The reality-TV winners you love to hate

Sigh. Somewhat predictably, Hung (pictured, with his mother) won the title of Top Chef two night ago. Read the full post.

The one I really ended up hating was Randal from season 4 of the Apprentice. He seemed very nice the whole season, then had a chance to do something classy (not to mention very business savvy) after winning and turned into a complete a-hole with his whole “it’s not the Apprenti” speech. It was certainly enough to make me think that was his real character, and the niceness had all been a put-on for the camera.
What about Kelly from season 2 of the Apprentice as the most forgettable reality show winner? The guy was as exciting as toast.

Freddy and Kendra on The Amazing Race, the xenophobic bickering models. Especially since the saintly, cultured models finished in second place.

Jenna Morasco from Survivor Marquesas. When the women were separated, she treated everyone who was not considered a “hot” young girl terribly (exceept Deena) and when the groups came together, she treated those not in her alliance badly. She was lazy. She did not play a good strategic game until picing Matthew over Rob to face her int he final 2. She cried and said she wanted to quit when things did not go her way. She won by luck in the last two challenges and because her competition in the #2 spot was less likable (the women thougt Matthew was creepy), generally rode coatails and was weak in the jury phase. As far as Brian from Thailand, he played a great strategic game and did not pull any crap like Jenna did. He may be sleazy in real life but the cast trusted him. And that season still had one of the most unlikeable and least strategic casts (other than Shii Ann) of all.

Hung is not a villain. He’s good at what he does and he is able to recognize that. When did that become villainous?

  • Kat

Wait a minute, I thought Howie was the villian.

to UCCF – why would Randal have to share his prize and make Trumps job easier. He obviously won, even though Rebecca was strong, she wasn’t the strongest. I mean Trump could have said the same thing to Bill (season 1)about Kwame, Kwame was strong also, just not the strongest…..
I vote for worst ever as ED & Danielle from BB this summer, neither of them deserved sequester, they were both truly awful people.

I’m sorry, but nothing any reality show contestant has done comes CLOSE to the sheer ugliness of Top Chef S2′s Ilan (who, gag, went on to win). His immaturity was appalling: taunting Marcel for being a virgin (repeatedly, and with no provocation), bashing Marcel’s dish in front of the guests (that stupid cherries comment). Oh, and of course, cackling with glee and taping while MARCEL WAS BEING BRUTALLY HELD DOWN. As annoying as Marcel was (he was), he did NOTHING to deserve this. And Ilan, the mastermind behind the whole ugly affair, got away with the title and $100,000. Sickening. Just SICKENING. All Hung haters should do well to look at Season 2. At least Hung was always a pro.

I agree with the previous posts about Ilan. I was horrified that that one note prat won. Sure I luuurve Spanish food, but the guy could cook nothing else. His attitude stunk (he was mean and an instigator) and his food seemed pedestrian. It surprised me to no end that he won, especially since the judges usually go on and on about diversity in cuisine as well as originality. It should have been Sam, Marcel or Elia. Horrified.
But they got it right with Hung. It’s not about likeability. Chefs need to be cocky and confident in what they present. They’re artists. Artists are cocky because they are baring themselves in the end product, and if they have no confidence in their skills, they shouldn’t be out there.
In summary, survivor shows = likeability, i.e., not getting booted off based on personality, not talent. The creative shows (i.e., Top Chef, PR, TD) = talent first then personality.

I’d vote for anyone who has ever won on Last Comic Standing – frankly, any one who has made it to the house. It seems like they look for the least funny people during the auditions – and they succeed every time. They pass up all the good ones, and I don’t understand why.

  • Ms Daisy

My first vote goes to Jeffrey Sebelia. Second vote goes to Ilan, but that vote would have gone to anybody that wasn’t Sam anyway. Third vote goes to Rob/Amber for Survivor all-stars (and any other reality show they show up for).

Biggest j-erk to ever win a reality show hands down this season’s Big Brother Winner: “Evil D!ck” Donato and his daughter cheating and abusing (w/CBS encouragement) their way to first and 2nd. Amazing Race had Zach and Flo (As in I wanna quit and go home several times whiner Flo) win back in their 3rd season. Survivor worst; Sandra Diaz Twin back in the Pearl Islands A real vom-itous result as well.

Rob and Amber, esp. since they didn’t go away after they won, they just kept getting show after show. More like an hour and 45 minutes than 15 minutes of fame.

Tiffany didn’t win Top Chef, Harold did.

    ILAN HALL

Sorry, I think they got it right. Hung was the Top Chef in this season. And I liked him (don’t get sucked in with the BlahvoTV editing — they could have made Mother Teresa look like satan).
