What musical golden age are we looking to go back to? “Louie Louie”? “Mairzy Doats”? Why complain about lyrics in a song that may use words primarily for their rhythm? It’s like complaining that Ella Fitzgerald just sings gobbledygook a lot.

  • Ellipsian

Junior, it’s a serious mistake to blanket all grammatic errors by artists under the label of “art”. Why does creative expression always trump proper grammar? Is it only valid to excuse it as creative license when the artist intends to “twist” grammar and isn’t just ignorant? And what about authors; they’re artists, do the same rules apply?
Finally, if my examples include Alanis Morissette’s “Ironic” (she meant coincidence, not irony), Backstreet Boys’ “All I Have to Give” lyrics (“I don’t care if he buys you nice things/
Does [sic] his gifts come from the heart?”) and Missy Elliott’s “Get Ur [sic] Freak On”, does that mean I’m racist because I fingered more white people than black? Your racism claim against Slezak is unfounded, despicable, and just plain freakin’ silly. For shame.

Race Card is defined as an easy scapegoat, usually used by someone in un unbeatable situation, in which they resort to it a sbeing racist. Some examples:
Wesley Snipes claiming racism in his tax fraud case.
O.J. Simpson claiming racism when thrown out of a restaurant a few weeks ago.
Now, many things are racist (Don Imus and Michael Richards come to mind) but not all, especially this post.

    Pedants, the lot of you.

  • o canada

Kris shut the hell up there some grammer for your ass. You dont know nothing about rap music. Why dont you same the same for heavy metal gothic type music? i can give a damn about the race card cuz even though its mostly blacks that rap its almost just much whites support it than blacks Go to a huge rap concert and take a look at the crowd you see mostly whites. Rap music is just another art form of music the same with Hard Rock. As far as grammmer in music take a look at movie titles tak a look at ssome of the store names and restaraunts. If your dumb retarded ass kid uses music to learn how to spell please do everybody a favor and give him a late abortion as a matter of fact dimiss yourself from earth because you just as dumb for not teaching your child correctly. Stop blaming music for lack of parenting and teach your retarded children right from wrong

  • english teacher

LOL at O canada. Good message bad grammer. To many mispelled words I guess how to spell from entertainment also. But I must agree if your kids are learning how to spell from rap music or anything other than school than blame yourself not what you see on t.v.

  • o canada

Haha english that was actually my point. So many people on here saying how they hate typos and misspelled words so I wanted to make them read typos but make a point at the sametime.

Ellipsian, I kinda get where you’re coming from but “it’s a serious mistake to blanket all grammatic errors by artists under the label of “art”.” is wrong because a (non-educational) song is ART! I can write a song called “I Is Be Walkin’ to Tha Store” and if I intended it to make a statement about anything, it’s ART and I shouldn’t have to spell check it! If a novelist legitimately makes a mistake, it’s incorrect. If it’s purposeful, it’s ART! Ugh, this isn’t that hard. Rap artists write lyrics that make statements about themselves and their community, and that’s how they talk in their community! And I agree with O Canada, black rap artists are always singled out, what about indecipherable rock songs or country slang? That’s why it’s VAGUELY racist! I’m not calling Michael racist, I know he’s not. It’s just we all have to be careful with what and how we say something. To me, a white person saying a black person should read a “dikshun airy” is kinda racist. That’s all, bye!

  • to junior

Then why are you not saying eb=veryone here attacking Fergie racist against whites? Or is spelling ‘tasty’ art?

  • junior

If Fergie’s music was created, cultivated, and mostly performed by people of her race and people were being stereotypically discriminatory against her because of her lyrics, I would most certainly call it racism. However, Fergie makes pop, so does Janet Jackson and Nelly Furtado. Same rules do not apply. And yes spelling ‘tasty’ is art! (I don’t listen to Fergie so I don’t know what song it is, but I’m sure there’s artistic expression in their somewhere.)

  • to junior

The song is called “Fergalicious.” Listen to it, and if you call it art still, then I’ll resign my side of the argument.

  • to junior

And do explain how the same rules do not apply to pop.

  • junior

    1) I will do much to make my argument, but I will not listen to “Fergialicious.” The point is it’s a song and correcting its grammar is tantamount to censorship. She’s free to express herself as she pleases, however stupid.
    2) “And do explain how the same rules do not apply to pop.” No. Figure it out.

  • to junior

I already made an assumption. The same rules do not apply to pop because you do not listen to it, so it doesn’t afeect you. But when Slezak treads on your territory, you throw a fit.

  • glasses

to ‘english teacher’, you mispelled grammar…
