Those who regularly peruse the pages of EW (the magazine) might be familiar with a regular column in the movie review section called “Ask the Critic,” in which we invite readers to pose questions to our film reviewers par excellence, Lisa Schwarzbaum and Owen Gleiberman. Among the recent batch of queries: “What television show was best adapted into a motion picture at least a decade after the series was canceled?” (Owen makes a sturdy case for…The Brady Bunch Movie) and “Who us the most influential movie critic of the last two decades?” (film-school favorites Andrew Sarris and Pauline Kael must be relegated to the row of seats behind Roger Ebert, opines Lisa). I’m guessing a bunch of you have questions you’ve always wanted to ask a professional film critic. We want to hear them. In fact, I’ll start with one of my own: “Hey, Owen or Lisa, what is the single scariest throw-your-popcorn-in-the-air movie moment you’ve ever experienced?” Okay, your turn. And remember to please include your email address so that we may contact you should we print your brilliant and insightful question.

What film, while meaning to be a serious drama, has the biggest coincidence in it that completely ruins any sense of believability in it?
It’s one of life’s eternal questions: Pacino. DeNiro. Who ya got?
Who is the most over-rated actor/actress in Hollywood? Underrated?
What movie do you hate to admit that you love?
AFI recently released their updated list of the greatest movies of all time. Number one, once again, was Citizen Kane, a film made nearly 70 years ago. When I saw that there was only one film on the list from the last decade, I got to wondering, do you think a movie released in this day and age has any chance of being crowned the new GOAT?
Are there directors (or even actors) who have such a strong body of work that they earn a bit of a pass from critics when their names are attached to less-than-worthy projects? Do you have “pet artists”?
What is your favorite comfort movie – the movie you put on when you’re in a bad mood, the movie you could watch over and over again because it always makes you happy?

If The Godfather Part III is regarded as one of the worst movies ever, why was it nominated for Best Picture of the Year at the Oscars? What is the worst Best Picture Nominee of all-time?
What movie do you think has the most pivotal 5 minutes in terms of being important later on? So basically, what’s the worst walk-in-late movie? (My vote is for the Sixth Sense)
What truly makes a film a classic? Some of the classics we have today (It’s a Wonderful Life, Wizard of Oz) weren’t necessarily the big movies of the time.
Fifty years from now, which of today’s movie stars will we look upon as our “Gables, Dietrichs, and Hepburns”?
Reasking this one due to computer error:
What truly makes a film a classic? Some of the classics we have today (It’s a Wonderful Life, Wizard of Oz) weren’t necessarily the big movies of the time. Which three movies of recent times will be considered “classics” fifty years from now?
What summer recent movie of the past 8 months has the chance to be one of those industry changing films, ala “The Matrix” or “Pulp Fiction”?
Is there a movie that, whether the story and acting was good or not, where you sat there and thought ‘This is the most visually stunning movies I have ever seen.’? If so, which one?
What advice do you have for aspiring film critics? What’s better — having a film background or a journalism background?
Do you think comedies will ever get the amount of respect dramas get, especially around Oscar time? Why or why not?
i have two questions.
1) how come movies that have been rated really highly by the critics generally don’t please the audience as well?
2)how can every movie claim to be “the number one movie in America” all at the same time? there can only be one number one…
Have you ever feigned complete comprehension of an avant garde film (perhaps early on in your career) when you really weren’t quite sure what you had just seen?
What is your biggest movie pet peeve? In other words, what is the one thing that can ruin an otherwise good (or even perfect) movie for you?
Mine would have to be the slow clap, that starts with one person then spreads throughout the room. Or, similarly, when 1 person stands up to show their support, and then another, and then another, and so on.
Was there a specific movie or moment when you thought, sure being a famous actor or director would be great but all I want to do is be a critic!
What’s the most over rated movie of all time?
What can be done to encourage younger generations to embrace classic movies?
What director from Hollywood’s Golden Age do you feel has been overlooked by pop culture? Actor? Actress?
When the content of a film closely mirrors one of your own personal life experiences, do you try to ignore it in order to provide a more balanced review or do you take your experience into account to judge how well–or poorly–the film captured it?
I have often found that I thoroughly enjoy movies that critics have given two thumbs down, and most of the people I know say the same. Are critics really out of touch with what “real people” like, or do we just not know where to find critics that like what we like?
One of the age-old traditions of motion pictures is the concept of couples meeting cute. What is your all-time favorite cute meet and why?
have either of you ever regretted giving too much info(i.e. spoilers)in a review?
What movie that you know is terrible, can you not turn off when it comes on TV (and actually enjoy)? I recently saw “The Pirate Movie” for the first time in 25 years and was riveted by is awfulness.
My teen son is a theater geek, but he just doesn’t get/can’t stomach/doesn’t understand the popularity of High School Musical (1&2). Please explain why this franchise exploded like a burning bag of stinkum left on a front porch.
I recently saw the trailer for the ping pong movie “Balls of Fury.” And I had to ask myself, “What studio exec actually pushed this through? Do they actually expect this to make money?” It seems as they don’t, after all, they don’t prescreen the film, they don’t give it a lot of press, and they often push the release date back and back. So my question is this: Is anyone ever suprised these movies fail?
Have you ever seen an actors diss a movie they were in years after it came out? They look back, in an interview, and say “oh that was a really bad idea.” But I always wonder if they know that at the time. One could imagine, how could they not? But when promoting that stinker of a film, they’re positive and excited. So I wonder – do you think they really know? Ever see a performance in a film where you know an actor has just given up all hope?
What are the best and worst cameos you’ve ever seen in a movie? Cameos including but not limited to rock stars, rap stars, sports stars, D-list celebrities, former reality show contestants…
