Fox announced yesterday that the Oct. 7 edition of The Simpsons will be (well, they didn’t put it this way, but I will) a pure comic-geek bliss-out: The plot is all about our beloved Comic Book Guy (pictured), who gets some competition in Springfield from a new store, "Coolsville Comics & Toys," run by "hipster" Milo, voiced by Jack Black. What’s even more hipster about this news is that the episode will feature cartoon versions of guest stars Art Spiegelman (Pulitzer Prize-winning creator of Maus), Eightball creator Dan Clowes, and probably the most revered living comics writer, at least among the superhero set: Watchmen creator Alan Moore. No word on whether the voluble, prolific, control-freak Moore will insist on writing his own lines and thereby expand the episode to a special two-hour Simpsons…

Wow. Who cares about Jack Black when Art Spiegelman, Daniel Clowes and Alan Moore are dropping by? I loved the “Ghost World” comics (in Clowes “Eightball” series) and “Watchmen” and “Maus” are perhaps the greatest comics ever written. Wow. I, for one, can’t wait.

What’s with the periods?
mike, the periods create a pause between each word, so you sound more like Comic Book Guy when you say it.
This sounds like a fantastic episode to me. I hope it lives up to its promise.
Mike: check out YouTube for Comic Book Man from the Simpsons (that’s how he talks, in periods). I’m not sold on this being the Best.Episode.Ever, mostly because I’ve kinda given up on the show. It used to be a lot funnier. Now I just wanna watch Matlock!
I remember when they were talking about this last year (probably when they were recording the voices). I could’ve sworn there were more voices, including Stan the Man.

Oh, Daniel, you are right, that would be cool. Y the last man is easily one of the best titles of the last five or six years. And if Jcarla’s right, it’ll only be cooler to have yet another reason to dig on Stan Lee.
Please tell me that this means at least parts of the episode will be drawn/inspired by these artists.

True, as far as non fantasy comics go, Moore pales in comparison to Clowes and co.
Don’t forget that Alan Moore was also a comic artist even though he’s won no Eagle awards for his work or done much (if anything) since the mid-eighties. He wrote and drew Maxwell the Magic Cat comic strip under the name Jill de Ray. And under the name Curt Vile he did Roscoe Moscow and Pedro Henry’s Axel Pressbutton story “Stars my Degredation” and a few one-offs like Nutter’s Ruin. If Alan Moore’s character is drawn in 10,000 stippled dots, you can bet it’s some kind of tribute to his early drawing career. (Though my guess is that it’ll be a Dave Gibbon’s tribute by Simpsons’s staff artists).
