The biggest Emmy snubs

Beckinewton_lI’m actually relatively happy at the moment. Perhaps because I don’t watch 24, Lost, Battlestar Galactica, or Friday Night Lights — all of which failed to receive Outstanding Drama Series Emmy nods this morning. (Check out the full list of nominees here.) I personally would’ve put Brothers & Sisters in Grey’s Anatomy’s slot. However, I humbly accept that surprise and well-deserved Boston Legal love in the category (its first time!) and say thank you, TV Academy.

PopWatch — and EW’s Nicholas Fonseca, especially— would like to express our condolences to Ugly Betty’s Becki Newton (pictured), whose fine work as receptionist Amanda went unrecognized in the comedy supporting actress category. We were hoping she’d inherit Megan Mullally’s  funniest-hag-on-TV slot. Maybe next year. PopWatch’s Mike Slezak also notes the absence of love for Newton and wonders why there was no recognition for The Office’s John Krasinski or any nominations at all for the CW, save for a sound editing nod for Smallville.

While you’re waiting for EW’s TV critic Gillian Flynn to weigh in on the good and bad of this morning’s list, tell us the omissions that have you fuming.

UPDATE: Gillian’s reaction is in and she’s got your back on The Wire.

Let me be the first to weigh in here…The Wire. The Wire. The Wire.
The absence of any nominations makes the rest of the drama nominations a bit of a joke.

  • jason

the only 2 shows i watch are “ugly betty” and “american idol”. becki shoulda got some love, but at least america and vanessa were nominated. but now, they have to WIN!! and of course my girl laurie metcalf was nominated for crazy carolyn on housewives. she HAS to win that. the sopranos can make a drama sweep i could care less, but betty better reign supreme come emmy night.

  • Heather

I tend to always fume when it’s obvious that entire networks are ignored. The CW, while majorly flawed, would turn out more quality shows if those quality shows (or actors/actresses) they do have would get recognized. The same for many cable stations that produce original shows. Then again, FOX back in the day got recognition for pushing the envelope. It didn’t often create great results, but when something worked, it really worked. The CW occasionally tries something new but for the most part panders to the lowest common denominator and hopes for ratings.

  • Fry

The fact that Friday Nights Lights should have swept this year’s Emmy Awards and was only nominated for direction and casting is a crime! A crime I say!! Sad proof that no one was watching.

  • Amanda

The Emmy’s proved once again that they are a joke. No FNL is absolutely ridiculous. The show itself and Connie Britton were unbelievably deserving. The fact that it got no major nod’s hurts.
And no Michael C. Hall for Dexter? Crazy.

  • Carrie

The only show I was concerned about getting nominations was ‘The Office.’ While I wish John Krasinsk had been nominated, congrats to Steve Carell, Jenna Fischer, and Rainn Wilson.

  • Heather

The Wire. The Wire. The Wire. The Wire. The Wire. The Wire. The Wire. The Wire. The Wire. I’m glad to see the FX Network creeping in a bit but boy does the Emmys have a loooooooooooooooong way to go toward recognizing real quality and talent.

  • Barbara

Why all the love for Grey’s Anatomy? I don’t get it as GA is a bunch of pretentious c**p. And no love for Friday Night Lights? Kyle Chandler & Connie Britton were robbed. An outrage, a travesty, brutally disappointing.

  • Mozz

I’ve watched boston legal, and it may be cute that it got a nomination; why nominate an obvious loser for the award when you could nominate a competitive show… Lost, Friday Night Lights, Dexter and Battlestar Galactica school Boston Legal any day of the week. Sorry Mandi, but Boston Legal, not even in the same league.

  • Elaine

Sopranos will likely sweep all of it’s categories, as it mostly should. Micheal Imperioli deserves to win. Overall, pretty happy. I would have replaced several nods for Grey’s (Sandra and Chandra can stay) and DH (except for Laurie Metcalf and Dixie Carter)and anything for 2.5 men, but kinda happy. Just hope that the Office wins all of it’s noms.
Still disappointed about Jon C. McGinley, but as long as Braff gets no love, that makes it somewhat better.

  • Lauren

While I’m disappointed Jack Coleman didn’t get a nom, I can’t really argue when both Terry O’Quinn and Michael Emerson both got them. There were not two more spectacular supporting performances on television last year than those two.
Very disappointed though that Michael C. Hall, Dexter and Elizabeth Mitchell weren’t nominated.

  • cRAIG

i don’t know why i even bother. i haven’t watched the Emmys in years. and all it takes, year in and year out, is seeing the nominations to remind me why (and make me really mad). Boston Legal? are they kidding? no Wire, but Boston Legal?!? they’re actually serious. and what a shock that The Sopranos get a dozen nominations: tired, worn out, and five years past its prime…

  • Lynny

They did pretty well on the comedy, but the Drama stuff is mostly a joke. FNL and The Wire are shows that stay with you. I am still worried about Randy in that group home. Connie Britton is so amazing and her speech to her daughter about having sex too early is one I plan to use in a few years on mine. Shame on the emmys. (But Yeah Jenna Fischer!)

  • Yuck

Ok, Rachel Griffiths probably got some Emmy love because of Six Feet Under, but Callista Flockheart was amazing this season on B&S, particularly in her scenes with Sally Field and deserved a nomination.

  • Cassie

Trade Connie Britton for Sally Field! It’s like they throw an Emmy nomination at every Oscar winner on TV. And no John Krasinski? So so sad.

  • Ronda

    No Wire, No Justice

  • jay

Teri Hatcher deserved a nomination alongside Felicity Huffman for Best Actress in a Comedy Series. I’m sorry, but she was outstanding this season.

  • Sadie

I, too, wish that John Krasinski and Becki Newton would have landed nominations. It’s a shame there is no “Ensemble Cast” award, as The Office and Ugly Betty would be mudwrestling over that one.
I was thinking Lost should replace Grey’s in the Drama category. And perhaps the biggest snub is that of Elizabeth Mitchell on Lost for best supporting actress, while THREE actresses from Grey’s got the nod. Disappointing.

  • Emacb

Yeah for Masi, Jenna, Neil, T.R., Tina, America and Vanessa, but where the hell were Kyle and Connie (and FNL in general) and Michael and Becki from UB. And please explain to me why Katie Heigel from GA got nominated for this season when her character was so bad (I don’t blame her, I blame the writers, but still–why the nom?). I won’t even start on my rant about how my Gilmore Girl Lauren was ignored or how Kristen from Veronica Mars was too.

  • Ben

For the first time in years I have no complaints (and I’ve def never “fumed” about the Emmys. You can’t take them seriously) although it’s a shame that Lauren Graham was snubbed for the 7th time for Gilmore Girls (to be honest, I stopped watching after season 3 so watev).

  • Gilmore

Where’s Lauren Graham? For seven seasons, she made Lorelai Gilmore one of the most fully realized characters on television, often must effective when she wasn’t delivering an astonishing amount of dialogue unparalleled on any other show. I would also like to have seen nominations for Kelly Biship or Kristen Bell, but we all know how this goes–no love for the CW come awards time.

  • Mozz

Here’s a snub for you, for the entire season, the watercooler conversation where i live and work, has been around the plot twists of Ugly Betty.. the son is the daugther!!! and quoting the lines all day long, and yet, no WRITING nomination, for the writer that makes us laugh every week. I just don’t get it!

  • Surafel

Without the Wire or Friday Night Lights, the drama category is a joke.

  • Rose

Yeah for Minnie Driver! She is brilliant on The Riches. When in the world will Battlestar get the love it deserves!?

  • ally

agree with Emacb – lauren graham was snubbed big time, this season obviously wasn’t the shows best, but she was always on her A game.
Desperate housewives is the worst thing on tv, I still find it unbelievable that anyone watches it – and to call it a Comedy is a comedy in itself.
Very glad for Tina, Jenna and Rainn! all of whom are actually funny on funny shows (unlike DH)

  • CoughBarkchew

I have to knock on all the Emmy voters doors and beat them all with a bag of oranges! The Wire? Come on! And no love for Tyra Banks? She’s been acting as if we care about her for years now.

  • Chris

I guess this proves my theory that the people who vote actually HATE television. Boston Legal? Really? I guess these are the same people who though that Mad About You was one of the top 5 comedies in a given year. Lost has its best year and gets nothing? BSG will never get love. If the CW gets nothing Sci-Fi can give up that dream. Dexter is no where on the list? Wow…way to look outside the box Emmy voters. Seriously, look at the drama’s and tell me those are the best 5 on tv right now…please. Yet another reason NOT to watch the Emmy’s.

  • Louise

No Becki Newton nomination. No Justice!

  • Clem

Definitely disappointed that John Krasinski didn’t get nominated; his facial expressions alone earned him a nod.

  • Brian Z

Where’s the Wire?! I would love a ton of others but seriously, The Wire is a complete beast of a show and it’s absence only makes the awards look weak and uninspired.
