Remembering Lois Maxwell

Moneypenny_l Sure, Lois Maxwell had a 60-year career and acted in dozens of movies. But the Canadian-born actress, who died Saturday at 80, will best be remembered for one role that, though she played it in 14 movies, amounted to only a few moments of screen time. Maxwell played Miss Moneypenny from the first James Bond movie, 1962′s Dr. No (pictured) through A View to a Kill 23 years later, flirting fruitlessly with three 007s (including Sean Connery, pictured with Maxwell). I paid homage to Maxwell’s Moneypenny recently in EW.com’s Secretary’s Day gallery, noting that she was Bond’s most steadfast romantic foil over the decades. Alas, nothing ever came of the saucy banter between the spy and the secretary, but we still have all those sparkling double entendres, delivered unflappably and preserved forever.

Sad news! I always loved the Moneypenny-Bond repartee, even when Connery bowed out and the movies got sillier.
In “Casino Royale,” when Vesper first appears, she says, “I’m the money,” to which Bond answers, “and worth every penny.” My husband and I wondered if that was a little covert tribute…

The last name Maxwell was not her birth name! Ms. Moneypenny was born Lois Hooker, which she changed when she became an actress.
As Moneypenny for the first 14 movies and the 3 original Bond Actors (Connery, Lazenby, Moore), she’s one of only six actresses to star in multiple Bond movies. The others are Eunice Gayson (Sylvia Trench-2 movies), Maude Adams (different roles-2 movies), Dame Judi Dench (as M- 5 movies), Caroline Bliss and Samantha Bond (the two other Moneypennys 2 and 4 movies each).
This is as sad to hear about as the passing of Desmond Llewelyn a few years back ago. RIP to both these actors who added flair to my favorite movies of all time.

Thanks for remembering!! We just loved her interaction with “bond” she will be dearly missed.
Too bad the general media thought Britney had more media cred than someone who has acted for so long!
