This show was unwatchable, lowest common denominator programming. The modern day ‘Matlock’. Patinkin is excruciating. As abrasive as David Caruso.
He may already be labeled as “difficult”, but we have no idea what happened so calling his behavior unprofessional is a little harsh. I think it was the smartest thing he could have done. That show is so awful and violent that it was the best move possible.
Not tuning in this season. Mandy was ONLY reason I watched. He made the terrible writing bearable. Scenes without him are painful. Even Moore’s hotness isn’t enough for me to tune in. My prediction, the series won’t survive from this loss. See you on the next one Mandy!
I read they were planning to write his character off anyway, and he probably didn’t like it, especially since he does get top billing on the show. And when he left Chicago Hope, he did return in guest spots a few times later in the series. It’s a shame, because I really liked the way his character and the character of Reid developed on the show.
It’s great that networks are screwing with good shows or dropping them entirely. I watch too much TV and they are helping me break the habit. Keep up the good work!

I think that the show will be nothing without him and probably fail. He was the main character as far as I am concerned
According to the official statement from Exec. Producer Ed Bernero, http://criminalmindsfanatic.blogspot.com/
Mandy simply didn’t show up. For a week.
I used to be a big fan of his. Now I’m full-on cheerleading for the show to survive and thrive without him.
Maybe he just got tired of saying those stupid quotations that open and close every show. Or else he was offered the lead in another Broadway musical.
i’ll miss “Gideon” ~ at least we still have Shemar Moore! was anyone a fan of the fox show “millenium”? can’t remember the name of the lead actor, but someone like that I could totally see taking MP’s place. Kate Mulgrew is a good suggestion, too.
If I were to look at this as if Mandy Patinkin were just a person rather than a “famous singer/actor,” I’d immediately suspect that there’s some mental issue going on. Perhaps manic depression, as DanOregon suggested, or maybe more likely severe “regular” depression of the non-bipolar variety. Maybe the reason he’s quit a couple of long-running intensely scheduled jobs over the years is that he has to for his own sanity.
Or, as many others have suggested, maybe he’s a prima donna and a jerk. I just think maybe there’s a less superficial cause.
I know someone who worked with Mandy Patinkin and he says that Mandy is the biggest jerk he has every worked with and very high maintenance. When I heard the news that he quit the show by just not showing up, I kind of laughed because it figures. He’s very talented but I don’t think the show is that great to begin with. It’s no big loss to me.
I’ll miss Mandy, but feel the show can continue with a replacement. The reference to Millennium was a good suggestion – Lance Henriksen was the actor and would be a good fit. For a female replacement, I think Ally Walker (formerly of Profiler) would work.
It was so obvious that he was reading his lines from Cue Cards and generally being lazy and phoning it in. Now the rest of the cast can shine! Good Riddance!
Granted, I haven’t watched the show for ages, but I thought it was a pretty feeble, by-the-numbers waste of time.
Mandy is a brilliant performer…his work on Chicago Hope ties with Andre Braugher on Homicide as the best TV dramatic acting of the 90s…as Criminal Minds did absolutely nothing for him.
