Whoopi is the new 'View' moderator

Categories: Television, The View

Whoopi_lWell, The View just became your place to go if you want to hear someone impersonate Marlene Deitrich singing "Take Me Out To The Ballgame." As the studio audience feigned a few chuckles and collectively thought, Marlene who?, Whoopi Goldberg busted out that comic move soon after being introduced as the new “moderator” for The View, replacing Rosie O’Donnell. Just writing that sentence nearly makes me want to — well, not cry, but laugh sarcastically. Goldberg’s anointment was no big surprise — though The View milked the announcement for 45 minutes, ushering Whoopi on in the final segment. But it reminds us how much O’Donnell has been missed on the show, and how recent substitute guests such as Goldberg and Joan Rivers have been so bland and blah. Goldberg has been coasting for years now on her decades-old reputation for being, as she herself put it, “edgy.” She said this, mind you, while reassuring her new boss Barbara Walters that she would only be “a little edgy” on this show. How deflating. Whenever Goldberg has guested on The View, she’s mustered up some O’Donnell-like sassy attitude, but unlike Rosie, there’s no content to Goldberg’s sass — she doesn’t make riotously funny or trenchant or provocative statements. Given the fact that Whoopi has spent her recent time hosting a radio show, it’s pretty obvious she views The View as a nice, easy gig. Whoopi officially starts the day after Labor Day, Barbara said. Meanwhile, the other shoe is waiting to drop — who’ll be the permanent replacement for the long-absent Star Jones seat? Given the safe choice of Whoopi, I have a feeling Walters — who sure as heck doesn’t want to go through the tumult she did with O’Donnell — will go with someone nice and bland, like frequent guest panelist Sherri Shepherd. In the meantime, take me out to the ballgame, to the movies, to the library: anywhere I don’t have to watch the rest of the summer’s self-congratulation-fest The View will unfurl over the choice of Whoopi Goldberg. Nothing personal, Whoopi.

wow, is it 1991? whoopi goldberg hasn’t been relevant in years. yet another reason not to watch the view.

  • Chad

Although I like Whoopi, they should have went with Mo’Nique ( I would have perhaps watched then)

So disappointed Pop Watch isn’t hitting on the big View news of the day, re: Star Jones having gastric bypass. Yeah, that’s soooooo shocking. I was totally convinced she lost all that weight from diet and exercise.

  • lw

    now get rid of barbara.

  • Clementine

Like Rosie or not, she made The View DVR-worthy. I was rooting for Kathy Griffin… she’s edgy.

  • Blake

I personally do not like Whoopi, especially for The View. Let’s see how the rest of America Thinks.

Snore. I was rooting for Kathy Griffin, too. (Who won’t get the other “seat,” either.) Barbara Walters just instantly made her career irrelevant. No one will remember her “news” days. Some will remember as far back as, “what kind of tree would you be?” But most will remember when she really spiced up daytime with REAL talk and REAL topics when she hired Rosie (although she certainly didn’t know what she was getting.) And then we’ll all look and see how she quickly decided to reverse any kind of substance out of her show by selecting new cast members who’ll just bend to her celebrity-schmoozing and network power.
A shame. (And let’s all feel bad for Elizabeth, too. She may not have been as good at getting her points and proof out there, but she was alive when Rosie was there. I don’t think she’ll be the same without her.)

No new reason to record the View. I don’t see this change making it any more watchable. Whoopi is a fine, but predictable (dull), addition. But, hey, except for the all too short Rosie era, it’s been a dull show for a long time.

  • Stephanie Travitsky

Whoopi actually does make sense as the moderator, but she still needs to watch what she says and does when it comes to comments about race. She had a problem with Don Imus’s comment yet she once go Ted Danson to dress up as a minstrel. If that is not hypocrital, then I am not sure what is?

  • JK

No problem with the choice – Whoopie will do just fine and the show will continue. It worked well before Rosie go there and it will work well without her. Sure the flare-ups were much more common with Rosie on board, but you don’t need flare ups and dust ups to make it as a show.

  • DanOregon

Such an obvious choice. Too obvious. I’m sorry though, they really needed someone who has had some real world experience in the last 20 years.

  • PJ

Whoopi is the right kind of “edgy” for this show–she’s about as sharp as a butter knife on Delta. “The View” has gotten so dull it’s like a bunch of old ladies sitting around having tea. She’ll fit right in.

  • Stephanie

I’m not a Whoopie fan, I think the show needed a professional African American woman to take the slot. I would much rather have seen Rene Syler, Gayle King, Soledad O’Brien etc hosting the show. The view has too many “funny” co hosts.

  • Suzanne

Whoopi is not funny and is a boring choice. Seriously her last regular TV gig was on the Hollywood Squares.
Kathy Griffin would have been great. The only hope with Sherri is that she will bring enough Christianity to eliminate the need for Elisabeth to come back from her maternity leave.

  • EJ

I like Whoopi, but honestly, she’s just TOO. BORING. Bring on Sherri and Kathy!!

  • Aurelian

    I can’t say I’ve ever watched the View…but if Kathy Griffin was a co-host, I might start…

  • Fatima

Gotta go with the other comments here….the only way you could lure me back to this show is Kathy Griffin. I went out on an embarrassing limb last winter with my family when I admitted to setting a season pass for the show, but now I can safely say it has been deleted.

  • Paul

Whoopi has been pretty laid back on previous shows. I don’t think she will be nearly as compelling as Rosie. I would say Whoopi is the “safe choice.” They should go with someone edgier like Kathy Griffin. I would definitely watch every day with Kathy Griffin.

  • RLS

Good job, ABC. You have the opportunity to fill the “woman of color” slot with any number of sexy and funny ladies, and you choose this sexless ogre who hasn’t been funny for YEARS. The view is such a huge snooze now, and it will continue to be with this new “addition”.

  • Z

I committed to NEVER watch the view again after Rosie left…however, when it was teased that Kathy Griffin may replace her, I rescinded my commitment to the “Team Rosie” fight only because I knew in my heart Kathy is just as out spoken. Although I love Whoopie, she will not be nearly confrontation enough. The View’s days are numbered.

  • Ep Sato

I’m not that committed to this show, but do seem to recall agreeing with someone about how she’d be a good addition to the show. If so, thanks again Popwatch Genie!

  • Monty Ousley Weddell

The show going from Rosie to Whoopi is equivalent to “going from bad to worse” !!! There are hundreds of
    better qualified people who could
do a better job. Why do they continue
    to choose controversal anti-Americans!!!

  • dee

alright – I’ll try watching again ! Until the loud & rude starts ! I can watch & hear that at home !
    Good Luck Whoopie.

  • nathan

She should fit in well with the rest of those bloody morons.

  • Joe C

As I’ve said before, I am rarely home to watch the View, but now that Rosie ISN’T on, I will give it a shot(when I am home). I never liked her, and here’s hoping she stays out of the spotlight. Which isn’t likely, but whatever….

  • Mindy

No one could be worse than Rosie but Whoopi is close! Remember when she grabbed her croch when she was talking at a function??? She is trash and I won’t be tuning in!!

  • Melina

I think it’s an ok choice but I would’ve liked to see kathy or Sherri instead. They are both very funny. But I still miss Rosie.

  • To Monty

Rosie and Whoopi are NOT anti-Americans. Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.

  • Em Briley

Whoopie? Controversial? LATELY? Umm, no. Whoopie has been a holier-than-thou wet blanket each time she’s been on the show. I’m really disappointed.
I must disagree, though, with those who are kumping Shari under the “dull, safe” umbrella. Shari is a RIOT. She speaks openly about her philandering husband, she’s admitted she doesn’t believe in evolution, she’s made barbed shots at celebs. She’s a funny lady not afraid to speak her mind.
I just wish she wasn’t going to be weighed down by Whoopie (such a misnomer at this point). Honestly, when she assured Barbara that she would “only be a little eddgy” I laughed. Are you kidding? She’s so far from edgy, she’s completely spherical.
    Boooooo.

  • Eli

I think it’s funny that the only edgy person on the show will be Elizabeth.
