Best Love Songs Ever: What did we miss?

Categories: Music

Haven’t seen EW.com’s gallery of the Best Love Songs Ever? You don’t know what you’re missing. (Links to hours upon hours of videos!) It’s got the Cure, The Beatles, Elton John, and a picture of Cyndi Lauper that calls to mind Stevie Nicks dipped in cherry Kool-Aid.

What would you put on your ultimate Love Songs playlist? Excluding the obvious choice: "My Humps," because we all know that should’ve been No. 1… post up, below.

Didn’t this list come out like, two or three years ago?

Here’s my ten fave love songs:
    1) Dorothy Moore–Misty Blue
    2) Al Green–How Can you Mend a Broken Heart
    3) Stevie Wonder–Ribbon in the Sky
    4) Rod Stewart–The First Cut is the Deepest
    5) Smokey Robinson–Oooh Baby Baby
    6) Dolly Parton–I will Always Love you
    7) Mariah Carey–Love Takes Time 8) Led Zeppelin–Tangerine
    9) Michael Jackson–Got to Be There
    10) Eagles–Best of My Love
These songs can warm anyone’s heart. Slo Jam time, everyone!

  • Elizabeth

That was pretty half-hearted (no pun intended).
My vote: Whenever You Come Around by Vince Gill… or practically anything by him. I cry everytime I hear that song.

All of the blgos suck today. Write something about Lindsay Lohan and Age of Love, already!

  • Jayel

    Crazy Love – Van Morrison
    Black – Pearl Jam
Just Like Honey – Jesus & Mary Chain
    Closer – Nine Inch Nails
    Kathy’s Song – Simon & Garfunkel
Also, “Bad” is a much better U2 love song than “All I Want Is You.”

I meant, all of the blogs suck today. Write something interesting!

Well since “Let’s Stay Together” is on the list an it is a song about a relationship that has a problem, I would have to go with three other problematic love songs:
Must Have got Lost- J Giles Band
    I Need You- America
    Precious to Me- Phil Seymour
Eventhough they are about aching hearts, they are still about love. Plus the summary for Seymours song was though he and the girl broke up he can’t get her out of his heart.
    As for missed love songs:
    Lost in Love- Air Supply
Cheesy, true. But this song is an IPod staple
    My Sharona
    The Knack
    It’s a punk love song
    Love My Way
    Psychadelic Furs
    Space Age Love Song
    Flock of Seagulls
    If You Leave
    Orchestral Manuvers in the Dark
    More than This
    Roxy Music
    To Be With You
    Mr. Big

  • Charlie

I have to admit, there’s a few songs that I would’ve liked to see on the list — “Waiting in Vain” by Bob Marley and the Wailers, “Ain’t No Sunshine When She’s Gone” by Bill Withers, “Woman” by John Lennon, and “Lovesong” by the Cure all make the cut for me. I was so glad to see “As” make the cut — I want that playing on my wedding day!

  • Joe C

Hey, Anonymous: Here’s the latest on Lindsey Lohan: She is hiding out in the downtown Pizza Hut here in Tampa, FL. I’ll get back to you on what she ordered….

  • Stephanie Travitsky

    Oh I forgot:
    True
    Spandau Ballet
    I got You
    Split Enz
    Something So Strong
    Crowded House

  • Stephanie Travitsky

Joe C.: “The First Cut” was a Cat Stevens song, but Stewarts was the better version.

  • kats

Most egregious miss for me is “Love Song” by The Cure.
Others that mean a lot to me but weren’t included:
    “Thank You” Led Zeppelin
“When The Night Comes” Joe Cocker
    “Amazed” Lone Star
    “Bargain” The Who
“Not Enough Time” & “Mystify” INXS
    “Because The Night” 10,000 Maniacs
    “Crazy” Icehouse
    “Everlong” Foo Fighters
“Forever In Blue Jeans” Neil Diamond
“I’d Die Without You” PM Dawn
“If You Could Only See” Tonic
“The Night Is Still Young” Billy Joel
    “Original of The Species” U2
    “Satisfaction Guaranteed” The Firm
    “Still Remains” Stone Temple Pilots
“Thought I’d Died and Gone to Heaven” Bryan Adams
    “Time and Tide” Basia
“We Can’t Deny It” Lisa Stansfield
“Wrapped Around Your Finger” The Police
“Keep On Loving You” REO Speedwagon
    “Still The One” Orleans
    “Trip Through Your Wires” U2
“Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy” Sammy Hagar
“Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover” Sophie B. Hawkins (unrequited, I know…)
    “Head Over Feet” Alanis Morisette
“Don’t Let Go (Love)” En Vogue

  • Broadway Baby

I’m just a big fan of happy love songs – most were included on the top list (never agreed with a EW list more) but of course there were a few glaring omissions:
Everlong by the Foo Fighters (the happiest angst-ridden love song ever)Here, There and Everywhere by the Beatles
How Deep is Your Love by the Bee Gees
    Everyday by Buddy Holly
I’ve Been Waiting by Matthew Sweet

  • furry_tom

RE: Didn’t this list come out like, two or three years ago?
Yeah, it did. I remember because it was generated by reader’s suggestions and I was excited because I’d nominated “God Only Knows” and “Ring of Fire” (should have been “Walk the Line”, I know better these days) and they both made the list. I also suggested “Heroin” (because it’s a song about Lou Reed’s love of Heroin) but for some reason that didn’t make it.

  • Ummm

How about ANY love song by Mariah Carey…take your pick of ‘We Belong Together,’ ‘Love Takes Time,’ ‘Dream Lover,’ ‘Fantasy,’ the list could go on and on.

  • rhonda

aaaah you have forgotten to include the incredible miss mariah carey- amazing vocalist AND songwriter. my favorite love song by her- Always Be My Baby. but any would do! she deserves to be on that list!

  • jayel

Hey kats – nicely ecletic list, one comment. If you like 10,000 Maniacs’ version of “Because the Night,” you should definitely check out the Patti Smith version or the Bruce Springsteen original.

  • ericalina

could not agree more with the top choice, but having beyonce anywhere near that top 25 is ridiculous.

  • Polly

Um…you didn’t include anything, I mean ANYTHING, by Van Morrison????? Sweet Thing? I Want to Roo You? Have I Told You Lately? Days Like This? Warm Love? And It Stoned Me? Moondance? Into the Mystic? Crazy Love? Tupelo Honey? Beside You?
My god, this reveals a major lack of pop music knowledge not to choose at least one thing by the master.

  • Faris Najor

Seriously, you just missed ones of the best love songs of all time. the first 4 on my list are overplayed, but they’re still great. The last one on my list is a classic love song, how could you really miss it?
“Everything I do (I do it for you)”, Bryan Adams
“Have you ever really loved a woman”, Bryan Adams
“I’ll make love to you”, Boyz II Men
“My heart will go on”, Celine Dion
    “In my Place”, Coldplay
    “I alone”, Live
“If you’re not the one”, Daniel Bedingfield

  • Ruben

In conjunction with the just released Absolute Garbage, I’d like to include an extremely overlooked song by an overlooked band.
Garbage’s “You Look So Fine” is love, lust, desire, and heartbreak rolled into 5 minutes of one of Shirley’s most passionate performances. It’s gut-wrenching.

  • Snooks

    Ummmmmmmmmm…
Angel Eyes – The Jeff Healy Band
Perfect song, kinda cheesy but an awesome love song. So good, in fact, that I still love it even though it was playing when I kissed my ex-boyfriend for the first time.
Also, Making Memories of Us by Keith Urban. Great, simple love song. The song tells it like it is…
Polly, Into The Mystic – Van Morrison…great song!!!

  • TSD

The fact that y’all left off anything by Luther Vandross is a crime unto itself. “Here and Now” is the best ever. Also, I can think of a better Beyonce song: “Dangerously in Love”. Every person I know who has heard that song loves it. It’s a testament to true love.

  • idigress

I was excited to see that I had most of these songs on my iPod, including the top 3 songs. I made a “On-The-Go” playlist from the songs on the list.
My all-time favorite love song is “Adore” – Prince. Goodness, it is just so fantastic. I added that to my playlist as well!

  • Christina

My favorite love song is “Runaway” by The Corrs. I’d put Mariah’s “Always Be My Baby”, Alan Jackson’s “Remember When”, and Allison Krauss’ “Nothing At All” on the list too.

  • mike

No one has mentioned “Never Tear Us Apart” by INXS or “One” by U2. Why?

  • Jessica

Not just the words, but the music is encompassing as well.
    ———————————
    “Annie’s Song” by John Denver
    You fill up my senses
Like a night in a forest
    Like a mountain in springtime
Like a walk in the rain
Like a storm in the desert
    Like a sleepy blue ocean
    You fill up my senses
    Come fill me again
    Come let me love you
Let me give my life to you
Let me drown in your laughter
Let me die in your arms
    Let lay down beside you
Let me always be with you
    Come let me love you
    Come love me again
Let me always be with you
    Come let me love you
    Come love me again

  • Morgan

Everlong by Foo Fighters and Never Tear Us Apart my INXS

  • Martha

Stephanie, “More than This” by Roxy Music was in the 26-50 ranking that came out yesterday. All in all I thought this was a pretty good list. The fact that you guys included “There is a Light That Never Goes Out” in the top 50 gave it instant Martha cred.

  • Joe C

Thanks, Stephanie, I knew Cat Stevens had the original ‘First Cut’ but as you said, Rod Stewart’s is better. During lunch, I thought of some other songs, and this is my last list, I promise:
    1 Otis Redding—Try A Little Tenderness
    2) Beatles–Golden Slumbers
    3) Elvis Presley–Suspicious Minds
    4) Rolling Stones– Dead Flowers(For the TRUE romantic). Who could resist a song with line: And I won’t forget to put roses on your graaaaaave.
    5) Van Morrison–Tupelo Honey
    6) Gladys Knight–The Way we were
    7) Fleetwood Mac–Landslide 8) Queen–Love of My Life
    9) Karyn White–Superwoman
    10) Rick James and Teena Marie–Fire and Desire…
