Some welcome developments on Wisteria Lane: First, says the Hollywood Reporter, Desperate Housewives might get some new blood, in the form of a family prospectively to be played by Dana Delany (reportedly, series creator Marc Cherry’s original choice to play Bree), Nathan Fillion (pictured; apparently, Waitress has done for his career what Firefly/Serenity could not), and 20-year-old Lyndsy Fonseca (who’s also set to play a recurring role on Heroes; maybe her superpower is an ability to be on two shows at once). Delany’s always a welcome presence in TV land, and since Kidnapped was cruelly short-lived, a DH role would be a nice mini-comeback.
Second is the notion floated in Liz Smith’s Variety column that Cherry is mulling a musical episode. I actually think DH would be well-suited to a musical episode, provided the golden throats of our housewives and their fellas are up to it. Smith notes that Teri Hatcher and Nicollette Sheridan have some documented singing experience, and that the others are, at least, pros who’ll do whatever they need to…
Hold the phone, does this mean Edie’s not dead?
How do these developments sound to you, PopWatchers? Eager to see a suburban kickline? And what other shows might benefit from Buffy/Scrubs-style musical episodes?

Ugh. I don’t understand why shows keep doing this. It’s not creative or clever anymore. The Scrubs musical episode was a huge disappointment. Despite songs by the Avenue Q guys it wasn’t funny or touching at all- which I do think the average episode is. A Desperate Housewives musical episode seems destined to turn out like a bad crossover with Bye Bye Birdie. Hate, hate, hate.
Desperate Housewives musical episode? Sure, why not! I’ve accepted plenty of other things that show has thrown me by this point. But is there really a need? Believe me – I love my musicals. But I just don’t think they work that well in TV-land. Maybe DH will prove me wrong. Hopefully they’ll get March Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray) to write it. They have the style and sense of humor that might benefit Wysteria Lane.
I think Ugly Betty should have a musical episode! It’s silly/fun enough to pull it off.
They need a sensible gay character in DH. It’s getting boring.
I don’t watch the show (and not even Nathan’s enough to make me start, much as I adore him) but seriously, the musical thing has to stop. No one is ever going to make another “Once More, With Feeling.” It set the bar and, really, no one will ever reach it again.
The cool thing about the Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical episode “Once More With Feeling” was that it fell within the show’s context. Everybody was singing and dancing because they were under a magical spell that was going to cause them to dance until they die.
Maybe the other shows’ musical episodes are dream sequences. That could work. Otherwise, why are people singing?
FYI, the Buffy Musical on the Big Screen is going around the USA.

Here are the ones in July 2007
July 6 & 7 – Detroit
July 13 & 14 – New York City
July 20 & 21 – Washington DC
July 27 & 28 – Tulsa
and Whoo-hoo for Nathan Fillion!
Gary this is exactly why we need a Sex and the City movie because cheap imitations like this show only beg for the original!
I’ve been with DH since it was known as the show which would carry the torch of Sex and the City, since then, Terri Hatcher took that torch and lost it!
Dana will be a good addition to the show, never liked the fact that she died on a jet-ski in her All My Children days.
I agree with “whatswrong”…”Ugly Betty” would be perfect for a musical episode. They could center it around Justin.
Heard that Nathan’s character may be a OBGYN which would definitely come from Waitress
By the way, Fox Searchlight is still sending Waitress to new theaters every Friday! It was an hour away last weekend. Now it is only a half an hour away. Worth the drive. Beautiful movie.

I know it will probably never happen, but an Office musical episode would be amazingly hilarious.
But I think an Ugly Betty one would be a great one, and one that probably could be done, since some of the cast has a music/musical theater/theater background.
Not to sure about a DH musical(as much as the thought amuses me), but I’m all for the addition of Nathan! I gave up on the show in it’s second season but I could be convinced to return for many shirtless scenes involving Mr. Fillion!
Oh God, please, NO! NOT A MUSICAL EPISODE! It was bad enough on Scrubs, practically ruined the show, and they think this is a good idea for DH?!?! Someone please tell Cherry to stop smoking whatever junk he’s toking and come to his senses!
Nathan showing up on Wisteria Lane might just be enough to get me watching again.
…I don’t know, I liked Scrubs’ “My Musical”. With that show’s absurdist tone and already present musical interludes (Turk’s always dancing, Ted’s acapella “band”) I always thought the show was suited for a musical just fine.
I thought “Guy Love” and “Everything comes down to poop” were funny.
I love love love love Nathan Fillion. I really liked the Scrubs musical episode, too, and I don’t quite understand all the hate for it by other posters. And I agree with the guy who said an Office musical would be a good idea. Actually, think pretty much any of the NBC Thursday Night comedies could pull off a musical episode.
Ceballos, you do have a point. The scrubs episode was much better suited for a musical show, and the songs were pretty funny. I just don’t see how they’d be able to pull off a musical DH and make it work on any level. DH is funny, but it’s also very twisted and dark. I mean, are they gonna have Edie warbling from her noose? Nobody wants to see that!
As a huge Buffy fan AND homosexual, maybe I just LACK that gay gene, but I hate musicals, and the “Once More, With Feeling” episode was grating for me. I just couldn’t get into it. And yes, I saw Chicago in the theater and fell asleep, and have yet to watch DreamGirls. So with that being said, yeah, a musical episode of Desperate Housewives just seems like a BAD idea to me. HOWEVER, for some odd reason, I totally agree with whoever first thought of it, and think UGLY BETTY would make for an excellent musical episode! Its on ABC, hell, they could even make it a cross over episode & have members of Disney’s High School Musical guest star!! THAT could actually be entertaining!
ok, no one has mentrioned anything about dana delany. i love her and i hope she does end up on the show. and how about a gay family moving in? the “two husbands” might make for some great stories. forget the musical episode, bring the gay (ok, DH is already gay, bring more)
Jenny, did you watch the same Scrubs musical that I did? ‘Cause the one that I saw was BRILLIANT. Sure, there were some haters who said it wasn’t as good as the Buffy musical (that may be, I wasn’t watching Buffy at the time), but it was a great 1/2 hour of TV, nonetheless.
Phil, we don’t have a lot in common; I’m straight and I do like musicals, but I do agree with you on one thing: a musical episode of DH is a BAD IDEA. The show’s “personality” just doesn’t lend itself to a musical. As a loyal Browncoat, I am glad to see Nathan Fillion employed again. Although given that he is cursed not to have a show last more than 10 episodes once he’s on it (Firefly, Drive, Buffy [OK, I know that was already finishing the run, but still]), that doesn’t bode well for Wisteria Lane. Heck, I’m still wondering how Lost survived his cameo.
NOOOOOOO… now I have to watch that tripe just to see my baby daddy Nathan! I’m all for the man working, but, PLEASE, say it ain’t so!
i never thought i’d watch DH again, but only nathan can bring me back. i will watch him on anything. i haven’t seen waitress yet, but i watched drive. and i watch firefly like it’s going out of style. i love nathan.
They need to get Charisma Carpenter on this show ASAP. She has the comic timing this show excels at and who doesn’t think she would own as a sexy soccer Mom who throws down with Gaby?
Thank goodness. Finally a series for Nathan that is not in any danger of cancellation. The man needs to get some screen time that will allow the world to see his talent. Although I am not a DH fan, this news is nowhere near as devastating to me as realization I came to as a child that Patrick Duffy being on Dallas meant that the Man From Atlantis would never be on TV again. I guess Firefly will never be relaunched
I just hope Eva Longoria can sing better than her no singing talent husband Tony Parker.
Great news about the new family tho. A hottie from “exit to eden” and captain tightpants in one house? Steamy to the max!
Guys, don’t mix up your Dana’s. This is Dana Delany of the probably-never-to-be-released-on-dvd-China Beach. Also of Pasadena and Kidnapped. Wonderful actress.
Nathan Fillion?!?! Seriously? I am so psyched for next season now!
I love Nathan Fillion and despise Desperate Housewives. It really makes me sad to think that this horrible show will be tying up his time and possibly preventing the next Slither or Waitress from being made. I’m not a DH viewer, but isn’t this show past it’s prime? I’m happy for Nathan, sad for his fans. Hopefully he’ll do a lot of movies over the summers.
NO, NICOLE, THIS SHOW IS NOT PAST ITS PRIME, if you would take the time to watch it once in a while. And seeing that you don’t, what the hell are you doing on this message board in the first place?
Oh god what a waste of Nathan… Desparate Housewives is horrible…my heart is breaking…
Nathan Fillion. I might have to watch the show now. I hope it doesn’t waste him.
