To “To Jason”. I think I’ve gotten mixed up in the abortion political argument, the right or left, when my initial comment dismissed this argument and rather commented on the lack of female perspective. I had hoped for more from these filmakers in this regard. We have too many films made from the male perspective. This is nothing new. What is worrisome is when a movie pretends, like Knocked Up, to have a female perspective. I will admit to enjoying the movie, but can’t help but feel a little dissapointed in its message.
Beyond the typically pointless pro/anti-abortion debate lies a bigger issue of reality. To make a film starring two young adults dealing with the issue of pregnancy and not even address the issue of abortion between them is denigrating the audience’s intelligence. It’s like making a film about the World Trade Center and neglecting to even mention 9/11.
BIG elephant in the room!
I’m also dismayed that they didn’t even have the courage to say “abortion.” SMA-SMORTION??? 10 years ago “Seinfeld” had Elaine dump a guy because he was anti-abortion, and the characters used the word like they were discussing clothes… and now an R-rated “raunchy” comedy is afraid to even mention it by name.
Welcome to George W. Bush’s America.
Is it that hard to believe that a woman wouldn’t want to have a baby? Lots of the women I know, including those who are pro-choice, would make the same decision. Similarly, there are lots of couples who don’t seem to fit together on the surface. One might be much more (conventionally) attractive than the other, or taller, or whatever. As this movie showed and experience proves, people don’t fall in love or stay in love because of those things.
PS: I LOVED Kristen Wiig! She’s so great!
I plan to see Knocked Up, haven’t yet but wanted to comment.
If Knocked Up doesn’t at least mention abortion, something will seem a bit off. I don’t think it would distract from the movie as a whole, but it would seem off to me.
I have seen Waitress, another comedy about a pregnancy, this one unplanned and in many ways unwanted. They still make a passing reference to the fact that she’s not going to get an abortion. No big deal was made, just one line that at least put it out there and then said move on. I should hope there would be something similar in Knocked Up.
