You know you're getting old when...

Father_lYou may recall a PopWatch Confessional where I admitted that I knew what number the Hallmark Channel is on my cable. If so, you won’t be surprised to hear that I was thrilled to read this headline in Variety yesterday:

Hallmark sets impressive line-up
Network commissions 30 original pics for ‘08

Unfortunately, I kept reading.

"Hallmark’s target demo is adults 25-54, but skewed toward the older end of that range. A detailed Magna Global report two weeks ago said that the average age of people who watched Hallmark’s primetime schedule from October through May was 63, making it the second-oldest cable network, behind Fox News, which averaged 65-plus." Seriously? I haven’t felt this old* since I stopped going to concerts that are standing only. (Wait, more recently, I watched The Sound of Music and for the first time, wondered if I’d be woman enough to help Captain von Trapp and his seven children flee Austria.) Anyone else feeling old today?

Haha!!! I’m 22 and have a wicked crush on Captain von Trapp!!!! So sexy.

I think that I just proved that I am old last night. My Mom and I went to see a free concert given by Tommy James. The opening acts were Johnny Maestro and Jay Black. After hearing James live, clearly it seemed as if he was on the wrong ticket. Maestro and Black have a more mature vocal and James sounded really raw. He belonged on a ticket with Lou Reed. Right there I recalled being a pre-teen listening to The Pretenders, The Jam, and Elvis Costello. I can’t believe that I am 31 and seeing Squeeze in two weeks.

At work, me and my co-worker are always messing with this guy who’s 19 but swears he’s older (or as he likes to say “I’m 32 stuck in a 19 years old body.” Poor him).
Anywho, recently, we were talking about “Fresh Prince of Bel Air” and the theme song. And here he is coming around the corner talking about how he used to watch the show when he was a kid. Granted, this is obviously true given that the show is on syndication like EVERYWHERE. But that didn’t stop me and my smart-ass mouth. I was like “Boy, were you even BORN when that show came out?” That stung him but funny enough, it stung me, too! Because when that show 1st came out, I was 9/10. I’m now 26. Lordy, I was feeling some kinda senior citizen-ish the rest of the day.

I remember the first time I heard a radio station advertise ‘Oldies from the 80’s.’ I definitely realized I wasn’t a kid anymore then…

  • LisaMama

Just wait until your kids’ babysitter was BORN the year you graduated from college! THAT makes you feel old!

  • Jill

I’m with JoeC. I feel old when they “flashback” to the 80s and talk about stuff as if it was years ago. And then I realize I have been out of high school for 22 years. And I did just turn 40 this year. I must stop now and go drink my Ensure.

I was just flipping through the channels and on Much More Music (the Canadian MTV) they’re showing the top 50 retro videos. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is number 3. Yeah, I feel old.

  • Zod

I realized I was old when I rewatched movies from my youth (ie Parenthood, Mr. Mom) and started relating more to the parents than the kids. God help me.

i felt particularly old the other day when i saw a picture of the baby on the cover of “nevermind” all growed up: http://www.dogmaticblog.com/2007/06/27/the-nevermind-baby-grows-up/

You know what makes me feel old? All that Emo punk the kids are listening to these days. My 12 y/o sister won’t dig on any of the 80’s and 90’s punk I grew up on, but loves to listen to a music I can not for the life of me get into. Nevermind that my residence is in DC where Emo was invented. GRRRR.
Oh, today gave me another “dude you are old” moment. My Ipod randomly selected “heart and soul” by Huey Lewis & the News, and I totally cranked up the volume on my scooter stereo. DUDE, I was jamming to Huey Lewis and enjoying it! That made me feel really old and tragically unhip.

You know what makes me feel old. My age. (My real age.)

  • daisyj

You mean, aside from reading the Popwatch entry by the writer who was listening to Destiny’s Child in Middle School? Still haven’t gotten over that. But my major Dear-Lord-I’m-Old moment came a few years ago (see? even my stories about feeling old are old), when I was watching some MTV awards show and this hip, buzzed-about band came on. (I think maybe it was The Vines. Or The Hives. It was definitely a “The” band.) And, as I was listening to them, I caught myself thinking “This isn’t music! This is just noise.” And then I died a little bit, because I knew I was old.
I believe you can qualify for social security benefits by merely thinking that statement.

    80’s nostalgia.
The fact that I remember not only when Paula Abdul was a “singer” but also when she was just Janet Jackson’s choreographer.
The fact that The Smurfs are classic cartoons.
When my husband and I discuss buying my daughter treats from the ice cream man and say things to each other like “Man I remember when the most expensive thing you could get from the ice cream man cost like $1.”

  • Lesley

You know you’re old when you read about a 26-year-old feeling old and you think to yourself, “But they’re just a baby!” Yeah, feeling old.

  • Jen S

I’m 26 and the husband is 23. We watch Matlock and Murder, She Wrote on the Hallmark channel all the time. Plus, have you seen the movie with Katherine Heigl? How unhip can it be when she is involved? That is what I tell myself anyway. Oh well, we’ll keep watching to help keep the average age down. You can do the same for us!

  • Sarah

You feel ancient when you realize you only like a handful of songs that are under 20 years old; you just got invited to your 20th high school reunion; your kids can’t imagine what a hellish childhood you had without Cartoon Network, GameBoys, cable tv and the internet; you still catch yourself using phrases like “Don’t have a cow!” and “Bitchen!”; you wish the thin-tie-with-rolled-up-blazer-sleeves look would come back; you can remember when MTV used to show MUSIC VIDEOS. There. How’s THAT for feeling OLD!

  • Sarah

Ep Sato: Dude, you can’t feel unhip for listening to Huey Lewis because (say it with me) IT’S HIP TO BE SQUARE! Ba dum bum CHHHHHHHH!

  • peggym

I felt old when all my responses to the earlier”scary things for Friday the 13th” story were all from Hitchcock movies.

I have summer interns in my office who were born in 1987. I’m only 32 and they call me “ma’am” (we’re in the South). In a couple of summers, we’ll get ones BORN IN THE 90S. You can only imagine how many times we have to explain what was considered cool “back when I was your age.”

  • wintersux

Was watching the new karaoke show on Fox the other night and the contestant was offered the choice of 2 songs from 1977 to sing and she said “I wasn’t even born then”. Of course I knew both of the songs well. Not the most drastic example, but the most recent.

I can’t stand most of the shlock on Pop and Hip Hop radio stations. It’s sounds louder and more annoying than it was when I was a teenager or in my early 20s. AND since somebody stole all of my CDs (B@st@rd!), my radio dial is constantly tuned to NPR. I was in the car with a friend and I got excited because “Wait, wait…don’t tell me” (the radio quiz show) was coming on. I think I said “Yay!”. As a result, she looked at me like I was a weirdo. I’m not a weirdo, I’m just getting old. I can’t stand alot of the noise that the whippersnappers listen to.

I depressed the hell out of my mom when I told her of my “Bad Back” woes.
“It was yesterday when you were running in Track and Field. Now your back is out. What next you’re drinking ensure, voting republican, and moving to florida?”
