Sam Neill has been our favorite Kiwi leading man for so long (sorry, Russell) that we suppose we should be less surprised than we are at the arrival of his 60th (!) birthday. At least he’s not slowing down; coming off his fine turn earlier this year in The Tudors (pictured, with Neill, left, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers), he has several more movies in the works. He certainly deserves a birthday haiku:
Your Brilliant Career —
Wisest move yet: sitting out
Jurassic Park IV.

Happy B’day, Sam!
One of the best. The Hunt for Red October is a favorite.
You bred raptors?
Gary I think you messed up with the haiku, the first two lines have too many syllables.

Most underrated? Event Horrizon. Creee-py.
He made a pretty good Antichrist in “Omen III: The Final Conflict”
Favourites: Hunt for Red October & Dead Calm.
PS If you’re going to call Sam a Kiwi then you’ve got to call Russell an Aussie.
I don’t know why but my favorite Sam Neill role is his tv miniseries as “Merlin” – great cast, fun special effects and the affair between Sam and Isabella Rossellini was magic.
Anne13 – I thought so too, but Russell was born in New Zealand. I think he had to move to Australia to find more room for his ego.
What’s yer beef on this Haiku? It’s perfectly legit.
Invest in a dictionary man!
and happy birthday to you, Mr. Neill.
Sam Neill was born in Ireland, not New Zealand. Just like all those folks who call erroneously call Nicole Kidman (born in Hawaii), Naomi Watts and Olivia Newton John (born in Englan) Aussies, Neill is no Kiwi (New Zealander).
yay! Happy Birthday Sam…one of my absolute favorites…I wish somebody would hurry up and put the Tudors on dvd so I can see it.
Snarf…good call on “Event Horizon”. That movie (and Neill specifically) still creeps me out to this day.
“…I’ve decided to
endorse your birthday” (nod to)
my fave J.P. line
Emperor Norton, like Horation says, Sam Neill was born in Ireland, Russell Crowe was born in New Zealand. Either Sam’s an Irishman and Russell’s a New Zealander or Sam’s a New Zealander and Russell’s an Australian. Both moved when they were children, so I’d go with the latter.
LOVE the haiku, and you’re right, great decision! I loved Sam Neill in Jurassic Park and Hunt for Red October but I have thorougly enjoyed him recently in movies such as Wimbledon and The Tudors, go Sam Neill, go! and Happy Birthday!
It’s a nice poem but a haiku has 5-7-5 syllable arrangement. This has 6-8-5. Don’t be offended if I miscount.
‘Brilliant’ is a 2 syllable word, hence, first line is OK. I’m scratching my head on your second line theory of 8.
Have a good one, Sam!!
I pronounce brilliant ‘bril-li’ant’ it’s one of those words that works either way. As for the second, I misread it as movie, not move. oops.
Okay, not to be a wanky fanboy, but Sam Neill’s family is Kiwi, and his dad was stationed in Ireland for his job when Sam (Nigel) was born.
So yes, he was born in Ireland, but his people and ancestors are from NZ, and he spent most of his life there because his family moved back when he was little.
But he’s probably got a dual citizenship passport.
