Snap judgment: Kellie Pickler's '... A Man's Mind'

She may have finished behind Taylor Hicks, KatharineMcPhee, and Paris Bennett during her sixth-place run on American Idol’ssuper-competitive fifth season, but Kellie Pickler looks more and more like awinner with each track she releases from her debut disc, Small Town Girl.Pickler’s third single, "Things That Never Cross a Man’s Mind," got ashout-out as a "Choice Cut" in the music section of this week’s issue of EW, so I decided to give it a listen myself. From the openingblast of guitars to that tinkling piano line, "… A Man’s Mind" is contagious fun, with cheeky lyrics ("These curtains clash with thecarpet/ The color scheme is a crime/ Things that never cross a man’smind") that actually had me laughing out loud before I’d finished my firstDiet Dr. Pepper of the day (no small accomplishment). So what if her ill-fatedIdol rendition of "Unchained Melody" was as tuneful as test of theEmergency Broadcast System? When it comes time to leave the confines of realityTV and make a mark on the Billboard charts, personality counts — and Pickler’sgot it coming out her pores. But don’t take my word for it. I challenge hatersand fans alike to listen to the embedded version of "Things That NeverCross a Man’s Mind" and then give a thumbs up (or down) in the commentssection below.

it’s not too bad. she should have sung it stronger though, she doesn’t have enough power or the end of sentences, kind of loses it urgency. otherwise it’s pretty good, they should have given it to shania, she’d blow it out of the park.

She is the only American Idol contestant whose CD I bought, which is strange since I’m a big fan of Carrie’s and Kelly’s. When I first heard “Red High Heels,” at the listening station at the Borders in Providence last February, I couldn’t resist it. I was hooked and bought the entire CD and it has some good fun spunky songs. But Red High Heels is the catchiest though.

Loved it! Another reason why NOT winning AI is a good thing!

  • Ernesto

Pickler is great, she really made a good ole country album..hopefully country radio will play this song more..I WONDER was a great tune and it never went higher than 14 on the charts..

  • Hugh

Can’t wait to see her pose for Playboy, because her “Apple Bottom” is HOT!

  • movcritic

The writing is fun, but Kellie’s voice is still just too thin for me to really dig into anything she’s singing. Give it to Sugarland and it’ll have the right oomph.

  • Jen

So funny! I’m not a country fan unless they have some cheeky humor involved. I loved it! I just hope the video matches and doesn’t have a vixen-like Pickler.

  • furper

I like Kellie, she is a sweetheart and I’m glad she’s doing well but she is definitely a “recording” artist, she needs all the tweaking protunes can provide because live she’s fun but well – - – - – - – - – - :(

  • what_it2U

Kellie blew it out of the water! There is no need to give it to anyone else, She did it herself!! Kellie is the whole package, voice, stage presense, personality. If you’ve only heard her radio releases you aint heard nuttin’ yet!! You really should go and get her album..It rocks!!

  • NineDaves

Love the Providence shout out JohnnyD, but I totally disagree about Kellie. She’s got personality, yes, but I’m just not into her music. A little too twangy – a little too produced – a little to bland. I’m waiting for Kellie to go away, in all seriousness.

  • noledawg

I’m sorry, but I’m not a fan at all. Mindy McCready did the same shtick about a decade ago and it wasn’t that good the first time. Kellie Pickler takes up radio space that could be much better served by more talented people.

  • tia

Oh, please, the radio space is going to be filled up by any number of people with marginal talent, at least in Kellly’s case she has a great personality and good entertainment skills. As for the song, it was just ah’ight for me. I preferred Red High Heels, and Carrie’s Before He Cheats.

  • D

Any way just her boobs could get a recording contract? Because then I might be inclined to listen, er, watch…

  • Amber

I am NOT a Kellie Pickler fan, but I actually liked this song. This is way better than the first single, I couldn’t stand Red High Heels.

  • tnkdalton

A good song…something I would expect from Kelly ! Good Beat and Alot of true meaning..Fun song..I give it a thumbs up !!!

  • Robyn

I thought it was terrific! I give it a definite thumbs up! Kellie has that something special, something magical. She is so unique.

  • Mack

I think the lyrics and the tune are perfect for Kellie, and she performs it the way it was meant to be.
I don’t need for every song to be SHOUTED like some people.
This would be a great song for parties or to sing along with in the car.

  • Jessy

I think kellie is the best new singer in the world i love everything about her she is just amazeing and this song is just perfact

  • Rick

Kellie’s Small Town Girl is an awesome album. I knew from the first time I saw her audition on AI that she was a winner, and she has proven me right. TTNCAMM is a wonderful song, and I hope it goes to #1. I wish Kellie the best in her career!

  • nmjsfan

I can’t wait for her 15 minutes to be over.

  • Chris

Things That Never Cross a Man’s Mind rocks! Kellie’s entire album is one of the best ever made and almost every media publication and buyer review is highly positive. It’s also easily one of the best albums made by all Idols. Just read the reviews on Amazon.com, itunes etc. Ignore the few obvious haters and bashers who didn’t buy the CD. Every song on the album is great (rare).

I bought Kellie’s CD the day it came out and I never get tired of playing it. I really like all of the songs on it which is pretty unusual. I can’t tell you how much I love watching this girl. She had me hooked on the first episode of Idol.

  • libbyrose

Kellie had us at “audition”….she is the best……overall…..except for perhaps Carrie who has come out of AI….she also has so many “pluses”….like personality, charm, and is DDG….Just Love That Girl…..Think she will be around for a long, long time.

  • Chris

Also check out Kellie’s other new release, her great remake of Santa Baby for the soon to be released Sony BMG album “Hear Something Country Christmas”! Kellie’s singing, yes bashers, her SINGING is the BEST singing of Santa Baby ever recorded! And Kellie is the ONLY new artist on this album! So take that and deposit it into your BoJ (Bank of Jealousy) account. lol

Just proves Carrie Underwood she ain’t.
cute personality but there are so many talented women in country that haven’t had nearly the exposure she has and it’s a shame because they deserve it over her. IMO

  • Marvin

Kellie is by far the best Singer to grace Nashville in decades. She is the
complete package, beauty, personalty, voice and stage presence. Don’t know how she could improve. She deserves a lot better promotion than she is receiving. Anyway, you jeaulous haters might as well just stand down, Kellie is on her way to years of success, no matter what you. Kellie ROCKS!

  • Chris

Sam – Good! If I want to listen to Carrie I will listen to Carrie. If I want to listen to Kellie I will listen to Kellie. No great singer wants or needs to copy another one. Carrie isn’t Josh Gracin and Kellie and Bucky aren’t Carrie. Carrie isn’t Martina, Alison, LeAnn, or Dolly. And they don’t need to prove it. Kellie is one of the most talented women in country and that’s why Sony BMG chose to sign her, unlike winners and runners-up which they must sign by contract. Chris and Kellie are the only 2 they chose to sign. I don’t see many other women in country getting the same great fan and media reviews for their music and concerts. I don’t hear Carrie saying she loves many other songs like she did Kellie’s I Wonder. Since both Carrie and Kellie have good taste in music I’m not surprised they like each other’s songs.

  • Nancy Walker

When she sung Unchained Melody, she was robotic, but her voice was not bad. The only problem I find with this song, is that no one has been able to duplicate the emotion Bobby Hatfield brought to the song.
She can sing and this song is catchy. A true country feel to it. I think she is going to go far.
