Send us your electrifying Must List suggestions!

Categories: Must List

Send us your ML-worthy TV shows/albums/books/movies/video games/websites — and then check out this super-awesome footage of a big ol’ 55,000-watt Tesla coil sending 30-foot discharges arcing through the air. Shocking, eh? (Sorry.) So send your suggestions (up to three) and make sure to include your email address (which we’ll need to contact you if your submission is chosen).  The deadline for entries is 10 AM on Thursday, August 23.

Rex Lee in “Entourage”: As the season winds down, it’s become more apparent than ever that Lloyd’s interactions with Ari have been the best thing about the show this year with its tired “Medellin” saga. Lee takes simple lines like “Hi, Julio” and “It sounded like your wife before, but it doesn’t now” and turns them into comedic (Ari) gold.

The new Josh Ritter album: “The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter.” It’s like listening to a poet lauriate with a great pop-folk background.

  • Stephanie T.

The Marx Brothers comedy classic “Duck Soup”. It is being aired this month on HBO digital cable. This movie was before World War II but watching it today, and then to compare it to the current “war” makes you think.

  • Samra

Kristin Wiig! She is the best SNL cast member in recent years (yes, even better than the all-too-popular Andy Samberg) and she is consistently hilarious in pretty much everything she does (even in minor roles like her part in Knocked Up). Also, she’s in two upcoming comedies that both look very promising: The Brothers Solomon and Walk Hard. Her recurring sketches on SNL, like “Target Lady” and “Penelope” give me hope that the show will finally reverse its recent decline into complete suckitude.

The return of Real Time with Bill Maher. The only show on television featuring a truly frank and open discussion of current events and the state of the world.
Bob Saget: That Ain’t Right. Who knew that behind the Full House facade there lurked a filthy and hilarious comedian?

My Must List pick is that new number 1 song in the UK, “With Every Heartbeat” from Robyn! SAY WHAT? Is this really the same girl who sang the 1997 hit song “Show Me Love”? Well she has re-invented herself as Kate Bush meets Goldfrapp? Check out the video:

  • Todd

McLovin. Even though he’s already pretty much overexposed (I’ve got friends that have his picture on their MySpace profiles already), he still totally owns “Superbad,” which is a movie that’s pretty funny in its own right.

  • Allison

Mandy Moore’s cover of Rihanna’s Umbrella.

  • Daniel

    – The “Walk Hard” trailer – Judd Apatow can do no wrong. Nor can John C. Reilly and Jenna Fischer.
    – The Official LOST Magazine – the new 100-page yearbook is out now, with cast/crew interviews, behind the scenes photos and scripts, and Q&A with Damon Lindelof.
    – “New Avengers” by Brian Michael Bendis and Leinil Yu – this comic book series is back on track with gritty-but-gorgeous art by the outstanding Yu, and an intriguing “Who do you trust?” storyline, following the big reveal that Elektra has been a Skrull infiltrator for who knows how long.

  • Heather

The Lives of Others on DVD. More than a simple spy story, this beautiful movie raises the spirits and inspires faith in goodness of mankind. It was without doubt the true best picture of 2006 and should not be missed.

  • nathan

CD – M.I.A. – Kala (even though EW gave it only a ‘B’ rating, it’s actually closer to an ‘A’.
Movie – Superbad – So so very funny, ’nuff said.
DVD – The First Films of Samuel Fuller on the Eclipse label.

  • Jilly

Bruce Campbell in “Burn Notice” on USA network. And I’m starting to like the lead actor too.

  • Richard

Flipping Out on Bravo. Real Estate guy Jeff Lewis and his “family” of paid assistants are the closest thing we are ever likely to see to a reality version of Arrested Development. Half the fun of tuning is is to try and diagnose which mental disorder Jeff will be displaying that week. OCD, Passive/Agressivieness, Multiple Personality Disorder, or somthing new? Tuesday’s at 10EDT on Bravo.

  • Stephen

Ugh, here I go again. Seriously, when will I be in an issue?
“My December” by Kelly Clarkson. Deemed not ‘radio-friendly’ by Clive Davis is a compliment, as each track here is stronger than any crap on the radio.

  • Sarah

“Superbad” – yea it’s funny and everything but, speaking as a teenager days away from going to college, I was extremely happy to see a movie about teenagers who weren’t rich snobs and who didn’t say things like “lol” and “omg” out loud

  • Carly

    1. The Soup on E! is still the funniest show on television. And best piece of satire around.
    2. Superbad. Freaks and Geeks fans will love all the cameos — Mr. Kowcheski! Bill! That guy from the geeks’ gym class! Neal’s brother! Millie’s cousin! That creepy guy that Daniel invited to Lindsay’s party!
    3. Rescue Me. While this season isn’t the best, Tommy going off on another 9/11 speech brings the show back to it’s roots. And I like it that way.

  • Alison

    1. John Meyer’s take on Chocolate Rain. Funny, funky stuff. Check out the extended version on youtube.
    2. The Soup on E!. Joel’s my hero and who wouldn’t love Louuuu.
    3. The Pick up Artist on VH1. Geeks taking cool lessons from a creepy guy. Hysterical!

  • Danielle

Matt Nathanson’s “Some Mad Hope” album. Possibly the best album he’s ever released

  • Broadway Baby

The Combinations album by Eisley – smart, versatile pop. A great way to wind up the summer…

  • Jonathan

Scott Smith’s “The Ruins” (released in paperback). Electrifyingly tense. Unbelievably exciting. Bloody and amazingly affecting. You won’t soon forget it once you read the final pages.
Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling in “Fracture”.
Kelly Clarkson “Sober”, her beautiful but pathetically promoted 2nd single.

  • Ryan

    Mary Louise Parker on Weeds.
    Flight of the Conchords.

  • Ron Mwangaguhunga

DVD-Rome, the complete second season, Flash Gordon;books: Pamela des Barres: Backstage Secrets of Rock Muses, The Prince of Darkness-Robert Novak, Chingo Bling, They Can Deport Us, music-Sarah Blasco, Planet New Year, The New Pornographers;web site: Studio360.org, cinematical; performance: Susan Sarandon, Rescue Me

  • David Block

    1. Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds: Live At Radio City Music Hall – Some of the most beautiful and soulful music to be released this decade; Let Dave’s soothing opening notes on “Bartender” carry you through over 2 hours of blissful music.
2.”Rehab (Remix)” – Amy Winehouse feat. Jay-Z – The remix of the already popular song easily trumps the original w/ Jay-Z’s take on the diva’s bad behavior. All the more relevant now, that it seems she’s said YES YES YES to rehab.
    3. Terry Fator on “America’s Got Talent” – Who’d ever thought a ventrilogquist could be so moving? The recent and very deserved winner of the NBC talent competition might even make you shed a tear with his heartfelt renditions of Louie Armstrong’s “What A Wonderful World” and Kermit the Frog’s “Bein’ Green” – Defenite YouTube’s if you haven’t seen them yet!

  • monica

    I agree with Allison:
Mandy Moore’s cover of Rihanna’s Umbrella…or even just the fact that there are so many artists starting to cover each other’s songs and some not just as a spoof.

  • miriam

Must albums: Gulag Orkestar by Beirut, Sound of Silver by LCD Soundsystem, Men’s Nedds Women’s Needs Whatever by The Cribs, Wait for Me by the Pigeon Detectives
Must films: Born and Bred, Bourne Ultimatum, Flanders, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Paris Je T’aime
Must books: A Spot of Bother by Mark Haddon, The Heart of the Matter by Graham Greene, The Complete Poems by John Keats

  • Chris G

Movie: Superbad. It’s only like the funniest movie of the summer (ok it ties with Knocked Up)
TV on DVD: Dexter is one of the best TV characters of recent memory. You actually root for his serial madness.
Internet: The Grape Lady on Youtube. Realizing this has been out for a while, I must quote Mrs. Doubtfire: “A classic never dies.”

  • Mindy

    1) Flight of the Conchords–It’s the most original series out there with a supporting cast that packs as much punch as the FOTC band members themselves. They’re so very rock ‘n roll with their leather suits and getting buzzed on a can of mixed nuts!
    2) Funnyordie.com–This website gave us such classics as “The Landlord” and “Good Cop, Baby Cop,” plus the hilarity of a petite Asian (from “Knocked Up” fame) decked out in a crushed velvet unitard singing the utterly unforgettable refrain of “What’s It Gonna Be?” Watch it once, and the chorus will be stuck in your head for months to come. Mainly because you can’t watch it just once.
    3) The Bourne Ultimatum–Amazing action sequences, a tight script, a witty and creative spy caper, an unrelenting search for identity…plus Matt Damon in tight shirts generally kicking everyone’s butt.

  • LisaMama

    1. The Closer — Kyra Sedgwick is brilliant!
    2. Burn Notice — Now that it’s been picked up for another season, there’s no excuse not to watch.
    3. Bourne Ultimatum — Better than the first two, and that’s saying something.

  • Laura

    1. The Queen’s Knight – Beautiful and engaging manga. Volume 9 just came out but I can’t find it anywhere. :(
    2. Robot Chicken Season 3
    3. Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon for the DS – The latest in the Harvest Moon series, it’s farming meets dungeon crawling. I plow my fields, harvest my crops and then go kill orcs after which I go courting one of the local girls. It’s great.

  • Jess Hahn

This previously unreleased Mariah track is a sexy throwback and is a ‘must’ listen:
