busy! My girls are 6 and 3 1/2 now. I feel like I never stop. Thanks for the link, I’ll have to check Rick out. I did have that DD poster, in fact I probably still do! I have a bunch dating from their earliest days to Seven and the Ragged Tiger with John in black leather pants ~ yum!
