To Care or Not to Care: Backstreet's Back, alright?

Bsb_lThe Backstreet Boys, sans eldest member Kevin Richardson, will release a new album on Oct. 30, in honor of their 10th anniversary on label Jive, Billboard reports. The quartet — Nick Carter, Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough and AJ McLean — will shoot their first single, "Inconsolable," to radio on Aug. 27. If "Inconsolable" is anything like "Incomplete" (the video for which I still say featured the Best Dramatic Acting by a Boy Band in a Video. Ever.), I’ll give it one listen. I’m willing to go out on a limb and say Richardson was the expendable member — and also that it will be better than anything that comes out of VH1’s forthcoming Man Band reality series, teaming Chris Kirkpatrick (‘N Sync), Jeff Timmons (98 Degrees), Rich Cronin (LFO), and Bryan Abrams (Color Me Badd).

First of all, a big WTF to VH1’s “Man Band”. But I am so there…that is gonna be one FUNNY ASS show. Unintentional comedy at its finest.
Anywho, BSB is back? I’m torn. I absolutely ADORE them but them coming back sans Kevin is gonna feel kinda weird. I mean, me personally, I didn’t really care much for him but hey, he is still a BSBer. Oh well, let’s see how this turns out.
    Long live BSB!!!

Well crap. Kevin was the only one I found even remotely attractive. I never cared for their music–I always liked N Sync better.
Leave it to Vh1–they are beginning to specialize in celebrity trainwrecks for our entertainment–I love Surreal Life and Celebrity Fit Club for some reason (Screech is suck a d***!), and the Scott Baio show is ridiculously addictive. I will totally watch this.

Nick Carter was cute once upon a time before he succumbed to the curse of Paris Hilton but he never has seemed to fully recover from that fiasco. Was interesting watching his family’s show. Gotta love those fame-mongering parents, it always works out so good for the kids. Are you listening Dina?
Anyway, BSB had a couple of good songs. I’ll check it out before writing them off.

Wow do those guys look like a poor man’s version of NKOTB. Too bad none of these guys seems to have a more talented younger brother like Donny Wahlberg did. I’d say the best thing to come out of NKOTB was Marc Wahlberg…
As for Backstreet? Well, that story about one of the dudes going into rehab was pretty entertaining.
The boy band era seems pretty dead and buried, but why not give it a shot? The Monkees made an unexpected comeback thanks to Nick at Nite, maybe these fellas have some hope too?

Every time I listen to “Incomplete” (which is embarrassingly often), I attempt to recreate Nick Carter’s raw emotion at the gas station, but I never quite manage.

  • Kristen

YAY! Backstreet’s back! I wonder how they’ll sound without Kevin though- Boys II Men was never the same after their bass voice had to quit. Oh well, I’ll still listen. I’m sure the CD will be thrown on my Zune to add to their other CDs- and I’m equally sure I’ll be made fun of for it. Which I admit..is deserved. Sigh.

  • Todd

    Um Kristen…what’s a zune?

  • mary

I agree that Kevin was the best-looking one. He probably is not participating because he and his wife just had their first baby a couple of weeks ago. If that’s the reason, that makes him even sexier.

  • Sarah

I will always get excited for a Backstreet Boys cd. It’s been that way since the very first one came out. I could never choose between NSync and the Backstreet Boys, I loved them both!

  • Sarah

Oh, and Nick was by far the cutest Backstreet Boy back in the day, but he didn’t age too well, not like Justin anyways. Wow, I’m 26 and I still talk about them like I’m 16 again!

  • Jen

I am uberly excited about this album! I mean these guys were the originals of 90s boy bands and they’re the last ones left. You got to give them credit for that. I chose to care about the new BSB album. And by the way, you need to update your pic of them, they are way hotter now than they were back then!

  • JK

I personally can’t wait to hear it! If it weren’t for them I never would have gotten into my now lifelong interest in all different types of music. I’m glad to finally see an article mentioning them without making fun of them or their style of music.

  • sarah

They should have bowed out with dignity like N Sync. OR at least changed their name. I mean, Backstreet BOYS? Shoot Kevin probably HAD to leave because he’s almost 40 and didn’t want to participate in false advertising.

  • JuJuBee

    Backstreet’s BACK- ALright! LOL.
I am sad to say I am not a loyal BSB fan.. I jumped ship to NSYNC a long time ago. But I have to say this new single deserves a chance.. If Hey Baby and all the other crap can make it into daily rotation so can another BSB song. AND Vh-1 is my favorite… I can’t wait to see Man band..

  • hugmonster

Hey, I care. I love BSB because even though their music wasn’t deep, it was really enjoyable pop music. There are few groups out there who consistently put out music that makes me smile and sing along like BSB. I remember my friends making fun of BSB and “Incomplete”, but after a few weeks, they always sang along to it in the car. I can’t wait to hear the CD even though it will be different without Kevin. Is it August 27th (so I can hear “Inconsolable”) or October 30th yet?

  • cranky

There is not enough not caring in the whole world to adequately represent how much I do not care.

  • Brianna

Has anyone SEEN Nick Carter recently? The guy has lost almost 50 lbs! Frankly not bad before, he is GORGEOUS now. Whereas the Backstreet Boys were the only group I loved when I was a teenager, I’ve expanded to many MANY music groups since that time. But I always listen to BSB. Their harmonies are so wonderful and the songs so much fun.

  • Stephen

As a fan of R&B, I was hoping Nick would go solo. I mean, can you get any blacker? (Sry if that came out as racist, meant ti as a joke).

  • Houstonian Jen in Baltimore

    Stephen, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

  • Nuchy

Backstreet Boys always took themselves far too seriously even for a regular pop group, much less a boy band. And they’re boring. There really isn’t much demand for cheesy manufactured groups from the ’90s now, anyway.

  • Moni

Throwing in my “I care.” They aren’t a bubble-gummy manufactured group anymore. And a clip of Inconsolable is available online. As well as full versions of Happily Never After and Helpless When She Smiles. Just fyi, I never check back my comments nor do I check my email, so don’t ask me where to find the songs. Check any BSB fan pages or ask a die hard fan. I am sure a number of posters here have it or if you’re feeling naughty any p2p network.

  • FUP

Well, good for you Moni, you are so important you can just drop a turd and leave.

  • miv

I always thought their ballads were supreme pop cheese at its best! I will be one to listen to their new stuff just to get more karaoke material. Their up-tempo stuff always paled in comparison to NSync’s but their ballads were da bomb :)

  • Gillian

I’m a huge BSB fan! Always have been, always will be. I’m looking forward to the new album and think that they’ll be different, but fine without Kevin. He rarely sang lead and I’m sure their four part harmony will sound great. Say what you want about boy bands, but they can actually sing well and have put out some really solid pop songs over the years. I’m totally excited for their return! KTBSPA!

  • Chris

    Excellent one, FUP!!

  • Kate

Didn’t they already do Man Band before and didn’t it stink?

  • Sarah

You know what, I bought “Never Gone” on its first day in stores and was at the first show of their world tour in West Palm Beach. I may be 18, but I’m STILL getting this the day it comes out. Backstreet’s back, alright!

  • Dave

I’m totally psyched for this! I loved BSB, and n*sync, in high school, and will definitely check out this album. While I agree with miv that n*sync’s up tempo stuff surpassed BSB’s (but not the ballads, hello I Want it That Way), Larger Than Life remains one of the best boy band songs from that era. And, yes, I’m 25 years old and loving the nostalgia this post is eliciting!

  • Anonymous

Hey…if they need a fifth…how ’bout including the Carter sib…Aaron????? Ya Whooo Yi…

  • Stephanie T.

Oi! “New Kids on the block were a bunch of d-ks, LFO makes me sick, and Backstreets bland bandmates are old and moronic!”
