Hi. My name is Abby and I am hopelessly devoted to David Boreanaz the show Bones. Ah, forget that. I’ve got nothing to be ashamed of. This show has given me two seasons of gruesome deaths, witty repartee, and stunningly well-played sexual tension. What more can you ask of a weekly TV indulgence? So you can see that I came to this third season with a closetful of expectations — and boy have they been met.
A skull slamming into the windshield of a speeding car was a nice "Hey, how ya doin’?'" kind of opener. It was quite the windy road from that overpass-tossed body part to a creepy government official and his bed-hopping wife to a cannibalistic freak with a diamond in his tooth to a secret society bent on…well, we’re not sure what yet. But along the way, we got reacquainted with Boreanaz’s FBI agent Seeley Booth and his merry band of squints, led by Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel, pictured, with Boreanaz). And at the end, we were left with a bigger, possibly dangerous, mystery to unravel for episodes to come.
I really wasn’t sure how they’d handle Hodgins and Angela’s whole thwarted-wedding thing from last season’s final, but it just played right into the couple’s sweet but wacky relationship. Of course Hodgins isn’t put off by the fact that Angela forgot that years ago she married a giant black sailor, who she’d just met, while drunk, on the island of Vatulolo during the feast of the shark god Dakuwaka. Of course he would spend an obscene amount of his rather vast wealth to find that person and finalize their divorce By the way, how cute is T.J. Thyne with his hair cut short? Not that I didn’t love his great mane of curly hair but when it’s short you really get to see what a handsome man he is — possible future leading man kind of handsome.
The writers did a great job confusing the source of the tensionbetween Booth and Brennan. Was it because the "iconic image" of the twoof them standing at the altar last year disturbed Brennan? Was itbecause Booth arrested her father last year, even though Temperancesaid she understood? Booth’s dogged attempts to ferret out what wasreally wrong and get Brennan to go back out into the field with himshowed just how intertwined they’d gotten. Some might say they had asymbiotic relationship. (Loved Brennan’s line: "You said that already. What is it, the word of the day?" when Booth pointed out their"symbiotic" relationship again.) It’s just as they say in the end. Thetwo of them are the center and as long as they hold ittogether, keeping their relationship somehow playful yet intense, theshow will continue to succeed.
The fact that Booth knew things still weren’t right between themeven when she did go back into the field with him was a testament totheir connection. He cares for her personally and was afraid he’d hurther. And he knew Zack’s absence alone wasn’t the reason for herdistance, it was the fact that he hadn’t stopped Zack from acceptingthe military’s request to join a mission.
Speaking of Zack, there was a total old-home-week sort of vibe tohis surprise return to the lab from Iraq. Naturally Zack’s inabilityto interact on such a warm fuzzy level for long had him immediatelyjumping into the case and kicking the more than qualified but sadly outof luck trial assistant Clark (Eugene Byrd) to the curb. It was so sadwhen Clark said he was nobody and just exited. Ouch. I’m lookingforward to finding out more about Zack’s time with the military andexactly why he was found to be "detrimental to a military teamapproach."
So, what do you think of the overarching storyline that looks likeit’ll be played out over the season? Anyone else wondering how Camillecan remain just good friends with Booth after their steamy past? Or whythe entire world isn’t watching this show?

I continue to love *Bones.* The cast has an all-around rapport that few shows on TV do, and though the plotlines are exaggerated, the show is always a blast. I guess I’m one of the few who watches *Bones* and ignores *House,* but I’ll take the Squints over that British grouse every time. I wish *Bones* had its own regular TV Watch!
Btw, you know what other new show totally deserves at least a Recap on Popwatch? “Reaper”! I loved its premiere episode. It was so funny and has a vibe that I think *Bones* watchers (not to mention former *Buffy* and *Angel* watchers) will really like. “Reaper” is my favorite new show of the year so far!
We need a TV watch on this show!
Love these mini-tv watches! It’s perfect for shows like Bones – which I love – but are a little too formalic to have a weekly review. Can we do these minies throughout the season?
Another great episode of Bones. Loved Booth. Him trying to get Brennan back into the field was hilarious. Looking forward to another great season!
You should vote on Boreanaz’s photos here if you can’t get enough of him!

Bones Mini-TV watch?!?! My dreams have come true!!! Well I won’t go that far, but please keep this up. I love this show! Watched it since the beginning.
Thank you! I swear, sometimes I feel like the only person religiously watching this show.
I was giddy last night waiting for the new season to start. I’m so happy Bones is back!
It’s about freakin time this show got some love!!! I’ve been a fan from day one and always wondered why there was never a TV Watch for it. Bones and House back to back is just a perfect night of television. I love watching Bones and Booth do there little dance. It just makes for a fun hour of TV!
I’m also a huge fan of the show. Like Frances mentioned, the Bones and House combo is great. Last night had two of the best series premiers I’ve seen.
Thank you, Abby! Bones is a great show that deserves attention from EW. It has such a great cast of characters and fabulous chemistry between Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz. Also, it certainly doesn’t hurt that there’s some good eye candy on this show.
I’ve never watched Bones until I stumbled upon the reruns this summer and found that I quite like the show. I’ll be watching from here on out!
It’s smart, it’s funny, it gets at your heart – I’ve watched every episode since the beginning and love 99% of it. Would like for Emily Deschanel to gain back some weight (why, oh why would they make her diet?), but really, that’s the only quibble.
Thanks, Abby! Tell the Powers That Be that we need a “Bones” TV Watch every week!
I can admit that I started watching Bones because of Angel (David B) and was hooked from the first episode of the first season. The whole cast is great. I’m still not crazy about the Camille character, though. I miss Brennan’s old boss.
Oh, and a note to the wardrobe department: Please stop dressing Booth in casual clothes! He looks HOT in his suit and tie!
Bones definetly deserves it’s own TV Watch that Abby is perfectly qualified to write. Loved last night’s premiere. Best one so far followed by House’s. Loved how they set up a nice mystery that will hopefully last all season. Hodgins was quite the cutie with the new hair and I almost cried when Zach came back. Very excited for the whole season.
This is the best show on TV. Abby, thank you for recognizing it! They deserve more good press!
Oh thank you Abby! Tell your bosses to give you a real TV Watch. You and Bones deserve one. What a great start to the season! I’m excited to see where the season heads. I’m glad Fox paired it with House but does that mean one of them will get the boot when American Idol returns? I really hate that.
I really like this show. The writing is actually intelligent but I didn’t know if I would because I’m a HUGE fan of the books Kathy Reichs writes from which this show is based. They rock!
CSI gets all the glory. I find this one far more interesting, funny and decidedly creepy. I thought it was explained that Brennan was put off by Booth not stopping Zack from going to Iraq. I also thought his explanation made perfect sense. Zack was returned for failure to intigrate into the army (ie won’t follow orders blindly)
Oh, thank you Abby ! I’ve been waiting for a TV Watch for this show for two years ! Let’s make this a weekly thing !!
Come on EW, give Bones the official TV Watch! I took a big leap of faith following Boreanaz after Angel. You always worry about that new role after having one for so long. I have NEVER been disappointed until I’m faced with the fact that the season is over. I loved Angela’s past of reckless abandon. “He was black and I think his named started with a B” and the sketch. Zach having that military issue is really bringing out the squints more than ever. Can’t wait until next week. Once again, REAL TV WATCH please!
I too, remember David Boreanaz from his stint as Angel during the glory days of Buffy. I wasn’t interested in ‘Bones’ at first, but a friend recommended it to me last year; I gave it a chance, and I am starting to get hooked. The cool thing about it as that it mixes suspense with humor very well, not unlike Buffy did in the early days. And as a ‘House’ fanatic I think it’s the perfect lead in show.
David Boreanaz Rocks! Thanks for giving this show a well-earned spotlight. I admit I’m a fan of procedurals but only when they offer more than wooden characters going through the motions. Bones, NCIS and the original flavor CSI have humor, chemistry, personality and flair. CSI’s Miami and NY are missing those key ingredients.
Love Bones! I watched because I followed David Boreanaz from Buffy to Angel to this, but he’s not the reason I stay. Love all the characters, really care about those squints and Booth and Brennan are all about that sexual tension. All of the characters have such great relationships with each other though. Here’s a great group of co-workers who have learned to love one another. The fact that they solve cool mysteries is a bonus.
Bones is definitely my favorite show right now (maybe tied with NCIS) because of the characters. And of course it helps that Booth is, well, hot. I hope they bring Eugene Byrd back, because I like him, and I like the idea of throwing another talented forensic anthropologist into the team and seeing what develops.
Best detective show on TV.period.
I’m a big fan of the show, and I enjoy David Boreanez as much as the others who have commented here, but let’s give Emily Deschanel her due. She is not only drop-dead gorgeous, but she really makes her character fun, and even compelling, to watch. What an odd bird Bones is! It’s been suggested that the character has a mild form of Asperger’s syndrome–People with it usually have brilliant analytical minds, but virtually no sense of proper social interactive skills–it’s sort of like insulting someone to their face with an abrupt or callous comment without even realizing it.
Anyway, the entire cast is fun to watch, and easy to care about. It should be a great season.
i’m really interested as to why Zack got shipped back. That was squint babble that he was spouting when he explained. As for Cam, she’s just as detached as Zack and Brennan, so I think she can turn off her emotions whenever she wants. The on-going serial killer storyline needs to be more defined. Is it a secret society of cannibals or not? Because if it is…1) ill 2) stop it. Oh and it’s surprising that you didn’t mention the baby eating psycho. Such a freaking weirdo. However, that Vatulolo thing was hilarious when I first heard it.
I totally agree…I’ve seen every episode of the show, and that whole eating babies monologue CREEPED me out to no end. I’m excited for this whole cannibalistic society thing, because with Bones, we know it won’t just be about cannibals. It’s probably some sort of like twisted ritual thing, and I’m excited to see Hodgins work his conspiracy theory magic.
And his whole spazz about the giant man Angela married? Hi-larious. And I’m glad Zach’s back, but when is Stephen Fry’s doctor coming back to work on Booth/Brennan’s “symbiotic” relationship?!?
