'Graduation' means never dealing with MTV again

Categories: Music

Kanye_lUh, yeah. If only. I graduated years ago and I still have to put up with their BS! But Kanye West says he’s done with the network, alleging producers "exploited" both Britney and himself during Sunday night’s Video Music Awards show. The rapper (pictured, with 50 Cent) claims he never wanted to perform songs from a private suite and would have preferred to open the show with "Stronger" on the main stage. Well, duh. But then we wouldn’t have this great new reason to make fun of Britney. Priorities, please! Silly Kanye.

Here’s my favorite quote: "I feel like they tried to make it seem like I was so into everything that was going on in the show." Funny, that’s exactly how I felt while I was watching that crapfest! All the items in my house were making me feel incredibly self-conscious. I was like "Hello, sofa, I have to watch it for work. I feel dirty, don’t worry." My Reese’s poster also kept giving me weird looks that suggested I wasn’t appropriately dressed for the telecast. (I was wearing pants.) The entire process was uncomfortable.

So I understand Kanye’s sentiment. But really? He’ll never deal with MTV again? Methinks someone wants us to remember for the thousandth time that his new album goes on sale today…

MTV has the relevence of QVC these days. Way to go out on a limb, Kanye.

Kanye’s got a great point, as did JT when he dissed on MTV for all the reality shows. Like most Genexers, MTV is desperately trying to find a way to stay hip and relevant. So they’ve gone to lowest common denominator tv and the results have been a disaster.
Kanye’s not done with the network. His videos will still air (whenever MTV decides to show videos, that is) as while MTV’s aged like the CD, there’s been no tv equivalent to the Mp3 to save music videos.

  • Snarf

    Awww poor tortured exploited art-ise!
He has an amazingly fragile ego considering it’s size.

  • Court

omg, please stop with the MTV posts.
I love you guys to death but that was the worst thing ever–let’s please make it go away now! Mtv hasn’t been relevant for a couple of years now.

  • Stephen

I agree they exploited Britney, but not Kanye. He is soooo outspoken and would have realized he was being taken advantage of. Plus, did he really think he would win. He should have known JT had the backing of every teenage girl with a phone.

  • Roman

Ugh, I’m so sick of hearing Kanye go on and on about being wronged and pulling the race card. First of all, it’s a VMA. Not really that big of a deal as far as awards go. Second, Video of the Year winner was Rihanna…who is black. Thus, I really don’t think that MTV has a vendetta against black people, only egomaniacs. The only good point he makes in his little hissy fit (on Youtube BTW) is that MTV is exploited Britney for ratings, which is absolutely correct. However, since Britney has pretty much allowed herself to become a walking exploitation for general consumption by the public, I really don’t see what the fuss is about. Grow up Kanye and learn some humility.

  • ronaldo

exploitation? come on; virtually anything done involving celebrities is exploitation: People magazine, Entertainment Tonight, celebrity endorsements….it’s all a form of exploiting celebrity “status” for gain. I agree with the other poster; enough of the MTV nonsense.

  • nathan

I walked by MTV studios the other day in Times Square, looked up and didn’t know if TRL was still on the air or not, that’s how relevant MTV has become. They should just move out and let Hard Rock Cafe expand, at least they play MUSIC in there!

  • Bertie

Oh come on!! Britney and Kanye knew exactly what they were doing. She’s a big girl and don’t tell me she wasn’t using them as much as they were using her. Both of them have experience with this and know EXACTLY what comes with this business. Whatever gets you on camera and talked about. Very coincidental that his album comes out today and he throws a tantrum a couple days before. WOW, there’s a shocker!! Not like Britney or Kanye at all…

  • BJohnson

Like he said on the radio about mtv, he really isn’t losing much. One 1/2 video play on TRL, if that? MTV don’t care, as long as people still watch spoiled brats on 16 and getting cars they’ll crash in a year & the real oc 90210 stuff, they’ll keep putting it on.

  • t3hdow

Uh, Roman, exactly where did Kanye throw the race card in that interview? He defended Britney Spears for crying out loud. Now that I think about it, I don’t remember Kanye ever using the race card when he complained about anything (except the handling of Katrina, but that was a national crisis, not a celebrity blunder). Also, for once, Kanye’s outbursts are actually sound. MTV did a horrible job this year at the VMAs this year. The problem is, as most of you guys already stated, MTV’s getting more and more irrelevant as the years go by when it comes to music (and especially the VMAs). It’s not exactly rocket science that MTV sucks now, but it’s a little refreshing to hear it from some musical stars. Justin Timberlake’s outburst was funny, though. Having the stars of The Hills present your award after lashing out to the network’s tendency to produce too much reality TV is the definition of irony.

  • Dominic Matheny

I think the worst part for Kanye is that he realizes that MTV would make the same decision again tomorrow and the next day and the next day.

  • MsDaisy

Apparently the VMA voters were not nearly as impressed with Kanye as he is with himself. He seems to think he’s entitled to win every award he’s nominated for.

  • Ceballos

Kanye’s done with MTV…so I guess there go his appearances on The Hills, Real World and Super Duper Sweet 16 because the network damn sure doesn’t really have a hell of a lot to do with music.

  • Joel

Kanye’s a genius, his new album is awesome, and I hope he follows through on his threats to have nothing to do with MTV ever again.

  • deb-O-rah

Um, I believe Kanye played the race card when he said maybe his skin wasn’t right to win an award and when he said, “Give a black man a chance”. I agree with other posters–his ego is rather fragile for one so large. And his new song is just another one cobbled together from snippets of better songs. I’m sure he’ll come running back to MTV or who ever else will give him some camera time.

  • Stephen

HAHA THAT PIC LOOKS LIKE A BANNER FOR GAY MARRIAGE!!!

  • jason

ah, kanye, the misunderstood genius. i used to like him and look past his ego. i can’t do it anymore. i think “stronger” is a weak song, and i have had it with him. who cares if he’s cutting ties with mtv? not like they play videos anyway. oh, and the NEW IMPROVED VMA’s were the worst thing i’ve ever seen. predictable winners, WAY WAY WAY too much justin (who i DO like, btw), and rocky performances. MTV just proved how completely irrelevant it now is. what a mess, and not even a hot mess, just a MESS.

  • Stephen (again)

EW needs to do a cover story on the irrelevance of MTV and how this was the worst vma’s ever. they’d make it really good journalism

  • Yeaaahhh!

Kanye: I wish i could quit you 50
50 cent: Let’s go to the club and talk about this later

  • Phil

First off, I want to agree that Sunday night’s VMAs were a complete A.D.D. catastrophe! Whoever came up with the idea to have the random surprise collaboration performances in the Fantasy Suites started off with a good idea. UNTIL Mtv chopped those performances down to mini sets, much like they do with their videos during TRL. A good idea was turned into scattered dreams. NOW, with that being said, I get Kanye’s frustration, only so much in that MTV did give him almost EQUAL as much airtime as both 50 Cent & JT, only that Kanye did not get to perform in the Pearl Theater’s mainstage. Sure Mtv gave him TWO performance slots with him doing both “Stronger” & then “The Good Life” with T-Pain in his suite, but Kanye EVER the sore loser, saw JT get to perform both “Lovestoned”& “Give It To Me” w/Timbaland & Nelly, AFTER he performed “Ayo Technology” w/50 & Timbo in his suite as well. Kanye’s a hard worker & promotes his craft wholeheartedly, but always lets his ego get the best of him.

The CD : The MP3 as MTV : YouTube.
Thats where the music video can be saved, but I’m not sure I want it to be. Yes, Music Television should be about music, but isn’t it true that the music video had a pretty negative affect on music? Isn’t it fairly responsible for the fact that singers of late are more likely to be good looking than musically talented?
Britney’s facial expression summed up the problem with MTV in the first place. It was as if she suddenly realized that she had never deserved to be there, and knew everyone else was thinking the same thing.
I’ve gotten more musical fulfillment out of 2 years of youtubing than 20 years of MTV by ignoring the music videos that come up when I search for my favorite artists and instead clicking on the live performances. I’ve never gotten the chills from a music video. This wasnt just Britney’s last chance, it was MTV’s…and they are both completely irrelevant. Fortunately for Britney, I think she may know it.

  • Phil

Finally, I can’t be certain how sincere Kanye’s remarks concerning Britney actually are, since its been well documented how Kanye felt she was unworthy to open the show & that she hasn’t had a hit in the past few years. AGAIN, he was claiming Mtv set her up, BUT how can we be so sure he wasn’t again exercising his ego when he said that statement, since he knew it would make HIM look good after he knew MTv denied him the opening slot & Britney pretty much tanked? We can’t be sure, but anyone who has a brain should be able to understand Kanye is smart & knew how to AGAIN spin this to his advanatage. Also, completely agree with t3hdow, about the Hills girls presenting jT with the award & him simultaneously ripping into Mtv and them for being reality “stars”. The VMAs were once about awarding prizes for videos, & yeah since Mtv doesn’t really show them anymore, perhaps its time to morph the VMAs into the CSSAs:Crappy Scripted Soap Awards! AND Kanye will be back with Mtv before his next cd.

  • Shamrock

I agree with all, Mtv is irrelevant and hosting a Video Music Award is downright ridiculous. I think YouTube and Yahoo should combine forces and host their own since that is where I see all my videos from.

  • legnayram

Kanye won’t be done with MTV, however, even Timberland, the “Maestro,” had the same concerns about Britney opening the show. He felt that she wasn’t ready to open the show. I actually do feel that MTV exploited Britney. They knew that we expected to watch the trainwreck that was going to happen even though we hoped to see something spectacular from her.

  • You-Know-Who

Heres the link to the radio show where he talked about all this. Sorry it’s so long. He definitely thinks a lot of himself, but I think people misinterpret some of his huge ambition and obsessive perfectionism as a big ego. I do think the press has portrayed him unfairly. ehttp://www.z100.com/cc-common/

Evidently, Kanye is serious. He was a scheduled guest for TRL on Tuesday, but failed to show up.

  • Celi

More power to Kanye. Yes, the man has an ego the size of the moon and it got bruised… but he’s also undeniably talented and quite clever. If he says he wants no more to do with MTV, I’ll still support him. Besides, MTV is so over.

  • Nix

Yay! Debacle, JT calling MTV out, Kanye saying he’s done with it — maybe the tyranny of soul-destroying reality tv will finally be over! An utterly blasphemous duet between Marilyn Manson and Kathy Griffin would be more uplifting than one more minute of SoCal teens fretting about hair!

  • Gretchen Weiners

I gave some serious consideration to buying is new album, as I enjoyed the last two and his new single. However, his insistence on acting like a spoiled, whiney little beyotch has changed my mind.
