The starter pistol in the Sea of Love was made at the factory where I work, pretty neat.

Al Pacino is the greatest actor of all time. He puts his soul into all his work. There isn't a movie that I have disliked that he has made. May the good Lord Bless and Keep you....Keeping you lifted in prayer

Not only is he a great actor (still), the boxset mentioned in this article is awesome. He's arguably the best actor in American film history - and he's in a different league than people like Morgan Freeman (a fine actor but who has nowhere neat the spark of genius Pacino has).

There are many great actors in the movies and I am definitely an Al Pacino fan,but I must agree with the commenter who praised the acting skills of Morgan Freeman. He,in my opinion is the Holy Grail of actors.

If you want a classic actor who does quality work while also seeming to love his job, you need to look to Morgan Freeman. Every bit the actor that Deniro or Pacino is, rarely a hammy performance, and none of that tortured artist BS. He makes the movies he's in better, not with scenery chewing, but by elevating the entire project to his level.

I loved Pacino in Heat. In that flick, he gives us the trademark roars in small snippets. THat line when he replies to Hank Azaria with "BECAUSE SHE HAD A GREAT A$$" was so good that I wore out my dvd player rewinding that scene.
But good as Pacino and all the other method actors you've mentioned were, they can't hold a candle to Gary Oldman. Whether playing an corrupt cokehead cop (Leon the Professional), the megalomaniac Mr. Burns in Outer Space (The Fifth ELement), or as the misconstrued magician (Harry Potter #3), the man can convince us he's someone else in every role.

All of the great subtle actors of the 70's now chew the scenery regularily in the current movies they now appearing in. Not just Pacino, Jack Nicholson, Robert DeNiro, Harvey Keitel. Christopher Walken, who I adore, has become typecast and asked to be a characture of himself. Dustin Hoffman in Meet the Fockers is a far cry from the subtle performances he gave in Kramer vs. Kramer, or even in another comedy like Tootsie. Only Gene Hackman still retains that understated quality. But then, the movies being produced today are a far cry from one's being made in the 70's and early 80's. Everything is over the top.
