Because we celebrated Whitney Houston’s birth on this date last year, PopWatch sends its birthday best out to Melanie Griffith, who’s turning 50 today. (Or, as our own Gary Susman says, "At least parts of her are.")
It’s been a while since I visited Melanie’s official site to, you know, see what her "Goddess Book Club" is reading. Somehow, I managed to forget about the "Dream Room" (accessed via the Story of Avalon link) in which Melanie has posted the following advice:
When I have questions in my life I look to my inner conscience for answers. Whether it’s how to portray a character or how to deal with a crisis in my life, I’ve been lucky to be able to find guidance from within. Because it has been such an incredible gift in my life, I would like to pass it on to you… Before you go to bed at night write to your inner self a letter asking for answers to be revealed to you about something that you need help with. What you seek may come to you in a dream, or the answer may develop first subconsciously and then just take place in your conscious life.
Below is one letter I use:
Dear Inner Self,
If it is your will, please reveal to me
in a dream tonight the secret of my success
in order to become closer to you. With love and respect,
-Melanie
My Inner Self is saying it’s her legs. Yours?

We all know your age!! Stop the plastic surgery now!
Other than that, I loved her in Working Girl. Happy Birthday Mel.
Melanie was ok back in her day (80s and early 90s), but it always kinda boggled me that she’s with Antonio Banderas today. I mean, I’m sure in ’87 it must’ve seemed great to be with Melanie Griffith, but not so much now. I mean, I’m sure they’re really happy and everything, and hooray to a Hollywood marriage that lasts more than two months, but still…LOOK AT HER. It’s not even the fact that she’s 50…there are a ton of women that look sexy at 50…it’s just that Melanie’s not really one of them to me…she’s a rough 50.
In the immortal words (or word) of Michael Bluth… “Her?”
My inner self is wondering why you chose to post about someone who maybe chronologically 50 but looks closer to 80? And who the hell even knows why the absolutely fine Antonio Banderas is still married to her!?!?!?!?
Uhm, Mel stop with the plastic surgery or Felicity Huffman will sue you for trying to look like her.
Anyone looked at Britney Spears official website recently? Someone has either hacked it or she’s really gone off the deep end.

How superficial people are…maybe Antonio LOVES the woman for her inner beauty and not her surgically enhanced face.
Ms. Daisy you’re absolutely right. I’m definitely being superficial in this instance which is wrong, because last time I looked nobody had signed me to any modeling contracts.
Still, you have to admit…when you’re forced to go with the “inner beauty” defense, you know someone’s hopped on the train to Uglyville. I mean, what’s next? Antonio likes her personality. Melanie used to look pretty good in her day…which is probably why she’s been trying to capture that look for the past decade and a half.
For some reason, I’m often told I have a GREAT personality, by the way.
My Inner Self tells me the secret of Melanie Griffiths’ success is not having any plastic surgery. About 20 years too late on that one, Inner Self.
Actually in an interview Antonio and Melanie said they have fantastic sex. Maybe with the lights off?
Yikes, she looks plastic. What’s wrong with wrinkles? Hollywood, wake up–no one should feel they have to be shrink-wrapped to keep working. Hire women who look their age. My mother looks better than this, wrinkles and all, and she’s 65.
Okay, I’m just going to be mean. It is hard getting older. It is hard accepting wrinkles and gray hair. Yes! but she’s gone nuts. It must take a lot of work being married to Antonio. Isn’t that when some of the crazier plastic and vinyl work started? Or maybe she had one bad surgery, tried to fix it, then needed to fix that one, on and on until we get this?
She used to be so pretty. Now her face appears to be on the verge of collapse. I’m sad.
