Do we really need a 'Sex and the City' movie?

Sjp_lNow that each of the four leading ladies has signed on to the project, the long-anticipated Sex and the City flick is finally out of development limbo. And so, in true Carrie Bradshaw fashion (minus the Blahniks), we at PopWatch couldn’t help but wonder: do we really need a SATC movie?

I guess now would be a good time to mention that I own several SATC DVDs, and while I don’t watch them daily, let’s just say that they’re not exactly collecting dust. I loved the series (I even had one of those ubiquitous "I’m a Carrie" T-shirts — a purchase that, you’ll be happy to know, is collecting dust these days).

But fan status aside, I feel I may be experiencing what Carrie felt when she was torn between Mr. Big and Aidan. On one hand, you have the prospect of a really great, drama-filled movie that brings you back to your love affair with four New York women who showed us that love is tricky, but totally worth fighting for.

On the other, we have the prospect of moving on. We’ll always treasure what we had with SATC, but there comes a time when you have to let go. That doesn’t mean we let go of the lessons we’ve learned. (Just to refresh: Don’t wear brand new Louboutins to the maternity ward, post-it notes are not acceptable channels for break-up conversations, and when you fall flat on your face, you get up, strut down the runway like nothing happened, and high-five Heidi Klum.)

PopWatch editor Gary Susman says he’d prefer to move on, havinggotten the closure he needed from the 2004 series finale, given allthat was resolved after our American girl went to Paris. He worriesthat a movie version will be like that superfluous Bridget Jonessequel, times four, bringing in new complications to ruin each woman’shappily-ever-after, only to have them all tidily resolved again in 90minutes.

Me? I’m shamefully tempted to run back into Mr. Big’s arms (or at least hold his hand in the theater, while watching SATC: The Movie).I say this realizing that I’ll be opening a door that has been closedfor years and that everything could come unraveling in and hour and ahalf. But I’ll take my chances….

… of course, if Chris Noth doesn’t reprise his role as Mr. Big Iwant nothing to do with it. There’s only one Mr. Big and his name maybe John, but it’s really Chris Noth. I want my Mr. Big!

Guess "I’m a Carrie" after all.

How about you, PopWatchers? Ready to walk another mile in Carrie’sexpensive stilettos? What do you think should happen in the movie? Ordo you just wish Sarah Jessica Parker (pictured) and company wouldleave well enough alone

I think the show provided a perfectly satisfying ending and there is no need to revisit. They can’t really improve, only the potential to tarnish memories exists, so why bother?

  • NineDaves

Yes. Yes we do! Because I never had HBO, and I’d like to watch an episode of Sex and the City that everyone in the world hasn’t already seen before!

My curiosity is piqued by how well this will do in theaters. After all, the show was introduced during a different era. Our country’s gotten kind of conservative in the cultural sense over the last few years. A movie about promiscuous New York women who lead a life of expensive booze and more expensive shoes sounds like something more appropriate for the CLinton Era than now. While the show stayed on for years after Clinton (obviously), I felt that its fans were in some ways still clinging to a different era.
Can SATC captivate a paying modern audience?
If so, bet my wife will drag me in, and I’ll be rooting for Kim Catrall’s foxy character.

First few seasons were great but towards the end it was as if a “Sex and the City” machine was spitting out scripts with cheap, poorly written jokes that attempted to cling to the show’s original wit. As far as a movie? No thanks.

  • Shana

yeah it really depends on the main plot concept. I don’t really want to see stupid problems created just so they can have a movie. I don’t want tem all to gather because one of them is dying a la the Dawson’s Creek finale. I don’t want Carrie to have a baby or get married. It would be more realistic and true to the show if one or more of te relationships at the end of the show had broken up, either Big and Carrie or Samantha and Smith. So I don’t know. I’m a fan so I’m sure I’ll see it but it could really suck. Too bad they can’t do a movie of how they all met and became friends, but they’d have to use different actors, these ladies look fabulous, but they look their age…

No thank you. The more I watch this show in reruns the less I like it. The main character put herself in horrible situations with men over and over again and then whined about it. Get some self esteem girl!

  • Jill

BC– well said. I’m a huge fan of the show, but it did fall off through the end. A movie just doesn’t seem too promising to me. It actually sounds sort of depressing.

I borrowed the complete series from a friend last April and I am still on season 3. And these are cable length seasons mind you. I can not stand any of these women except Miranda, and any woman that feels empowered by casual sex and superficial tasks makes me weep for the future of feminism.

  • Fatima

And by April I meant 2006. I guess you could say I enjoy watching the show, but it is always a weird state of not liking what I’m watching, but needing to see where it goes.

Let’s get this out of the way first: I’m a fan of the show, and I would likely check out the movie out of curiosity at the very least.
That being said, I agree with Susman’s thoughts on the concept of a movie. Though I wasn’t a huge fan of the way each of these (allegedly) independent women were neatly paired off with their man in the finale, it DID wrap up the series in a tight little bow.
So creatively speaking, I don’t really see where they can go that’ll be satisfying (though I’m not saying it can’t be done). This mostly just seems as a way to get these four work. I mean, SJP and Cynthia Nixon (with her theatre work) are doing ok, but there are only so many sucky Disney family movies Kristin Davis can star in, and books about her sex life Kim Cattrall can write.

  • Jim

I’m excited for the movie, if only to see my four girls out in NY again, chatting, dishing about life and love, and getting themselves into more interesting adventures. Can’t wait!

  • Joseph

As big a fan as I am of SATC…
    1. Own the, “Carrie” poster from first season – It was my inspiration to move to NYC
    2. Own each individual seasons DVD set AS WELL AS the series ending gift set… (Just can’t get into those, “Best Of’s” though)
You would think that I’d be turning cartwheels over the SATC movie, but sadly, I’m not and I wish I was.
Thing is, I enjoyed checking in with these characters once a week, it was like hooking up with your best friends for dinner and finding out what was new in their lives.
The show had a beginning, middle and very satisfying end and for me a movie version (Unless the script is FABULOUS) stands a greater chance of ruining what was perfection.
In my opinion, if they wanted to re-visit this show, I would have preferred an, “Extended episode” on HBO every couple years instead of something so special getting the, “Big screen treatment.”

  • CalL

Can’t wait, for so many reasons, primarily: the fashion.
I miss the ecletic, NY avant fashion for thirty-somethings. No other show has it quite so interesting/daring yet real.

  • peggym

The only reason would be to show what a miserable choice Carrie made by ending up with Big– a guy who let her down for years, even marrying someone else. Going back to your emotional abuser is a happy ending?

  • ceej

In a word, no. In more words, Hell No!
That show was such BS. The group of independent women all ended up changing for the man they wanted: Miranda sacrificed her career and NYC lifestyle, Samantha became monogamous, Carrie gave up living in Paris, and Charlotte changed her religion! Now, I know women do these things every day but when you build a case for happy single-dom then couple-off all your happy singles you contradict your very premise. Looking back on the series in re-runs only highlights how full of crap those characters were.

  • DW

    nope

  • donner

When the movie idea was first bantered around a few years ago, a script was already in the works…and some of it was going to go BACK to how the girls met…so we’ll get to see them in THOSE fashion (disasters?)…Charlotte in all pink and green with bows in her hair and alligators on her shirt? I think it would be a fun movie, nothing story driven or dramatic…hopefully….I’m looking forward to it, but I don’t expect it move the Big/Carrie relationship into heavy problems…I wanna see them have fun w/ Stanford and Harry and Anthony!

  • bburlew

We don’t need a movie-we need a whole series of movies-I miss this show like no other, and while the series did wrap up somewhat satisfactorily, I’m sure there’s plenty more to tell-It’s about time!

  • mike

Who in the entertainment industry can leave well enough alone? The last season was running on fumes. The other three women had little to do, but miss Carrie. Charlotte spent the season chasing after a dog. Leave it alone.

  • dbanimate

I say yes, only because there are about zero women friendly movies these days, and at least its a recycle of a great television show.

  • eddie

Read my lips: YES!!!! We need it! Movie, another movie, a TV Series again! Sex in the City is a true inpiration to all of us hoping to find true love & relationships. It inspired me to move & be a writer here in NYC!

  • Ed

WHOO HOOO! Boo to all of you that poo-poo the idea of Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charolette getting back together! I discovered SATC after the show was finished and would loved to be a part of what it was like when it first came out. How many new fans have been created with just the DVD’s alone? With the gay community as well as chick flick material this movie has already made 100 million and it’s not even made yet!
…and excuse me but towards the end of the show, season 5 and season 6 had some of the best shows of the series. Critical Condition had the great episode with “the face girl” Nina Katz! Unoriginal Sin had Steve’s mom saying, “He’s a cute f*cking Catholic!”, Plus Oe is the Lonelist Number, “I don’t want to be seen on my cover, naked, hailing a cab!” -hello, the list goes on!
Season 6 – Splat! makes me want to smoke a cig and fly out a window!
I think I’ll start waiting in line, watch out for me in the news!

  • starchild

I’m a huge fan of SATC but I fear a movie unless it’s a prequel. Breaking them up and having a whole movie about getting over a man would be horrible. By the way, I loved the finale – getting older is about maturity – maturity is about compromise. People get older – there’s nothing pretty about being in your forties having lots of meaningless sex. Loved Samantha’s and Smith’s relationship. Loved her having sex with him in their last scene together – that’s the way Sam should have gone out. Charlotte was always about love and Miranda’s character showed great development – you have children, you change. Carrie belonged with Big – HE changed, she didn’t.

  • JodyK

Do I need a movie about SATC? No. Do I want a movie about SATC? YES DEFINITELY!!!

  • MelinCali

If we can have a 4th Indiana Jones, a 4th Die Hard, and a 1000th Rocky, I see no reason why we can’t have ONE Sex and the City!!!

  • Shawn

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES

  • Diana

OMG….can’t wait…this will be the highlight of my year. The opening night is planned in my datebook already. Dinner in NYC, the movie and drinks afterwards…..I miss the girls and their friendships so much. But Chris Noth must play BIG…if not, the movie will not be a success!!! Get a move on with the production…I can hardly frigin wait!!!!

  • To ceej

Oh please! So your idea of these characters being acceptable and not full of BS, as you put it, is that they become miserable harpies who won’t go out of their way for anyone and end up a bunch of pathetic alcoholic spinsters who never grow up and whose lives never change?? Get a grip and a clue. Real life isn’t like that, so neither should the gals be. And BOO to you for saying that the characters are ‘full of crap’ for not wanting to live their lives alone. That’s the most ignorant thing I’ve ever heard.

  • RyRy

i think its pretty obviously a yes! all you d*mb*sses saying no, shut the F*ck up! ur not real fans if you dont miss your four best girlfriends… sit yur ass at home while us true fans reunite with our four favorite manhattanites… btw, just b/c Samantha was screwing jarrod doesnt make her monogamous… it makes her horny

  • Sarah

I love SATC…the outfits, New York, Sarah Jessica Parker. I don’t think the movie is necessary but I welcome it entirely, especially if everyone works hard to make it good. If it ends up being something thrown together for a quick buck (like Shrek 3 or some crap) then that would be a little heart breaking.
