Snap judgment: Kellie Pickler's '... A Man's Mind'

She may have finished behind Taylor Hicks, KatharineMcPhee, and Paris Bennett during her sixth-place run on American Idol‘ssuper-competitive fifth season, but Kellie Pickler looks more and more like awinner with each track she releases from her debut disc, Small Town Girl.Pickler’s third single, "Things That Never Cross a Man’s Mind," got ashout-out as a "Choice Cut" in the music section of this week’s issue of EW, so I decided to give it a listen myself. From the openingblast of guitars to that tinkling piano line, "… A Man’s Mind" is contagious fun, with cheeky lyrics ("These curtains clash with thecarpet/ The color scheme is a crime/ Things that never cross a man’smind") that actually had me laughing out loud before I’d finished my firstDiet Dr. Pepper of the day (no small accomplishment). So what if her ill-fatedIdol rendition of "Unchained Melody" was as tuneful as test of theEmergency Broadcast System? When it comes time to leave the confines of realityTV and make a mark on the Billboard charts, personality counts — and Pickler’sgot it coming out her pores. But don’t take my word for it. I challenge hatersand fans alike to listen to the embedded version of "Things That NeverCross a Man’s Mind" and then give a thumbs up (or down) in the commentssection below.

it’s not too bad. she should have sung it stronger though, she doesn’t have enough power or the end of sentences, kind of loses it urgency. otherwise it’s pretty good, they should have given it to shania, she’d blow it out of the park.

She is the only American Idol contestant whose CD I bought, which is strange since I’m a big fan of Carrie’s and Kelly’s. When I first heard “Red High Heels,” at the listening station at the Borders in Providence last February, I couldn’t resist it. I was hooked and bought the entire CD and it has some good fun spunky songs. But Red High Heels is the catchiest though.

Loved it! Another reason why NOT winning AI is a good thing!

Pickler is great, she really made a good ole country album..hopefully country radio will play this song more..I WONDER was a great tune and it never went higher than 14 on the charts..

Can’t wait to see her pose for Playboy, because her “Apple Bottom” is HOT!

The writing is fun, but Kellie’s voice is still just too thin for me to really dig into anything she’s singing. Give it to Sugarland and it’ll have the right oomph.

So funny! I’m not a country fan unless they have some cheeky humor involved. I loved it! I just hope the video matches and doesn’t have a vixen-like Pickler.

I like Kellie, she is a sweetheart and I’m glad she’s doing well but she is definitely a “recording” artist, she needs all the tweaking protunes can provide because live she’s fun but well – - – - – - – - – - :(

Kellie blew it out of the water! There is no need to give it to anyone else, She did it herself!! Kellie is the whole package, voice, stage presense, personality. If you’ve only heard her radio releases you aint heard nuttin’ yet!! You really should go and get her album..It rocks!!

Love the Providence shout out JohnnyD, but I totally disagree about Kellie. She’s got personality, yes, but I’m just not into her music. A little too twangy – a little too produced – a little to bland. I’m waiting for Kellie to go away, in all seriousness.

I’m sorry, but I’m not a fan at all. Mindy McCready did the same shtick about a decade ago and it wasn’t that good the first time. Kellie Pickler takes up radio space that could be much better served by more talented people.

  • tia

Oh, please, the radio space is going to be filled up by any number of people with marginal talent, at least in Kellly’s case she has a great personality and good entertainment skills. As for the song, it was just ah’ight for me. I preferred Red High Heels, and Carrie’s Before He Cheats.

Any way just her boobs could get a recording contract? Because then I might be inclined to listen, er, watch…

  • Amber

I am NOT a Kellie Pickler fan, but I actually liked this song. This is way better than the first single, I couldn’t stand Red High Heels.
