'Pirate Master' (and Captain Azmyth) cut adrift — finally!

Filed under: Television and tagged:

Azmyth_lI had high hopes for Pirate Master, but as the ten of you who read my weekly TV Watches know, the varying quality in episodes, especially early on, was enough to make me seasick. CBS has finally officially canceled the Mark Burnett reality show, and will now burn off the remaining episodes online. A new one will premiere on CBS.com every Tuesday. Yesterday’s saw the end of Captain Azmyth, the show’s finest competitor — and one of the most entertaining, thanks to the fake accent he acquired when he first took his post. In case you were one of the six million people still tuning in, here’s what went down on the Picton Castle last night.

With eight pirates left, the rules have changed: The captain no longer gets to elect two officers, he or she alone must black-spot two pirates for possible elimination, and he or she has the right to keep 100 percent of the recovered treasure. After the Captain Azmyth-led Black Crew lost the expedition, the Red Crew (bikini-clad Christa, dead-weight Kendra, former officers Jay and Ben) elected Christa the ship’s new captain. Jay once again proved he’s an evil bastard when he suggested to Christa that rather than give Kendra her $12,500 share of the $50,000 booty (which Christa had decided to split evenly), she give Kendra $2,500 and tell her that she’ll bid $10,000 on the royal pardon that Kendra had to sell. (The pardon, by the way, will no longer be in play after this week). Jay suggested Christa then not bet on the pardon, keep that ten grand for herself, and get the rest of the crew to cut Kendra adrift. Christa set the plan in motion, but apparently developed a conscience, because Azmyth took the ride on the raft of the shame instead.

I couldn’t get the final part of the episode to play on CBS’  site, and I’m kinda glad. According to the official recap, Kendra resorted to poetry in her defense at pirate’s court: "’My heart is here with my Captain and crew, breathing deep the possibility of treasure to be found,’ she reads. ‘The Black Spot does not cast a shadow, for I saw a red sky tonight, a sailor’s prediction of fair winds and good fortune.’" Please. At least make it rhyme.

Anyway, I’m pulling for Christa now, whose shown that she’s not only smart enough not to listen to Jay, but also to not look power hungry. (She asked each of the remaining crew who they wanted black-spotted, which took blame off her always-bare shoulders.) We’ll see if she’s still standing when PopWatch checks back in with Pirate Master in a month’s time — when the winner is revealed. We also look forward to reporting whether host Cameron Daddo breaks another sweat.

As much as this show bombed, I still watched it. What can I say – I’m a reality show junkie. I’ll continue to watch it on-line. It’s a shame they couldn’t have mixed it up more early-on. Maybe it would have had a chance.

thank you, me and the other fan were wondering if there would be a requiem for this show.

You had high hopes for Pirate Master?

It was just getting really good! Being Canadian, CBS won’t let me watch it online and the Canadian station that carried it hasn’t made up its mind yet about whether it’ll be showing the remaining episodes on its site and I am beyond frustrated. What’s so important ratings-wise in the middle of summer that they couldn’t air the last esisodes at 10pm on a Tuesday? C’mon! Thanks for still doing the TV Watch and meeting my need for knowing what happened.

How true are the rumors that John has a lawsuit and that is why the show is on ‘hold’? Can’t find a real answer. I totally loved PM!!!

I’m bummed that hte show was cancelled. it was starting to get good. CBS shouldn’t have pulled it mid-season, just go ahead and finish it out but not renew for next year. didn’t they learn anything from the outcry when the same thing happened to last comic standing with just an episode or two to go?
btw, i hadn’t heard about john trying to sue. whats that all about?

How disappointing that this show was cancelled and what really is annoying now that it is on-line is that we Canadian’s can’t view it as it is only on-line for the U.S. fans. Boo hoo! I hope that Mindi Bierly and Popwatch Blog continues the recap as it is the only way we Canadian’s can find out what happened next.

I’ll bet Cheryl’s suicide at the end of July has the production’s lawyers in a frenzy — no wonder the show is not showing on a major network (CBS) and the online “airings” keep crashing! What a shame for the fans to lose the opportunity to watch the stunning shots of Dominica on our big-screen TVs! Shame on you, CBS.

Does anyone know if there is going to be the promised recap of the season/series finale as promised in the above post. I did enjoy PM and watched each episode online…hoping for a witty/informative recap from Mandi.

  • Diana

  • Diana

Mandi – where’s the final update?? Still hoping for your witty overview of this train wreck of a show! C’mon, the ten of us are waiting!
