About that Fugees reunion...

Categories: Music

Fugees_lIf you love The Score ("Fu-la-la-laah!"), you’ve probably spent the last couple of years wondering when the Fugees (pictured, back in the day) were gonna get back together for real. After all, they were pretty good playing Dave Chappelle’s Block Party back in 2004. But now, courtesy of Pras (at right), we have a better sense of when to expect the reunion: Never!

Pras — who’s got a documentary coming out on August 24 called Skid Row, about his experiences living as a homeless guy for a couple days — filled in Billboard: “We went in the studio and recorded a couple records that were incredible. But, to put it nicely, it’s dead. Me and [Wyclef Jean, at left], we were on the same page, but Lauryn [Hill, center] is in her zone, and I’m fed up with that s—. Here she is, blessed with a gift, with the opportunity to rock and give and she’s running on some bulls—? I’m a fan of Lauryn’s but I can’t respect that."

Too bad all around, huh? No word from Clef or Ms. Hill, so you’ll have to speculate on who’s being self-serving or obstructionist, or on when, if ever, we might hear the couple of tracks that are in the can.

The Billboard article also mentions Pras’ new solo record thru Sony/BMG called “Experience” to be released before the end of the year, and Wyclef’s new single “Sweetest Girl” Feat. Akon, Nia,& Lil’ Wayne is currently streaming on AOl Music under new songs, with his new disc to be released in the Fall. Its truly a shame Lauryn Hill can’t play nice with others. Even her “Lose Myself” track from the Surf’s Up soundtrack this summer wasn’t half bad! As long as she’s not releasing anymore Unplugged albums, I think we’ll be fine, but as for that Fugees Reunion, maybe to celebrate the 15th anniversary of “The Score” seems more likely?

I’m sad and a little worried for Lauryn…but after hearing that god awful song Pras did where he sampled U2, I don’t think he is the position to judge her!

IMHO, Lauren Hill suffered some sort of breakdown she’s not recovered from. Her unplugged album is one of the worst follow ups to a hit album in recent memory. As for the Fugees reunion, their track from a year or two back sounded like a “we want the 1990’s to return” callback more than a new hit single. I could almost smell the cigar smoke and hear the chants for “four more years of President Bill Clinton” in the background of their last single.
That said, a reformed fugess that grew even more than the solo albums done by Wyclef would make their return worth a listen.
And Pras? He’ll always be a ghetto superstar to me.
PS I promise to stop commenting after six PBRs in the future…
