If there were enough people interested in the family hour shows, the networks would be showing them. You think their goal is to give you TV you dont want! That said, it is really distressing how low TV has sunk. I enjoy some of it, but find alot of it inappropriate for children. But folks, teaching your kids right from wrong is your job, not TV, Barry Bonds, Linday Lohan etc.
The whole concept of family viewing time is alien to me, because I never paid attention to primetime TV until somewhere in my teenage years. Now that I think about it, I wasn’t really at home much during my pre-teen years during the school week. On most days, my mom sent me somewhere else, where I had to keep myself occupied by after school activites, reading, drawing or playing my Game Boy. By the time I was able to come home regularly after school, I turned into a fairly responsible person, where primetime TV hardly phased me.
So I guess my point is, if parents find ways to focus their children away from TV (on top of manually blocking inappropriate programming), then they wouldn’t be complaining about this issue. I’m nto saying everyone has to follow the exact same methods, but try and do something besides watching TV.
wasn’t family hour found UnConstitution
I lost my mom as a young girl and my dad raised my brother and me on his own for many years til he remarried. So, we spent a lot of time on our own, in a time when it was way less common than now (late 70s). Did I watch a lot of tv/cable? Yep. What did that do to me? Turned me into a movie buff. That’s it. What didn’t it do? Turn me into a psychopath or slacker. I still managed to get great grades, college scholarships, and have a great career and life. TV is only one part of raising a kid, even if they watch ‘inappropriate’ stuff. I knew what was right and wrong. Ahh, how I miss those summers glued to HBO allllll day every day, when they ran the movies 8x a day, not just 3 like now!
You know, if this had this been the early eighties where the only place that you could get cable was somewhere in New Jersey or in Suffolk County, Long Island I would have agreed with the PTC. However, since cable is all over the board, I don’t see what thier problem is? Kids can watch PBS Kids, NIcktoons, Boomerang, ToonDisney, and the Disney Channel 24/7!
The Parents Television Council is in no position to advise anyone on sending wrong messages. Take a look at the name of their organization! It lacks an apostrophe! (It’s supposed to be “Parents’ Television Council”.) Neglecting proper usage of the apostrophe sends the message to kids that grammar and punctuation are unnecessary–that clarity in writing can be ignored–that mutilating the English language is fine. These parents, with their scandalous mispunctuation, are seriously jeapordizing national efforts to promote literacy! Action must be taken now!
wow, all this stuff just blows my mind. while i dont believe in shielding my kids from the world, as a parent, i find that i am capable of deciding what is and is not appropriate for my family-on my own. we have got to be the only western country that spends so much time and energy worrying about things that dont even directly affect us, hello, keep the tv turned off if the programming bothers you! i used to travel and this stuff that these idiots are freaking out about wouldnt get so much as a raised eyebrow in europe
Obviously this writer was brought up to know how to distinguish bullshit from truth, and probably watched plenty of tv along the way. Good post – the PTC and Bozo Bozell are wrong about everything. Who told them parents need their help?
I would like for someone to tell me why the commercials for Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra are being allowed to air during the so-called “Family Hours”. These commmercials are on all hours of the day. I’m glad I no longer have any pre-teens at home anymore that I would have to explain what these spots are all about. What’s next?
