Just a quick late-Friday box office update, friends, sincemy lovely colleague Nicole Sperling already posted this week’s box officepreview a few days ago (thanks, Nicole!) — and because, wowee, it sure lookslike we’ve got a bona fide blockbuster on our hands here! Yep, Transformers hasn’tslowed down one bit since opening with the biggest Tuesday gross in history ($27.9million): It earned $29.1 mil on Wednesday and $19.2 mil on Thursday, and ifyou add all those numbers to the $8.8 mil it earned in "previews" on Monday, the Michael Bay flick is heading into the weekend with $84.9 mil already in thebank. At this rate, the movie should be close to $150 mil by Sunday. Whoa! (Oh, and the other Tuesday opener, License to Wed, has brought in $7.4 mil so far — whatev.)
Anyway: This is huge! I mean, we sorta saw this coming, but did we really see itcoming? Are you surprised? If you’ve already seen the movie, do you think itdeserves all this financial success? If you’re one of the three people whohasn’t seen it yet, are you rarin’ to buy a ticket? Or, dare I say it, a toy?Speak up, PopWatchobots!

License to Wed isn’t doing well! shocker!
I think everyone, including parents who used to buy my generation the toys as kids, knew TRANSFORMERS was going to SUPER HUGE. And personally I think TRANSFORMERS will be closer to 200 Million come Sunday. A shame LICENSE TO WED hasn’t found any audience yet. I hope word of mouth gets out that the movie ACTUALLY is funny, and with no other comedies out right now, except the month old KNOCKED UP (though still going strong, I really hope Robin, Mandy & John get good (word of) mouth!!!
One last question for those that have seen TRANSFORMERS (as well as the SUPER, RAD, COOL, & AWESOME trailer for the new J.J. Abrams project!!) and have also seen the last Shia LeBouf film, DISTURBIA. Doesn’t his characters’ bedroom seem almost nearly the same in both films? I’m not talking frame by frame, but the lay out of the bedroom and certain shots of the house are almost identical in the two films! Did anyone else think they resembled each other??
Yeah I kind of want to see License To Wed. It doesn’t look THAT bad.
And i really didn’t expect that much of Transformers. I mean of course I thought it’d do well but I never thought it’d do THAT well. But I’m glad, it looks like a good a movie [yes I'm one of the three people who haven't seen it yet] and I think that it’ll probably continue to be a [HUGE] moneymaker.
you know, I think it’s going to be a great movie to watch on DVD, but frankly, the entire movie going experience for blockbusters is so miserable… what with the people using their cellphones, texting on their cells, bringing their kids, sticky floors, rudeness; and lack of staff to handle problems, at my Pirates screening, parents brought in a kids who ran around, a guy took off his shirt and had the hairiest back ever, and some dewds up front took of their shoes and then put their feet on the back of the seat in front of them. And the theatre was packed, so I have decided to always forego the blockbuster. For oscar bait films, people tend to be more civilized. But, damn it looks like something I should watch on the big screen; but until movie theatres learn to clean up and keep up with the experience directors are trying to give us, I give blockbusters a pass.
My husband and I took our boys (5 &11) to see Transformers tonight and we all loved it. It was actually a very funny movie and my kids were young enough for the jokes to go over their heads (just in case someone wants to slam me for taking my under 13 kids). It never seemed to drag on to me but didn’t feel too rushed either. JMO but if I was the kind of person to rewatch in the theater I would. I think it’s going to make a ton of money because I think younger kids will want to watch again on the big screen. I’m sure we’ll be buying it when it comes out on DVD
The word of mouth on License to Wed will be rightfully dreadful…sorry folks
I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by Transformers. I grew up watching the cartoon series, and I thought the movie was going to ruin my childhood.
However, the action was great, it was really funny, and Michael Bay did a good job with the robots look (except Megatron, but I’ll let that one slide since it would be hard to make him fold into a gun like he did in the show). I’m not at all surprised by the money it’s raked in. And the weekend isn’t over yet!
The Transformers has lived up to every reasonable expectation a fan can have. This was a franchise that has been in development for far too long waiting for the F/X technology to catch up with the cartoon property that existed in the 80’s. It deserves every dollar earned! I will recommend this film to anyone who enjoys summer blockbusters or has fond memories of Transformers as a child!
Transformers was pretty awesome. But it’s going to start facing some competition next week from a little indie flick called “Harry Potter”. I’m just saying, I think that one might make some money too.
This is the first movie since I can’t remember when that I applauded at the end of…along with the rest of the audience.
I also bought an Optimus Prime toy. I’ve wanted one since I was in like 4th grade, so I was overdue. He’s just so cool!
I happen to agree with Josh’s statements and I also think he is waaaaay CUTE!!!
I like reading about the Box Office prospects to keep on top of the most recent releases.
