I’ve got to hand it to Maroon 5: It’s not every day a mainstream pop act releases a single about gleefully murdering a cheating lover’s hulking boy-toy. And while I’m not an advocate for indiscriminate gun violence, somehow "Wake Up Call" plays as good, catchy fun — mainly because the grim lyrical content is paired with the band’s signature combination of jaunty guitars, shiny, happy synth lines, and the kind of melody you want to crank up on the car stereo and belt enthusiastically — even though you’ll probably end up mumbling the verses. True, it’s all a little too CSI: Miami when the sound of a thumping left ventricle answers frontman Adam Levine’s question, "Is his heart still beating?" But so what? If corporate radio is going to insist on playing the same nine songs every hour, they could do a lot worse than "Wake Up Call." But don’t take my word for it; listen for yourself after the jump, then give your own snap judgment in the comments section below.

It stinks…
Kelly Clarkson is better!!!!
Actually Slezak, that’s one of my favorite tracks from the new album. The other is Infactuation. Ummm, thanks for your honest opinion. I still have to listen to Kelly (I bought it but haven’t devoted some time to listen). Give me some tracks that you liked!
Unlistenable pablum. More of the same Matchbox 20/Third Eye Blind/Gin Blossoms ‘product’ that commercial, terrestrial radio continues to shove down our thoats. Slezak…PLEASE dig deeper. There is always interesting, different music being released. This sort of corporate flag waving is tacky and unconvincing. Why not just extol the virtues of Nickelback, Creed or further American Idol output?
At first listen, I didn’t like it. At a second listen, I too fell for it even though I am not a fan of murder. It is like loving the movie/musical Chicago even though it is about two murdering women. Still good stuff.
Maroon 5’s latest cd is one of the BEST cd releases of the year, and thats coming from someone who actually STILL does purchase music weekly, whether it be from Best Buy or iTunes. To the people complaining about Maroon 5, when was the last time you went and out PURCHASED music before you deemed it unlistenable?? I can’t wait for them to hit Philly in October for their tour, i’m actually considering flying to see em in FL as well! After seeing their performance of this track on mtv.com, I’m guessing there is going to be a remix featuring Eve somewhere down the line, since they’re now labelmates through Interscope Records. Michael you got me all excited thinking this was your Snap Judgement for their new video, I’ve been rocking out to this song since May!
I love the new Maroon 5 album, but I’m disappointed that this is the new single. I would love to hear either “Little of Your Time” or “If I Never See Your Face Again” as a single. “Wake Up Call” is not memorable nor does it sound as interesting as other tracks on the album.
Very catchy! Thanks.
do u frequent perezhilton.com much??? please don’t bring that ‘first’ thing here, it gets a little grating after a while.
along with “makes me wonder”, this is basically the only other OBVIOUS hit from the new CD. you know this one will be a HUGE radio hit, which is good, becausae there may be trouble after this one to find another bonafide hit. now, that’s just my opinion, but i do thoroughly enjoy “wake up call”, but how will they do the video? we’ll see.
“Goodnight Goodnight” will be HUGE if they actually release it as a single. Very much in the same vein as “She Will be Loved”, and honestly this cd should have a nice shelf life, maybe not as long as SONGS ABOUT JANE, but if you’ll notice, successful artists have been squeezing 5 singles out of cds as of late. Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado, PCD & I’m interested to see if Interscope is going to release another Fergie single. All but Timberlake are on Interscope associated labels & since that’s Maroon 5’s new home, expect to see them work the hell outta this record! “Wake Up Call” didn’t seem the most obvious choice to me as the 2nd single, but after following up a monster hit like “MAKES ME WONDER”, I think they were going for a shot in the arm, rather than a full blown hit, like “GOODNIGHT GOODNIGHT” or “IF I NEVER SEE YOUR FACE AGAIN” could be. But trust, this album will have multiple single releases.
I prey Fergie’s record company will release “Clumsy.” I swear, if I could run some of these people’s careers, they’d be that much more richer, which means I’d be taking that much more of their money. I think the record execs should have some website where fans vote for what single should be released next. It’d be awesome, and then they could say they are ‘giving the people what they want.’
GREAT SONG! My favorite on the cd.
I’ve been waiting for this single to hit. It’s my favorite song on the CD. Now, as long as my local radio will play it…

Stephen and Slezak, i tried hitting you up last night on the new J.Lo item about the new singles from Fergie and Timbaland. Fergie’s next single is indeed “Clumsy”, and Timbaland’s next single is going to be the ballad with rockers One Republic, “Apologize”! GREAT NEWS!!! Also, has anyone seen the clip for “Wake Up Call” yet?? Great visual for a great song! Adam looks sexy & sleazy as ever!!!
