Trailer Blazer: 'Rendition' and 'National Treasure: Book of Secrets'

Two new trailers for two films out this fall/winter, one of ‘em all with the prestige-y, the other all with the cheesy, have just hit the ‘Net. Guess which one stars Nicolas Cage?

First up, October’s War on Terror drama Rendition, about an Egyptian-American family man who’s nabbed by the U.S. for being a suspected terrorist and flown to a friendly Arab country where he can be interrogated outside the bounds of American law. Reese Witherspoon plays the man’s American wife, Jake Gyllenhaal’s the CIA agent observing her husband’s foreign minders, Meryl Streep’s the government heavy who authorizes the transfer, and Peter Sarsgaard is the senator’s aide Reese turns to for help. The preview starts out with that old standby, the "I’ll see you when you get back (when I really won’t)" foreshadowing phone call, and then lays out the all too unnervingly real story with perhaps a touch too much exposition — I personally didn’t need to know exactly what "rendition" actually means, mostly ’cause I like a little mystery in my movie trailers. But overall, this film looks like it’s aces.

After the jump, we’ll bite into the new studio pitch for the next National Treasure flick.

To be fair, December’s fun-and-games-with-American-history adventure sequel National Treasure: Book of Secretsis actually still in production, so it’s not like director JonTurteltaub was all with the time to help shape this trailer intosomething less, er, clunky. And the flick’s plot-starting device — thediscovery of one of the 18 missing pages from John Wilkes Booth’s diary— is a pretty savvy reference to a real historical mystery. But, jeez, does this flick look like it’s all with the Kraft sandwich slices."Unlocking the mystery… the world. Isn’t ready. To believe." Aliens. You know it’s going to be aliens.

Two phrases I could really do without in the popwatch blog: “after the jump” and “all with the…” Really irritating.

Rendition looks great. Jake, Reese, Peter, Meryl – dream cast in my eyes.

Jake Gyllenhaal = HOT HOT HOT! Can’t wait.

Oh Adam, get off your high horse. My kids and I adored the first National Treasure and have watched it numerous times. This sequel looks just as fun, and they’ll learn a bunch more history without even trying. Like the trailer says, “What is it about treasure that makes history so exciting?”. Maybe it’s not a prestige film, but it’ll get my ticket money.

I would like to see a movie showing Islamic Extremist as bad guys, not always this country.

    Please… no aliens !!!

I’ve seen Rendition. I predict great reviews weak Box Office. Why, because the film lacks balance in dealing with a very controversial subject. Showing only the American Gov as the bad guys may win the hearts and minds of Hollywood critics but it won’t fill seats for long. Remember ‘Dead Man Walking’ tough subject matter great movie, too bad Rendition didn’t take clues from that movie.

Am I the only one who finds Reese’s shrill “Just tell me that he’s okay!!!!!!!” at the end of the trailer to be so grating and annoying that she should be stripped of her (undeserved in the first place) Academy Award?

Aww, the whole fun of the first National Treasure was that it was intoxicatingly silly. This one looks to be at least as silly, if not more so. I’ll definitely see it, and enjoy it for the cheese-fest that it is.

So, yes to a movie with Meryl and Jake. No to a movie with Nicholas Cage. I can understand that.

  • mmmm

Rendition looks good. And um, I think it’s a given that the Islamic Extremist are not so good. Nothing to ‘uncover’ there.

  • nunya

i agree, jarett – meryl could of given reese some tips on that scene…

“Rendition” will do well at the box office only because the media will constantly mention how Reese and Jake hooked up on the set. (A la ‘Mr and Mrs Smith’ and ‘The Break-up’).

Both trailers actually look pretty good.. I’ve been anticipating NT2 .. I loved the first one so I can’t see what they come up with in the second one. It just seems like a guaranteed hour and a half of entertainment
